Chapter 1: The Smile at Breakfast

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of them.””

Vanessa smiled as she said it.

Michael believed her.

That was the part that would hurt him most later.

Sunlight poured through the wide kitchen windows of their Georgia home, turning the polished dining table honey-gold. The smell of buttered toast, scrambled eggs, and coffee filled the room. Arthur sat at the head of the table with his cane resting against his chair. Evelyn sat beside him, her silver curls neatly arranged, her lavender cardigan buttoned all the way to the top.

They looked tired.

But they were smiling.

Michael leaned down and kissed Vanessa on the cheek.

“You sure you’re okay with this?”” he asked.

Vanessa gave him a little laugh.

“Michael, you’ve asked me three times.””

“I know.””

“And the answer is still yes.””

She reached for his breakfast plate and slid it closer to him.

“You have work. Your parents need someone here today. I can handle breakfast, lunch, whatever they need.””

Arthur lifted his coffee mug.

“You don’t have to wait on us, sweetheart.””

Vanessa turned toward him with an expression so warm it almost looked effortless.

“I know, Arthur. I want to.””

Evelyn smiled.

“That’s kind of you.””

Michael looked at his parents, then at Vanessa.

For the first time that morning, his shoulders relaxed.

His father had recently started using the cane after his leg became unsteady. His mother was doing better, but she tired easily. Michael hated leaving them alone for long stretches, and lately work had been demanding more of his time.

Vanessa knew that.

She had promised she would help.

Michael picked up his keys from the counter.

“I should be back around six.””

Vanessa followed him toward the front door.

“Don’t rush.””

“I probably will anyway.””

She laughed.

Arthur called from the dining room.

“Michael!””

Michael turned.

His father pointed toward the bread basket.

“You forgot your toast.””

Michael grinned.

“Dad, I’m already late.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Take care of yourself.””

“I will, Mom.””

He walked back to Vanessa, kissed her forehead, and lowered his voice.

“Thank you.””

She looked directly into his eyes.

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of them.””

Michael smiled.

Then he stepped outside.

The front door closed.

The sound of the lock clicking into place was small.

Almost nothing.

But Vanessa’s expression changed immediately.

The warmth vanished.

Her smile dropped.

She stood completely still for two seconds.

Then she turned around.

Arthur was still holding his coffee.

Evelyn was reaching for another piece of toast.

Vanessa walked back into the dining room.

“Okay,” she said.

Her voice was flat now.

Arthur looked up.

“Everything all right?””

Vanessa picked up Evelyn’s plate.

“Yes.””

She carried it toward the kitchen.

Evelyn blinked.

“I’m still eating.””

Vanessa didn't answer.

She picked up Arthur’s plate too.

Arthur frowned.

“Vanessa?””

She kept walking.

“Wait,” Evelyn said softly.

“Could I have my plate back?””

Vanessa stopped.

For a moment, the room was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator.

Then Vanessa slowly turned.

“You heard what Michael said.””

Evelyn looked confused.

“What did Michael say?””

“That I have work to do too.””

Arthur lowered his coffee.

“We thought we were having breakfast.””

“You were.””

Vanessa carried both plates to the kitchen.

Arthur exchanged a glance with Evelyn.

“Did something happen?”” he asked.

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa placed the plates on the counter.

Then she looked back at them.

“You two are going to have to start doing things for yourselves.””

Arthur's eyebrows pulled together.

“I can.””

“Good.””

“I wasn't asking you to serve me.””

“I know.””

Vanessa wiped her hands with a kitchen towel.

“Then we're clear.””

Evelyn slowly pushed herself away from the table.

“I can clean up.””

Vanessa gave her a hard look.

“No. You can clean the whole kitchen.””

Evelyn froze.

Arthur's hand tightened around his cane.

“The whole kitchen?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Since you’re both staying here, you might as well contribute.””

Evelyn looked toward the empty doorway.

“Michael said—”

Vanessa cut her off.

“Michael says a lot of things.””

The words landed heavily.

Arthur stared at her.

“That’s my son you’re talking about.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“And that is my husband.””

Nobody spoke.

Outside, Michael's truck was already gone.

May you like

He had no idea what was happening inside his own house.

And Vanessa was just getting started.
