Chapter 4: The Secret Vanessa Buried

Finding Sarah Mitchell took less than an hour.

The address was in an old email account Vanessa had forgotten existed.

Marcus drove.

I sat beside him.

Neither of us spoke much.

Because sometimes silence is the only thing you have when your entire understanding of someone is collapsing.

Sarah lived in a small apartment above a bakery.

She opened the door and froze when she saw Marcus.

“You’re Vanessa’s husband.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Sarah looked frightened.

“Did she send you?””

“No.””

He held up his hands.

“I’m here because of Lily.””

The fear in Sarah’s eyes changed.

She opened the door wider.

Inside, the apartment was simple.

A small couch.

A kitchen table.

A stack of children’s books.

She looked at me.

“Is Lily okay?””

That question told me everything.

Not “Why are you here?””

Not “What happened?””

Is Lily okay?

Sarah already knew.

Marcus sat down.

“Who are you?””

Sarah looked toward the window.

“My sister.””

I felt confused.

“Vanessa never mentioned a sister.””

Sarah gave a sad smile.

“She wouldn’t.””

Over the next hour, we learned the truth.

Vanessa had a sister she cut out of her life years ago.

Sarah had reported concerns about Vanessa’s behavior when they were younger.

Everyone dismissed her.

They called her jealous.

They called her dramatic.

So Sarah disappeared.

Until she saw the same patterns happening with Lily.

“She doesn’t start with hitting,” Sarah said quietly.

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

“She starts by making people doubt themselves.””

Sarah explained.

Vanessa controlled everything.

The food people ate.

The clothes they wore.

The people they spoke to.

Then came the threats.

The guilt.

The fear.

“She made me believe I was the problem,” Sarah whispered.

Marcus looked sick.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“I tried.””

Sarah opened a drawer.

Inside was a folder.

She handed it to him.

“I sent letters.””

Marcus opened them.

Every letter had been returned.

“Vanessa intercepted them.””

I looked at Sarah.

“How do you know?””

She pointed toward the final page.

A signature.

Vanessa’s signature.

Marcus closed his eyes.

The woman he married had spent years controlling every person around her.

But the worst discovery was still waiting.

Sarah pulled out one more document.

“A week before Lily’s bruises were found, Vanessa contacted me.””

Marcus looked up.

“Why?””

Sarah hesitated.

“She wanted me to disappear again.””

“Why?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she knew Lily was going to talk.””

The room went quiet.

Then Sarah said:

“There’s something else you need to know.””

She reached into the folder.

And pulled out a photograph.

A photograph of Vanessa standing beside another child.

A child Marcus had never seen before.

On the back was a date.

And a handwritten sentence.

*I’m sorry I couldn’t save him.*

Marcus turned the picture over.

May you like

And whispered:

“Who is that?””
