Chapter 6: My Sister’s Impossible Confession
I couldn’t move.
My sister stood in the doorway, and suddenly every emotion I had been holding back rushed forward at once.
Anger.
Confusion.
Relief.
Betrayal.
All fighting for space inside me.
“Danielle.””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
She wiped her face.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say that.””
She stopped.
Because she knew.
She knew I was right.
“You were there.””
Her eyes closed.
“Yes.””
“The night before my surgery.””
“Yes.””
“With him.””
Her silence confirmed it.
I looked at Terrence.
Then back at my sister.
“Why?””
Danielle walked inside slowly.
“I came because I knew something was wrong.””
My laugh was bitter.
“You knew something was wrong?””
She nodded.
“Terrence called me.””
My heart dropped.
“He called you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Because he wanted me to convince you.””
The room became still.
“Convince me of what?””
Danielle looked at me.
“To sign the final documents.””
I stared.
“What documents?””
She swallowed.
“The ones that changed after the first review.””
My fingers tightened around the wheelchair.
“You knew.””
“I knew he was scared.””
“You knew he was hiding things.””
Danielle started crying.
“I knew he wasn’t telling you everything.””
The pain of those words was almost worse than the betrayal.
My own sister knew.
Everybody knew.
Except me.
“I trusted you.””
Danielle covered her mouth.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“I was lying on a hospital bed preparing to give away part of myself, and you were standing beside him knowing he wasn’t being honest.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I looked at her.
“By letting me walk into surgery blind?””
Danielle had no answer.
Terrence finally spoke.
“Keisha, please.””
I turned toward him.
“You’ve said that so many times.””
He looked broken.
“I made mistakes.””
I stared.
“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment.””
My voice trembled.
“Mistakes are saying something stupid during an argument.””
I pointed at him.
“You built a second life while I was saving yours.””
Terrence looked down.
Danielle stepped closer.
“There’s something else.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was.
There was always something else.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I found out after the surgery.””
“Found out what?””
She glanced at Terrence.
“He wasn’t just planning to leave.””
The room went cold.
Terrence immediately shook his head.
“Danielle.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“She deserves to know.””
My heartbeat grew louder.
“What was he planning?””
Danielle hesitated.
Then she said:
“He was planning to tell everyone that your marriage was already over.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He wanted people to believe you donated because you felt guilty.””
The words didn’t make sense.
I looked at Terrence.
“What did you say?””
He looked horrified.
“I never said that.””
Danielle continued.
“He told his family that you were refusing to accept the relationship was ending.””
I felt something inside me crack.
Because Terrence’s family had visited me.
They brought flowers.
They hugged me.
They called me strong.
And all that time…
They believed I was the problem.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, Terrence noticed.
His expression changed.
“What is that?””
I looked at the screen.
Another message.
But this one wasn’t from the unknown number.
It was from Terrence’s mother.
*Keisha, we need to talk before you hear the truth from someone else.*
I looked up.
Terrence went pale.
“What did my mother send you?””
I stared at him.
“She said I need to hear the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Then Danielle whispered:
“She knows.””
I looked at her.
“Knows what?””
Danielle’s face changed.
The sadness disappeared.
Fear replaced it.
“She knows who really changed the transplant paperwork.””
My hand slowly lowered.
“Who?””
Danielle looked at Terrence.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“It wasn’t Terrence.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Danielle took a shaky breath.
“The person who changed the documents was someone much closer to you.””
My heart sank.
“Who?””
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the hospital room door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Terrence’s mother.
And in her hand…
May you like
was the original transplant file.
The one that disappeared before my surgery.
