Chapter 13: The Brother Who Knew the Truth

The man standing outside the room looked like Terrence.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The same dark eyes.

The same shape of his face.

The same quiet expression he used when he was trying to hide something.

But there was one difference.

Terrence always looked like he was afraid of losing something.

This man looked like he had already lost everything.

Detective Miller stepped aside.

“Keisha, this is Adrian Walker.””

The name meant nothing.

But the last name did.

Walker.

My husband’s last name.

My eyes moved between them.

“Brother?””

Adrian nodded.

“Half-brother.””

The room became silent.

Terrence’s voice from behind me made me turn.

“What are you doing here?””

Adrian looked at him.

And the pain in his eyes was immediate.

“You knew I would come eventually.””

Terrence looked away.

That reaction told me more than words could.

I looked at Terrence.

“You knew about him.””

He didn’t answer.

My chest tightened.

“Terrence.””

He slowly looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty almost shocked me.

After everything.

After all the lies.

The truth finally came out easily.

“You knew.””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

I felt something inside me break again.

“How long?””

“Since before we met.””

I stared at him.

“You let me believe I knew everything about you.””

“I was ashamed.””

“Shame is hiding your past.””

My voice trembled.

“This is hiding a person.””

Adrian stepped inside.

“I didn’t come here to hurt you.””

I looked at him.

“Then why are you here?””

He glanced at Terrence.

“Because he almost destroyed your life.””

Terrence’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

Adrian ignored him.

“Tell her the truth.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Terrence.

“What truth?””

He didn’t answer.

Adrian did.

“Terrence’s kidney disease wasn’t a random illness.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian took a breath.

“Our father had a condition.””

I frowned.

“What condition?””

“A genetic disease.””

The words felt heavy.

“Terrence knew?””

Adrian nodded.

“He knew for years.””

I looked at my husband.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Terrence looked devastated.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

Again.

That word.

“I was scared.””

I shook my head.

“You knew this could happen?””

“Yes.””

“You knew you could get sick?””

“Yes.””

“And you still built a life with me without telling me?””

His eyes filled.

“I thought I had more time.””

The answer was quiet.

But it didn’t save him.

Because there are truths that arrive too late.

Adrian continued.

“The disease was progressing faster than expected.””

I looked at him.

“So Terrence needed a transplant.””

“Yes.””

“And you were a possible donor?””

Adrian nodded.

“I was tested.””

My breath caught.

“You could have donated?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Adrian looked at Terrence.

“Because he refused.””

The room froze.

I turned slowly.

“What?””

Terrence looked down.

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“He didn’t want anyone knowing.””

“Knowing what?””

“That the disease was inherited.””

I stared.

“Why would that matter?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because Terrence had been hiding his medical history from investors.””

Everything clicked.

The debt.

The business.

The paperwork.

The secrets.

“You lied to everyone.””

Terrence whispered:

“I was trying to fix it.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“You were trying to escape it.””

I looked at Terrence.

“Is that why you rushed the transplant?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My hands tightened.

“You didn’t just need a kidney.””

Terrence looked at me.

“I did need one.””

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

“But you also needed a story.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“You needed to look like the victim.””

I swallowed.

“You needed people to see the sick husband who was saved by his loving wife.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

That was exactly what happened.

Adrian stepped forward.

“He used your sacrifice as proof that he was trustworthy.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“His investors saw him differently after the transplant.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because your story made him look like someone people could believe in.””

The pain was almost too much.

My kidney.

My body.

My suffering.

My love.

All turned into a shield.

A public image.

A way for him to survive.

I looked at Terrence.

“Did you ever love me?””

His eyes filled immediately.

“Yes.””

The answer came fast.

But this time, I didn’t believe it.

“Maybe you did.””

I whispered.

“But you loved what I gave you more.””

Terrence looked away.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Adrian reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small recording device.

“I brought this because I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

Terrence’s face changed.

“No.””

Adrian pressed a button.

A voice filled the room.

Terrence’s voice.

My husband’s voice.

But from months earlier.

Before surgery.

“I just need the transplant to happen.””

My blood ran cold.

Another voice responded.

Marcus.

“You understand the risk?””

Terrence answered:

“I understand.””

Marcus asked:

“And after?””

A pause.

Then Terrence said:

“After she saves me, everything changes.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody breathed.

I looked at Terrence.

He looked like he wanted to disappear.

“What did you mean?””

He whispered:

“Keisha…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“What did you mean?””

He had no answer.

Adrian looked at me.

“That’s not the worst part.””

My heart sank.

“What could possibly be worse?””

Adrian took a breath.

“The recording was made before the surgery.””

I waited.

“Three days before.””

I stared.

“Then why didn’t you show anyone?””

His expression changed.

“Because I wasn’t the one who found it.””

I frowned.

“Who did?””

Adrian looked toward the doorway.

And my stomach dropped.

Because standing there…

was someone I never expected to see.

Someone who had disappeared after the surgery.

May you like

Someone who knew everything.

Monica.
