Chapter 4: The Signature
Michael held the paper between two fingers as though it might burn him.
The kitchen suddenly felt too bright.
Sunlight still spilled across the countertops. The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere outside, a lawn mower droned in the distance.
Everything looked ordinary.
Nothing was ordinary anymore.
Vanessa stood near the hallway, her arms hanging at her sides.
Michael looked down at the document again.
At the top, in bold letters, were the words:
*AUTHORIZED RESIDENCE AND CARE AGREEMENT*
His eyes moved lower.
His parents’ names were there.
So was his.
And beneath them was a signature that looked almost exactly like his own.
Almost.
Michael slowly looked up.
“Why is my signature on this?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I told you. I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
“I was trying to protect everyone.””
Arthur pushed himself upright.
“Protect us from what?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Michael held the document out.
“You want to explain? Start here.””
Vanessa glanced at the paper.
Then at Evelyn.
Then back at Michael.
“I found it online.””
Michael frowned.
“You found what online?””
“A template.””
“For what?””
“A caregiving agreement.””
“You filled it out.””
“Yes.””
“You signed my name.””
“I didn't think it was a big deal.””
Michael stared at her.
“You didn't think signing my name was a big deal?””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“When everything was settled.””
Arthur gave a bitter laugh.
“Settled?””
Michael turned toward his father.
“What does she mean?””
Arthur shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Evelyn looked frightened.
Michael crouched beside her.
“Mom, did Vanessa ask you to sign anything?””
“No.””
“Did she show you this?””
“No.””
“Did she tell you what it was?””
Evelyn shook her head.
Michael stood.
“Then why are their names on it?””
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“Because your parents agreed to it.””
Arthur slammed the bottom of his cane against the floor.
“No, I did not.””
Vanessa flinched.
“You verbally agreed.””
“To what?””
“To the arrangement.””
“What arrangement?””
Vanessa pointed at the document.
“That you would contribute toward household expenses and acknowledge that you were guests in our home.””
Arthur stared at her.
“Guests?””
Michael looked at the document again.
He read the paragraph beneath the signatures.
His face hardened.
“You wrote that they can be removed from the house with thirty days' notice.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“You wrote that they waive any claim to the property.””
“Michael—”
“And you wrote that I can terminate their residency.””
“I was trying to make things clear.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I was going to have you sign the real copy.””
“The real copy?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
Michael's voice dropped.
“How many copies are there?””
She didn't answer.
“How many?””
“Three.””
Arthur whispered, “Lord.””
Michael walked toward the kitchen island and placed the paper down.
“Where are the other two?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Vanessa.””
“In my office.””
“Get them.””
She hesitated.
“Now.””
She walked toward the hallway.
Michael followed.
“Wait.””
Vanessa stopped.
He pointed toward the dining room.
“You don't leave this room until I know exactly what you've been doing.””
“I haven't done anything.””
Michael laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“My mother just told me you mistreat them every time I leave.””
“That isn't true.””
“Then look at her and say it.””
Vanessa turned.
Evelyn looked at the floor.
Vanessa's mouth opened.
No words came.
Michael nodded slowly.
“That's what I thought.””
He went to the dining table and sat beside his mother.
Arthur lowered himself into his chair.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Michael took Evelyn's hand.
Her fingers were cold.
“Mom, why didn't you tell me?””
Evelyn squeezed his hand.
“Because you were happy.””
Michael's eyes burned.
“I was happy because I thought you were safe.””
“We didn't want to take that from you.””
“You didn't.””
He looked toward Vanessa.
“She did.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“You're blaming me for everything.””
Michael looked at her.
“You want me to blame someone else?””
“I was overwhelmed!””
“Then you tell me.””
“I did tell you.””
“When?””
“Every time I said I couldn't do this anymore.””
Michael shook his head.
“You told me you were tired. You never told me you were treating them like this.””
“I didn't hurt them.””
Arthur spoke quietly.
“You humiliated us.””
Vanessa snapped back.
“I fed you!””
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
“Today?””
Vanessa froze.
Michael looked at her.
Arthur continued.
“You took our breakfast away.””
“I gave it back.””
“After telling us we weren't worth waiting on.””
Michael's jaw tightened.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You don't understand what happens when you're gone.””
Michael answered immediately.
“Then tell me.””
She stared at him.
“Tell me what happens.””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“Sometimes your father gets angry.””
Arthur scoffed.
“I get angry when you lock the pantry.””
Michael's head turned sharply.
“What?””
Vanessa's face changed.
Arthur pointed toward the kitchen.
“She locks the pantry.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Because you eat between meals.””
“I eat when I'm hungry.””
“You've gained weight.””
Evelyn whispered, “Arthur barely eats.””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“You locked food away?””
“It was for organization.””
“Where?””
Arthur pointed.
Michael stood and walked toward the pantry.
The door had a small brass latch.
He opened it.
Inside were canned goods, cereal, bread, snacks, bottled water.
He stared.
Then he noticed something else.
A second lock.
Michael touched it.
His fingers trembled.
“Why is there a lock on this?””
Vanessa's voice came from behind him.
“I lost the key.””
Michael turned.
“You lost it?””
“Yes.””
Arthur shook his head.
“She has it.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Stop lying.””
Arthur's expression remained calm.
“I watched you lock it yesterday.””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
She folded her arms.
“You're going to believe everything they say now?””
Michael stepped closer.
“I don't know what to believe.””
Then his eyes landed on the small hook beside the refrigerator.
A key hung from it.
Vanessa saw him looking.
Her face went pale.
Michael walked over.
He took the key.
Arthur said nothing.
Michael inserted it into the pantry lock.
Click.
The door opened.
He turned toward his father.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Arthur looked down.
“Because I didn't want my son fighting his wife over groceries.””
Michael closed his eyes.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then he heard a sound behind him.
A drawer opening.
Vanessa had moved toward the counter.
Michael turned.
She was holding something.
A small white envelope.
She stared at it.
Then at him.
Michael's eyes narrowed.
“What is that?””
Vanessa slowly closed her fingers around it.
“Nothing.””
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
Michael took one step forward.
“Vanessa.””
She backed away.
“This has nothing to do with your parents.””
“Then you won't mind showing me.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Michael looked at Arthur and Evelyn.
Then back at his wife.
“What's in the envelope?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Your mother knows.””
Evelyn's face went blank.
Michael turned.
“Mom?””
Evelyn looked terrified.
“I didn't want you to find out this way.””
Michael's stomach dropped.
“Find out what?””
Evelyn looked at the envelope in Vanessa's hand.
Then she whispered the words that made Michael's entire world tilt.
“She isn't trying to get us out of the house.””
May you like
A beat of silence.
“She’s trying to get the house.””
