She Told Me Not to Tell Dad / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Truth Daniel Left Behind

I couldn’t open the letter.

Not immediately.

Because some truths have a weight.

And once you lift them, you can never put them back.

Marcus sat beside me.

“Mom.””

I looked at my son.

The little boy who once slept with a nightlight because he was afraid of monsters.

The teenager who thought he knew everything.

The man who was now learning that monsters sometimes looked like people you loved.

I unfolded the paper.

Daniel’s handwriting filled the page.

My hands shook as I read.

*Mary,*

*If you are reading this, I failed to protect you.*

I covered my mouth.

*Vanessa has spent years convincing people that anyone who questions her is unstable. She did it to Sarah. She did it to Ethan. She tried to do it to me.*

Marcus leaned closer.

I continued.

*The night of my accident, I was going to meet someone who had evidence against her.*

My heart stopped.

Accident.

That word suddenly sounded different.

*I don’t know what she knows. I don’t know how far she will go. But if anything happens to me, don’t confront her without proof.*

I looked up.

“Daniel knew.””

Marcus was silent.

The letter continued.

*The person helping Vanessa is someone close to us. Someone who has access to family information.*

My stomach tightened.

Then came the final paragraph.

*Mary, trust Marcus. He is stronger than he thinks. And if Lily ever needs you, protect her the way you protected him.*

The letter ended.

I cried.

Not loudly.

Just silently.

Because twelve years of grief had suddenly become something else.

A warning.

A responsibility.

Marcus hugged me.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“We both missed it.””

That afternoon, the police reopened the old records.

Not because of Daniel’s death.

Not yet.

But because of Lily.

The evidence against Vanessa was growing.

Medical reports.

Psychological evaluations.

Witness statements.

Then we received a call.

Vanessa had violated the temporary custody agreement.

She had gone to Lily’s school.

Marcus drove there immediately.

I followed.

We found Vanessa standing outside the classroom.

Smiling.

Talking to the teacher.

Like nothing had happened.

Marcus walked toward her.

“What are you doing here?””

She turned.

“Picking up my daughter.””

“No.””

Her smile disappeared.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

The teacher looked uncomfortable.

“I was told there was a misunderstanding.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“See?””

She pointed.

“Everyone thinks you’re overreacting.””

Marcus pulled out his phone.

“I recorded everything.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked nervous.

Then angry.

“You’re just like your father.””

Marcus froze.

“What does that mean?””

She stepped closer.

“Your father thought he could expose me too.””

My blood ran cold.

The teacher looked between us.

“Expose you?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Just one second.

But it was enough.

Marcus saw it.

“You remember.””

She said nothing.

“You remember Dad investigating you.””

Still nothing.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“He should have stopped digging.””

Nobody moved.

Because those words were not a confession.

But they were close enough to make everyone afraid.

That night, while reviewing the recording, Marcus noticed something.

A reflection in the school hallway window.

Behind Vanessa.

A man standing near the entrance.

Watching.

Marcus paused the video.

He zoomed in.

And my heart dropped.

Because I knew him.

Everyone in our family knew him.

It was the person Daniel warned us about.

The person who had been helping Vanessa all along.

May you like

My brother.

Marcus’s uncle.
