Chapter 11: The Brother I Never Knew Existed

I followed Amara to a small coffee shop near the park.

None of us talked on the way.

The silence felt heavier than any argument.

Brielle sat beside Amara.

I watched them.

Two young women from completely different parts of my life.

Connected by secrets they never asked for.

I sat across from them.

“Start from the beginning.””

Amara nodded.

“I was born fifteen years ago.””

I almost corrected her.

Then I remembered.

She wasn’t talking about age.

She was talking about a story.

“My mother and Marcus had twins.””

Elena’s face appeared in my mind.

“She never told me.””

“Because she didn’t know everything.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Amara opened the folder.

“The hospital records were changed.””

She placed two pages on the table.

“One baby was registered.””

I looked.

“Amara Reed.””

She nodded.

“The other baby was listed as deceased.””

My stomach tightened.

“But?””

She looked at me.

“But the baby wasn’t dead.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Brielle.

Then back at Amara.

“Where is that child?””

She swallowed.

“That’s what I spent months trying to find.””

“And?””

Her eyes moved to the documents.

“I found him.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Who?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your son.””

The words didn’t make sense.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I pushed the papers away.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

“How?””

Amara pulled out a DNA report.

Not the one Elena had.

Another one.

“This was done between me and your son’s sample.””

I stared.

“You tested my baby?””

“Not secretly.””

She quickly added.

“I got permission through Elena.””

I looked down.

My wife.

Another secret.

Of course.

“What did it show?””

Amara’s voice shook.

“He’s my biological brother.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The room became distant.

A brother.

My son.

Amara’s brother.

Marcus’s son.

Elena’s son.

But not mine?

I looked at the papers.

“What does that mean?””

Amara looked at me sadly.

“It means Marcus was right about one thing.””

My chest tightened.

“And wrong about another.””

I waited.

“He believed your son was his because of the DNA connection.””

I nodded slowly.

“And?””

“He was wrong because your son is not his.””

I stared.

“Then whose?””

Amara looked at me.

I already knew.

But I needed her to say it.

“Daniel.””

The room went quiet.

“The baby is yours.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“He has your DNA.””

My hands shook.

“But how can he also be related to Marcus?””

Amara took a breath.

“Because Marcus has a brother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She slid another document across the table.

A family record.

A name.

A name I recognized.

Not because I knew him.

Because I had heard it before.

Marcus had mentioned it.

Once.

A long time ago.

“Who is this?””

Amara answered:

“Elias Reed.””

I stared.

“Marcus’s twin brother.””

The world shifted.

“A twin?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Amara looked at me.

“Elias is your biological father.””

I couldn’t move.

The noise of the coffee shop disappeared.

My entire life rearranged itself in seconds.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“Your father was adopted.””

I laughed once.

A broken sound.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I stood.

“This is insane.””

“I know.””

“You’re telling me my father was a Reed?””

“Yes.””

“And Marcus is related to me?””

“Yes.””

I walked away from the table.

My hands went through my hair.

All my life, I thought I knew where I came from.

My father.

My family.

My name.

Everything.

But now a stranger was telling me my bloodline had been hidden from me.

Brielle came beside me.

“Dad.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked scared.

“But this explains something.””

“What?””

“Why Marcus knew about you.””

I turned.

Amara nodded.

“He wasn’t trying to steal your son.””

“He wasn’t?””

“No.””

She looked at the documents.

“He was trying to find his own family.””

I thought about Marcus.

His anger.

His desperation.

His obsession.

Suddenly, he looked different.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

But different.

“What about Elena?””

Amara looked down.

“She knew part of the truth.””

“What part?””

“That Marcus had a brother.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Amara hesitated.

“Because she thought you already knew.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She pulled out one final document.

“This was found in your father’s old belongings.””

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

A letter.

Written decades ago.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the first line made my heart stop.

To my son Daniel.

I looked at Amara.

“Who gave you this?””

She answered quietly.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

Amara nodded.

“She’s alive.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“My mother died when I was young.””

Amara shook her head.

“No.””

My hands went cold.

“What are you saying?””

May you like

She looked at me.

“I’m saying someone lied about your family before you ever met Elena.””
