Chapter 9: The Final Trap
My brother Thomas arrived at my house the next morning.
He didn’t knock.
He walked in like he still belonged there.
“Mary.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Marcus stood immediately.
“What are you doing here?””
Thomas smiled.
“I heard things got complicated.””
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
His expression changed slightly.
“Knew what?””
I placed Daniel’s letter on the table.
Thomas looked at it.
Only for a second.
But that second was enough.
He recognized it.
Marcus saw it too.
“You knew about Dad’s investigation.””
Thomas sighed.
“You always were too much like him.””
Those words hurt.
Because they confirmed everything.
“You helped her,” Marcus said.
Thomas looked away.
“I was trying to protect the family.””
I laughed.
A painful, empty laugh.
“Protect us?””
I pointed upstairs.
“From what? The truth?””
Thomas sat down.
“You don’t understand Vanessa.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“We understand her now.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You think she’s the only one who made mistakes?””
That sentence changed the room.
Marcus stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Thomas looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw the little brother I grew up with.
The boy who followed me everywhere.
Then I saw the man he became.
“I helped her clean things up.””
My heart broke.
“Clean what up?””
He didn’t answer.
“Thomas.””
He looked down.
“Evidence.””
Silence.
“You destroyed evidence?””
He nodded.
“Some.””
Marcus looked sick.
“Why?””
Thomas rubbed his face.
“Because Vanessa convinced me Daniel was obsessed. She said he was ruining Marcus’s marriage.””
“You believed her?””
“I wanted to.””
That was the truth.
Sometimes people don’t believe lies because they are convincing.
They believe them because the truth is too painful.
Thomas reached into his jacket.
“I have something.””
He placed a small drive on the table.
“I kept one thing.””
Marcus picked it up.
“What is this?””
“The backup.””
The room went silent.
“Backup of what?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Everything.””
The drive contained Daniel’s final evidence.
Videos.
Messages.
Documents.
And one recording.
A conversation between Vanessa and Thomas.
We played it.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“You just need to make sure Daniel doesn’t talk.””
Thomas’s voice answered.
“He’s my brother-in-law.””
“And I’m your family too.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“If he keeps pushing, he’ll lose everything.””
Marcus stopped the recording.
Nobody spoke.
The police were called.
This time, Vanessa couldn’t control the story.
She couldn’t rewrite the facts.
She couldn’t make Lily look like a liar.
But Vanessa still had one move left.
Before she was arrested, she sent Marcus a message.
Just three words.
*Come alone. Please.*
Marcus wanted to ignore it.
But I knew my son.
He needed answers.
And sometimes the most dangerous moments happen when we think we are finally winning.
He went.
But he wasn’t alone.
The police followed from a distance.
Vanessa waited in an abandoned house outside town.
When Marcus walked inside, she looked different.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just tired.
“You brought them.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
She laughed.
“Of course you did.””
He stared at her.
“Why?””
For the first time, Vanessa looked almost human.
Almost.
“Because nobody ever chose me.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
She looked angry.
“You don’t know what I survived.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“But I know what you did.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then she said something unexpected.
“I loved Lily.””
Marcus went silent.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I did.””
The police entered.
But before they reached her, Vanessa whispered:
“There’s something you still don’t know.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
She smiled sadly.
“Lily wasn’t the only child I hurt.””
May you like
And she looked directly at him.
“Your father knew about another one.””
