Chapter 6: The Truth My Wife Buried
Elena looked up from the hospital bed.
The moment our eyes met, I knew.
She knew.
Not everything.
But enough.
The room was dim except for the small lamp beside her bed. Our son slept peacefully nearby, unaware that his arrival had uncovered secrets buried for years.
“Daniel?””
Her voice was careful.
Too careful.
I closed the door behind me.
“We need to talk.””
Her expression changed.
A mother’s instinct.
A wife’s fear.
“Is something wrong with the baby?””
“No.””
I looked at the bassinet.
“He’s fine.””
She relaxed slightly.
Then she looked at me again.
“So what happened?””
I walked closer.
“Who is Marcus Reed?””
The color disappeared from her face.
That was my answer.
I didn’t need words.
I had one.
A reaction.
A second of fear.
A crack in the person I thought I knew.
“Daniel…”
“Who is he?””
She looked away.
“Where did you hear that name?””
“Answer the question.””
She closed her eyes.
For a few seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
“He’s someone from my past.””
I laughed quietly.
“Your past?””
“Yes.””
“Why did he call me?””
Her eyes snapped back.
“He called you?””
“Yes.””
She looked genuinely shocked.
“What did he say?””
“That you never told me the truth.””
Elena looked down.
My heart sank.
Because she didn’t ask what truth.
She asked what he said.
That meant she already knew there was one.
“What did you hide from me?””
She swallowed.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I spent years trusting you.””
“I know.””
“Then don’t make me beg for the truth.””
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
“After another year?””
“Daniel.””
“After another five years?””
She looked hurt.
But I couldn’t stop.
Because I had spent the entire day discovering pieces of my own life from other people.
First my daughter.
Then a stranger.
I needed to hear something from my wife.
“I need to know what’s going on.””
She looked at the baby.
Then at me.
“Marcus is my ex.””
I nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
The word came out empty.
“Before me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why is he involved now?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation destroyed something inside me.
“Elena.””
She took a breath.
“Because Marcus is the father of my first child.””
I stared at her.
The room became silent.
“What?””
She started crying.
“I was nineteen.””
I stepped back.
“Nineteen?””
“Yes.””
“You had a child?””
“Yes.””
“Where is that child?””
She covered her mouth.
For a moment, she looked like she might collapse.
“Daniel…”
“Where?””
Her voice was barely audible.
“She’s alive.””
The word echoed.
She’s alive.
I grabbed the back of a chair.
A daughter.
Another child.
Another life.
A secret.
“How long were you going to keep this from me?””
“I wasn’t.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would leave.””
I stared at her.
“You thought I would leave because you had a child?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I thought you would leave because of how it happened.””
I waited.
She looked down.
“Marcus wasn’t just my boyfriend.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
“He was controlling.””
The room felt colder.
“He hurt me.””
I softened slightly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wanted a new life.””
I looked at her.
“You got one.””
“I know.””
“Then why is he back?””
She wiped her tears.
“Because he found out about the baby.””
“Our baby?””
She nodded.
“He thinks there is a connection.””
“What connection?””
She looked terrified.
And then she said:
“Daniel, I need you to understand something.””
I waited.
“Marcus doesn’t believe our son is yours.””
The words cut through me.
“What?””
She reached for my hand.
I stepped away.
“No.””
“Daniel, please.””
“No.””
My mind raced.
The hospital.
The pregnancy.
The test.
The hidden appointment.
Brielle’s letter.
The phone call.
Everything crashed together.
“Did you test the baby?””
Elena didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Did you?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Yes.””
My voice became quiet.
“Why?””
She looked at me with tears running down her face.
“Because Marcus said something that scared me.””
“What?””
She looked toward the bassinet.
Then back at me.
“He said he had proof.””
My heart pounded.
“Proof of what?””
Before she could answer, someone knocked on the hospital room door.
Once.
Twice.
Elena froze.
I turned.
The door opened slowly.
A man stood there.
Tall.
Older.
His expression was calm.
Too calm.
He looked directly at me.
Then at Elena.
Then at the baby.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“But we need to stop pretending.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Who are you?””
The man stepped inside.
And when he spoke his next words, my entire world changed.
“I’m Marcus Reed.””
May you like
He looked at the baby.
“And I’m here because that child might be my son.””
