Chapter 2: When the Door Closed
Vanessa returned to the kitchen and began scraping food from the plates into the trash.
The metal fork dragged against ceramic.
Scrape.
Scrape.
Scrape.
Evelyn stood behind her, hands folded nervously in front of her.
Arthur remained seated, his cane between his knees.
“Vanessa,” Evelyn said, “if we’ve done something wrong, you can tell us.””
Vanessa didn't turn around.
“You haven't done anything wrong.””
“Then why are you upset?””
“I’m not upset.””
“You sound upset.””
Vanessa stopped scraping.
She slowly turned.
“You know what I’m tired of?””
Evelyn said nothing.
“Everyone acting like because Michael is your son, I’m supposed to become your nurse.””
Arthur's jaw tightened.
“No one asked you to be our nurse.””
“Really?””
Vanessa laughed without humor.
“Who gets his calls when you need something?””
Arthur opened his mouth.
Vanessa raised a hand.
“Who drives you to appointments?””
Evelyn answered quietly.
“Michael usually does.””
“And who gets blamed when he can't?””
Evelyn looked down.
Vanessa pointed toward the sink.
“Exactly.””
Arthur pushed his chair back.
“I'll wash the dishes.””
Vanessa looked him up and down.
“With your leg?””
“I can wash a plate.””
“I didn't say you couldn't.””
Arthur took his cane and stood.
His movement was slow.
He reached for the first plate.
Vanessa snatched it away.
“No.””
Arthur stared at her.
“You just told us to clean the kitchen.””
“You can clean the counters.””
He looked at her in disbelief.
“And Evelyn?””
“She can wash the dishes.””
Evelyn immediately stepped toward the sink.
“All right.””
Arthur looked at his wife.
“Evelyn—”
She touched his arm.
“It's okay.””
Vanessa watched them.
There was no apology in her face.
No embarrassment.
Only impatience.
Evelyn turned on the faucet.
The water ran over her trembling fingers.
Arthur lowered himself back into his chair.
After a moment, he whispered, “We don't have to stay here.””
Evelyn glanced at him.
“Where would we go?””
Arthur didn't answer.
They both knew the truth.
Their old house had been sold years ago. Michael had insisted they move closer after Arthur's health declined. Vanessa had initially welcomed the arrangement.
At least, that's what Michael believed.
Evelyn washed the dishes slowly.
A plate slipped slightly in her wet hands.
Vanessa immediately snapped her fingers.
“Careful.””
“I'm sorry.””
“That plate was part of the set.””
“I know.””
“Then don't break it.””
Arthur stared at Vanessa.
“She said she was sorry.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I heard her.””
Arthur's voice hardened.
“Then there's no reason to keep talking to her like that.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You want to tell me how to run my kitchen?””
“No.””
“Good.””
Arthur looked away.
Vanessa walked toward the hallway.
“I have errands.””
Evelyn dried her hands.
“Should we wait for lunch?””
Vanessa stopped.
“No.””
“What should we eat?””
“There's bread.””
Evelyn stared at her.
“Just bread?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“You're adults.””
Then she disappeared down the hallway.
A bedroom door opened.
A drawer slammed.
Keys jingled.
Arthur looked at Evelyn.
“You all right?””
Evelyn nodded, but her eyes had already filled with tears.
Arthur reached for her hand.
“Come sit.””
“I need to finish.””
“Leave it.””
“She'll be angry.””
Arthur looked toward the hallway.
“She already is.””
Evelyn sat beside him.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Arthur whispered, “Maybe we should tell Michael.””
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because he'll feel like he has to choose.””
“He should know.””
“He loves her.””
“He loves us too.””
“I know.””
Arthur squeezed her hand.
“Then let him decide what kind of man he wants to be.””
Evelyn stared down at the wedding ring on her finger.
“I don't want to destroy his marriage.””
Arthur's face softened.
“This isn't something you would destroy.””
A car door slammed outside.
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“Is that Vanessa?””
Arthur listened.
The footsteps outside disappeared.
Then silence returned.
Neither of them noticed the second sound.
A truck door opening.
Michael had made it only halfway to the office.
He had reached the highway before realizing something was missing.
His work folder.
The black leather folder containing a contract he needed for an afternoon meeting.
He had cursed under his breath, turned around, and driven home.
He pulled into the driveway quietly.
The house looked exactly as it always did.
Bright.
Peaceful.
Safe.
Michael grabbed the folder from his truck and walked toward the front door.
His hand reached for the knob.
Then he heard Vanessa's voice from inside.
“You two don't get waited on.””
Michael froze.
He looked at the door.
His hand slowly dropped.
Vanessa continued.
“Clean this kitchen.””
Michael's face changed.
He stepped closer.
Arthur's voice followed.
“Vanessa, there's no need to speak to your mother like that.””
Michael closed his eyes.
His fingers tightened around the folder.
He could hear water running.
A plate being set into the sink.
Then Evelyn's quiet voice.
“Please. He hasn't eaten.””
Michael's eyes opened.
His stomach dropped.
He stood there, completely still.
Vanessa answered.
“Tell Michael, and you're both out.””
Michael looked down at the folder in his hand.
Then back at the door.
For the first time in years, he didn't know whether he wanted to walk into his own home.
He turned the knob.
The door opened.
May you like
Vanessa looked up.
Her face went white.
