Chapter 6: The Man at the Door
Nobody breathed.
The man's voice came again.
“Vanessa. Open the door.””
Michael stared at her.
“Who is Derek?””
She shook her head.
“Don't open it.””
Arthur gripped his cane.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa whispered, “Nobody.””
Michael gave her a cold look.
“Nobody doesn't show up at my house demanding to see my wife.””
Another knock.
This one rattled the glass beside the door.
“Vanessa!””
Evelyn moved closer to Arthur.
Michael stepped between them and the entrance.
He looked through the narrow window.
A dark sedan sat at the curb.
A man stood on the porch.
Mid-forties.
Black jacket.
Hands in his pockets.
He looked directly toward the window.
Michael stepped back.
The man smiled.
Michael felt something cold move through his stomach.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “open the door.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because he's dangerous.””
Arthur looked at her.
“You know him.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Michael waited.
Finally she said, “He was helping me.””
“With what?””
She didn't answer.
Michael's voice sharpened.
“With what?””
“Money.””
Arthur whispered, “Oh, no.””
Michael looked at the letter again.
Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
He looked toward the front door.
“Did you borrow money from him?””
Vanessa nodded.
“How much?””
“Not that much.””
“Then how much?””
She hesitated.
“Seventy-five.””
Michael stared.
“Seventy-five thousand dollars?””
“I thought I could pay it back.””
“With what?””
“My business.””
“What business?””
“My online store.””
Michael rubbed his forehead.
“You told me that business was doing well.””
“It was.””
“When?””
“Before.””
“Before what?””
She looked toward the door.
“Before Derek.””
The man outside knocked again.
“Vanessa, I’m done waiting.””
Michael walked toward the entrance.
Vanessa grabbed his wrist.
“Michael, please.””
He looked down at her hand.
Then at her face.
“What did you promise him?””
“Nothing.””
“Vanessa.””
“I told him I'd pay.””
“That's not a promise?””
“I didn't know the interest would grow.””
Michael's eyes widened.
“How much do you owe him now?””
She whispered, “One hundred and forty.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
Michael looked at the bank letter.
“And you tried to get two hundred and eighty thousand from my house.””
“I was going to pay him.””
“You were going to use my house.””
“I was going to save us.””
Michael's voice broke.
“You weren't saving us.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You were saving yourself.””
She flinched.
The knocking stopped.
That silence was worse.
Michael looked toward the door.
“Where did he go?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Arthur whispered, “Michael.””
Michael turned.
Arthur pointed toward the side window.
The dark sedan was moving.
It rolled slowly down the street.
Michael watched until it disappeared.
He exhaled.
Vanessa sank into a chair.
“I’m sorry.””
Michael didn't respond.
She looked up at him.
“I never wanted it to get this far.””
“How far did you want it to get?””
“I just needed time.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I know.””
“You lied to the bank.””
“I know.””
“You mistreated my parents.””
“I was angry.””
“You locked their food away.””
“I was trying to control expenses.””
Michael shook his head.
“You keep giving different names to the same thing.””
Vanessa covered her face.
Evelyn approached slowly.
“Vanessa.””
Vanessa looked up.
Evelyn's voice was quiet.
“Why did you hate us?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I don't hate you.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa looked toward Michael.
“Because every time he looked at you, I felt like he was looking at the people who knew him before me.””
Evelyn frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you had a part of him I could never have.””
Michael stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa stood.
“You have memories with him. His childhood. His first house. His first car.
His father teaching him to work. His mother packing his lunches. You know every version of him.””
Evelyn's eyes softened.
“That doesn't take anything away from you.””
Vanessa laughed through tears.
“It felt like it did.””
Michael looked at her.
“You could have told me.””
“I was ashamed.””
“So you punished them?””
“I didn't know how to stop.””
Arthur's voice was firm.
“You knew how to stop every morning.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You knew what you were doing.””
She didn't answer.
Michael walked to the dining table and picked up the forged agreement.
He folded it carefully.
Then he placed it beside the bank letter.
“I need you to leave.””
Vanessa froze.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“This is my home too.””
“No.””
Her face changed.
“We're married.””
“That doesn't make this yours.””
“You can't throw me out.””
“I can ask you to leave.””
“You're serious?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“After everything I've done for you?””
Michael's eyes hardened.
“You mean everything you've done to them.””
“I loved you.””
“Maybe you did.””
He looked at the floor.
