She Told Me Not to Tell Dad / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Lie She Built

The hardest thing about betrayal is not discovering the truth.

It is realizing how carefully someone built the lie.

For years, Vanessa had smiled at neighbors.

She volunteered at Lily’s school.

She brought cookies to family gatherings.

Everyone loved her.

Everyone except the little girl who lived behind her front door.

Two days after we discovered the bruises, Marcus and I sat in a lawyer’s office.

The walls were covered with framed certificates.

The room smelled like old paper and coffee.

Marcus looked exhausted.

“I should have seen it.””

I reached across the table.

“Marcus.””

“No, Mom.””

He stared at his hands.

“I was there.””

His voice lowered.

“I was in the same house.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because he was right.

Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself.

The attorney, Ms. Reynolds, opened the custody documents.

“Vanessa is claiming you are creating conflict in the home.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Me?””

“She claims Lily is influenced by you and your mother.””

I almost stood up.

“She is seven years old.””

Ms. Reynolds nodded.

“And that is why we need evidence.””

Evidence.

A word that sounded simple.

But behind it were recordings, medical reports, conversations, and painful memories.

That afternoon, Marcus and I returned home.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.

I sat beside her.

“What are you making?””

She covered the paper.

“Nothing.””

I smiled gently.

“You always used to show me your drawings.””

She looked down.

“Mom said my drawings were ugly.””

My heart broke.

“She said that?””

Lily nodded.

“She said I made the house look messy.””

Marcus heard that from the doorway.

He stopped.

“Lily.””

She looked scared.

“I’m sorry.””

He immediately walked over.

“No. No, sweetheart.””

He knelt beside her.

“You never have to apologize for telling me the truth.””

Lily looked at him.

“Really?””

“Really.””

That night, Marcus searched through old messages.

At first, he found nothing.

Then he found one.

A text from Vanessa six months earlier.

*Lily is acting crazy again. I can’t handle her.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*Maybe she needs to learn who is in charge.*

His face went pale.

But there was something else.

A message from a number he didn’t recognize.

*How long are you going to keep pretending everything is fine?*

Marcus opened it.

The sender was Dr. Evelyn Carter.

The psychologist.

The message was short.

*Marcus, we need to talk about what Lily told me. Vanessa cannot know I contacted you.*

Marcus looked at me.

“Mom…”

I knew from his voice.

Something worse was coming.

He opened the rest of the conversation.

Dr. Carter had written:

*Your daughter is not the only person Vanessa has hurt.*

Marcus stopped scrolling.

“What does that mean?””

I leaned closer.

The next message loaded.

And it contained a name.

A name I recognized.

A name from Vanessa’s past.

A name she had told Marcus was dead.

May you like

The message read:

*You need to speak with Sarah Mitchell before Vanessa finds her first.*
