Chapter 7: What Arthur Hid
Michael stared at his father.
“What did you hide?””
Arthur didn't answer.
The phone was still in Michael's hand.
The photograph remained on the screen.
His parents at the kitchen table.
Taken from outside.
Taken that morning.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone was still watching them.
Michael lowered the phone.
“Dad.””
Arthur looked toward the window.
“I never wanted you involved.””
“You don't get to decide that anymore.””
Evelyn reached for Arthur's hand.
“Tell him.””
Arthur's fingers trembled.
“Your father and I kept something from you because we thought it would protect you.””
Michael shook his head.
“That's exactly what Vanessa said.””
Vanessa stood near the office door, silent.
Arthur looked at her.
Then back at his son.
“This has nothing to do with Vanessa.””
Michael's eyes narrowed.
“Then why did she have all those documents?””
“Because someone gave them to her.””
Vanessa suddenly looked up.
Arthur continued.
“She wasn't working alone.””
Michael turned toward his wife.
“You knew about this?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not all of it.””
“What does that mean?””
“I knew Derek wanted something. I didn't know what.””
Michael's voice hardened.
“You borrowed seventy-five thousand dollars from him.””
“Yes.””
“And you gave him my parents' information?””
“No.””
Arthur interrupted.
“He got it another way.””
Michael looked at him.
“How?””
Arthur leaned heavily against the table.
“Five years ago, I was approached by a man named Calvin Reed.””
Michael frowned.
“Who?””
“You don't know him.””
“Why did he approach you?””
Arthur looked at Evelyn.
She nodded.
Arthur took a breath.
“Because of a company I used to work for.””
Michael sat down.
“What company?””
“Redwood Logistics.””
Michael searched his father's face.
“You told me you retired from there.””
“I did.””
“What happened?””
Arthur's voice became quiet.
“I found out the company was hiding money.””
Michael stared.
“What kind of money?””
“Millions.””
The room went silent.
Arthur continued.
“I was an operations manager. I noticed shipments that didn't match the records. Containers would leave warehouses with one set of paperwork and arrive with another.””
Michael leaned forward.
“You reported it?””
“Yes.””
“To who?””
“The owner.””
“And?””
Arthur laughed bitterly.
“He told me to forget what I had seen.””
Michael looked at Evelyn.
“What happened after that?””
“They fired him,” Evelyn said.
Arthur nodded.
“But before they did, I copied some files.””
Michael's eyes widened.
“What files?””
“Records proving the fraud.””
“Where are they?””
Arthur looked toward the hallway.
“Hidden.””
Michael followed his gaze.
“Here?””
Arthur nodded.
“Where?””
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, “In this house.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That's what Derek wants.””
Michael turned.
“How do you know?””
“Because he asked me about them.””
Arthur's eyes closed.
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“When?””
“Months ago.””
“You knew someone was looking for my father's files?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was scared.””
“You were scared?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“He knew about my debt. He knew about the house. He knew about your parents. He said if I helped him find what Arthur had, he'd clear what I owed.””
Michael stared at her.
“So you started searching.””
“Yes.””
“You forged my signature.””
“Yes.””
“You tried to use the house as collateral.””
“I thought if I paid Derek, he'd leave us alone.””
Arthur shook his head.
“He was never going to leave you alone.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because Calvin Reed isn't working alone.””
Michael stood.
“Who is?””
Arthur looked toward the windows again.
“The people who owned Redwood.””
Michael felt a chill.
“You're telling me some company executives are threatening us over documents from five years ago?””
“Not executives.””
Arthur's voice dropped.
“The man who ran everything.””
“Who?””
Arthur looked directly at his son.
“Calvin Reed.””
Michael went still.
“The same man you just mentioned?””
“Yes.””
“But you said you were approached by him.””
“I was.””
“You said he worked for Redwood.””
“He owned it.””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“Derek works for him?””
“Yes.””
“And the man who called me tonight?””
Arthur nodded.
“Calvin.””
Michael looked down at the photograph again.
“Then why is he saying you stole something?””
Arthur sighed.
“Because I didn't just copy the files.””
Michael's expression tightened.
“What else?””
Arthur walked toward the cabinet.
He opened the bottom drawer.
Inside was an old metal box.
He lifted it onto the desk.
Michael watched him unlock it.
Inside were photographs.
USB drives.
A thick envelope.
And an old key.
Arthur picked up the envelope.
“This is what he wants.””
Michael reached for it.
Arthur pulled it back.
“Before you open it, you need to understand something.””
Michael stared.
“What?””
“If Calvin gets this, people could die.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
Michael looked at the envelope.
“What is on it?””
“Names.””
“Whose names?””
“People who were paid.””
“For what?””
Arthur's voice trembled.
“To make problems disappear.””
Evelyn whispered, “Arthur.””
He looked at her.
“We can't hide anymore.””
Michael took the envelope.
He opened it.
Several pages slid out.
Bank transfers.
Company ledgers.
Photographs.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Michael's eyes moved quickly.
Then he stopped.
One name appeared repeatedly.
*Derek Coleman.*
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“You said Derek was just a lender.””
“He was.””
Arthur shook his head.
“No.””
Michael turned.
Arthur pointed at the documents.
“Derek was one of Calvin's collectors.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Michael looked at her.
“You knew his name.””
“I didn't know.””
“You borrowed money from him.””
“I thought he was a private investor.””
Arthur pulled another photograph from the box.
It showed Calvin Reed standing beside three men.
One of them was Derek.
The other two were strangers.
Arthur turned over the photograph.
There was a date written on the back.
Three months earlier.
Michael's stomach dropped.
“That was after you retired.””
Arthur nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why were you still being watched?””
“Because I still had the files.””
Michael looked at the paperwork.
Then his eyes caught something.
A signature.
His own.
He froze.
“Dad.””
Arthur looked up.
“This name.””
Michael pointed.
“My signature is here.””
Arthur's face changed.
“No.””
Michael held up the page.
“This transaction happened last year.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Michael read the line.
“Account transfer.””
His eyes moved lower.
“The receiving account is in my name.””
Arthur stared.
“That can't be.””
Michael's hands began to shake.
Someone had used his identity.
Someone had moved money through an account connected to him.
And suddenly, the forged house document made sense.
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“Derek wasn't trying to get the house.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“He was trying to make it look like I was part of the fraud.””
Arthur's eyes widened.
“Yes.””
Michael looked at the documents.
“Why?””
Arthur answered quietly.
“So when they expose the stolen money, the evidence points to you.””
A heavy silence followed.
Then Michael's phone buzzed again.
Another message.
*You finally understand.*
A second message appeared.
*Now ask your father why he waited five years to tell you.*
Michael slowly raised his eyes.
Arthur was already crying.
“Dad?””
Arthur whispered, “Because the night I found the files…”
He stopped.
Michael waited.
Arthur looked at Evelyn.
“She was with me.””
Evelyn nodded.
“And we weren't alone.””
Michael's voice dropped.
“Who was with you?””
Arthur's lips trembled.
“Your brother.””
Michael stared.
“I don't have a brother.””
May you like
Arthur looked at him.
“You did.””
