She Told Me Not to Tell Dad / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Smile

The next thirty minutes changed everything I thought I knew about my son’s marriage.

Vanessa didn’t answer the call.

She simply stared at the phone until it stopped ringing.

Marcus noticed.

“So you know her?””

Vanessa quickly put the phone in her pocket.

“It’s nothing.””

I almost laughed.

Nothing.

That was the word people used when they wanted everyone else to ignore something obvious.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who is Dr. Carter?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She’s nobody.””

Lily tightened her grip on my hand.

That was when Marcus noticed.

His daughter wasn’t afraid of what had happened.

She was afraid of what would happen next.

He turned toward Lily.

“Sweetheart, did Mom ever take you to see someone?””

Lily nodded slowly.

“Sometimes.””

Vanessa’s head snapped around.

“Lily.””

Again.

That tone.

A threat disguised as a name.

Marcus heard it too.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

But everyone in the room felt the anger underneath.

“Don’t do that.””

Vanessa frowned.

“Do what?””

“Make her afraid to talk.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than shouting.

I had watched my son grow up.

I had seen him angry before.

When he was sixteen and someone stole his bike.

When his father died.

When he lost his first job.

But I had never seen him look at his wife like that.

Like he was seeing a stranger.

Marcus picked up Lily’s medical records from the kitchen counter.

“Why is there a psychologist’s name on these papers?””

Vanessa moved quickly.

“Give those to me.””

“No.””

The single word stopped her.

Marcus opened the folder.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?””

Vanessa said nothing.

I watched my son read the report.

His jaw tightened.

“Lily told her?””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“She exaggerates.””

Marcus looked up.

“She told a doctor you hurt her?””

“She plays games.””

I felt my stomach turn.

A child.

A seven-year-old child.

And Vanessa was blaming her.

Marcus put the papers down.

“Why would she lie?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“Because children want attention.””

Lily suddenly spoke.

“I don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

She was trembling.

“I don’t want attention.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I just wanted Daddy to believe me.””

Marcus looked like someone had punched him.

He walked over and knelt in front of her.

“Lily…”

She looked down.

“I tried to tell you before.””

His voice broke.

“When?””

“Last month.””

“Why didn’t I hear you?””

Her answer was so quiet I almost missed it.

“Because Mom said you’d leave us.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, I saw the guilt hit him.

The realization that he had been standing beside the truth and refusing to see it.

I placed a hand on his shoulder.

But before anyone could speak, Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

Marcus stood.

“No.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You can’t keep me here.””

“I’m not keeping you here.””

He pointed toward the door.

“You’re not taking the kids.””

The anger disappeared from Vanessa’s face.

“What did you say?””

“You heard me.””

She stepped closer.

“You think you can just take my children?””

Marcus looked toward Lily and Noah.

Then back at his wife.

“I think I can protect them.””

Vanessa stared at him.

And then she smiled.

Not a scared smile.

A confident one.

“You have no idea what you’re about to lose.””

The next morning, Marcus received an email from an attorney.

Attached was a custody petition.

But that wasn’t the part that made him drop the papers.

It was the accusation written at the top.

*“Father’s mother has displayed unstable behavior and has attempted to alienate the children from their mother.””*

My name was on it.

And Vanessa had already prepared her first attack.