“But love doesn't explain this.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Where am I supposed to go?””
Michael didn't answer.
She shook her head.
“You're really doing this.””
Arthur watched silently.
Evelyn looked at her son.
“Michael…”
He turned.
“What?””
She pointed toward the hallway.
“There is something you need to see first.””
Michael frowned.
“What?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Before you decide anything.””
Vanessa's face suddenly changed.
“Evelyn, don't.””
Michael looked between them.
“What is it?””
Evelyn walked toward the hallway.
She stopped outside Vanessa's home office.
“There.””
Michael opened the door.
The room was immaculate.
A desk.
A computer.
A filing cabinet.
A small printer.
Vanessa stood behind him.
“Michael, please don't.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
She didn't answer.
He opened the top drawer.
Invoices.
Bank statements.
Receipts.
He opened the second.
More paperwork.
Then the third.
Empty.
Michael frowned.
He looked at the filing cabinet.
One drawer was locked.
“Key.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Vanessa.””
“I don't have it.””
Michael looked at her.
“You have the key to the pantry.””
“That doesn't mean I have every key.””
Arthur walked into the doorway.
“The blue one.””
Vanessa stared at him.
Arthur pointed to a ceramic bowl on the shelf.
“It's underneath.””
Michael reached into the bowl.
A small blue key lay beneath several coins.
He picked it up.
Vanessa whispered, “Don't.””
Michael unlocked the cabinet.
Inside were folders.
He pulled out the first.
*HOUSE*
The second:
*BANK*
The third:
*MICHAEL*
His hands stopped.
He looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
“Nothing.””
He opened the folder.
His birth certificate.
Copies of his driver's license.
Old tax documents.
Marriage paperwork.
Property records.
Michael's stomach tightened.
“Why do you have all this?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I was organizing.””
He opened another folder.
There were photocopies of his parents' identification.
Their medical information.
Their Social Security paperwork.
Their insurance documents.
Michael turned around.
“You took these?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“They were already here.””
“No.””
He held up the papers.
“My parents keep their documents locked in their room.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Michael looked at Arthur.
“Dad?””
Arthur's face had gone pale.
“I thought they were missing.””
Michael turned sharply.
“What?””
Arthur nodded.
“Some of our papers disappeared last year.””
Evelyn came into the room.
“I thought I had misplaced them.””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you take them?””
She began crying.
“I wasn't going to hurt anybody.””
“Then why?””
“I needed them.””
“For what?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Michael opened the folder marked *HOUSE*.
Inside was a document he had never seen.
He pulled it out.
It was a property transfer form.
His name appeared at the top.
His parents' names were listed as witnesses.
And in the space where the new owner was supposed to be named, there was another name.
Michael stared at it.
Vanessa whispered, “Michael…”
He slowly looked up.
The name on the document wasn't Vanessa's.
It wasn't Derek's.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone Michael recognized.
Someone who had been dead for nearly five years.
His father's name.
Michael's face went blank.
“Dad…”
Arthur stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Michael held up the document.
Arthur looked at it.
His cane slipped from his hand.
It struck the floor with a heavy crack.
Arthur whispered, “That's my signature.””
Michael's eyes widened.
“But you said you never signed anything.””
“I didn't.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“What does it say?””
Michael turned the paper over.
There was a handwritten note on the back.
Six words.
He read them aloud.
“*The house was never the real target.*”
Vanessa backed into the wall.
Michael looked at her.
“Then what was?””
Before she could answer, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Michael?””
Michael's face tightened.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then the voice said:
“You need to stop looking at your wife.””
Michael glanced at Vanessa.
The caller continued.
“She's not the person you should be afraid of.””
Michael's blood ran cold.
“Who are you?””
The man laughed softly.
“You'll find out tonight.””
The call ended.
Michael stared at the screen.
Then another notification appeared.
A photograph.
He opened it.
His breath caught.
It was a picture of his parents.
Taken that morning.
Through the kitchen window.
And beneath it was a message:
*You have until midnight to give me what your father stole.*
Michael slowly turned toward Arthur.
His father was staring at him.
“Dad,” Michael whispered.
Arthur's face had gone gray.
“I knew this day would come.””
Michael stepped closer.
“What did you steal?””
Arthur looked at his son.
And for the first time in Michael's life, his father looked genuinely afraid.
“I didn't steal anything.””
May you like
He swallowed.
“I hid it.””
