Chapter 13: The Person Behind the Lies
I looked at Elena.
She looked back at me.
And for the first time since I met her, I wondered if I truly knew her at all.
Marcus’s words stayed in my head.
The person who destroyed our families is someone you trust.
Someone I trust.
The room felt smaller.
Brielle stood near the doorway, watching both of us.
She noticed the silence.
“Dad?””
I didn’t answer.
My eyes stayed on Elena.
She understood immediately.
“What did he say?””
I held the phone tightly.
“You know.””
Her face changed.
A tiny movement.
But enough.
“You know what he meant.””
Elena sat down slowly.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I need the truth before anyone else gives it to me.””
Brielle stepped closer.
“Dad.””
I looked at her.
“I need you to go upstairs.””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
“Brielle.””
“I’m not leaving you alone with another secret.””
The sentence hurt because it was true.
I looked at my daughter.
“You shouldn’t have had to carry any of this.””
She shook her head.
“I know.””
Then she looked at Elena.
“But she did.””
Elena closed her eyes.
The silence said enough.
I sat across from my wife.
“Who changed the records?””
She didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Her hands trembled.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Start with what you do know.””
She looked toward the window.
“When I met you, I knew you were different.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“You didn’t know anything about the Reed family.””
I stared.
“And?””
“I thought that was a good thing.””
“Why?””
“Because everyone connected to that family had been hurt.””
I leaned forward.
“Elena.””
She wiped her tears.
“When Marcus came back into my life, I realized he wasn’t looking for revenge.””
“What was he looking for?””
“His brother.””
I remembered.
Elias Reed.
My biological grandfather’s son.
The man who disappeared.
“The night before our wedding,” Elena whispered, “Marcus came to me.””
I froze.
“What?””
She nodded.
“He told me he had found evidence that you were connected to his family.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew before we got married?””
“Yes.””
The betrayal was physical.
Like someone had punched the air out of me.
“You married me knowing this?””
“I loved you.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
She cried.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“It doesn’t.””
I stood.
“How much did you know?””
“I knew your father’s adoption wasn’t random.””
“And?””
“I knew someone had hidden Elias’s identity.””
“Who?””
She looked down.
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“My mother protected me.””
“I believe she did.””
“Then why hide this?””
Elena looked at the letter.
“Because she discovered something.””
“What?””
“That Elias wasn’t the only one who disappeared.””
I stared.
“What are you saying?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Your mother found out someone in the Reed family was responsible for what happened.””
“Responsible for what?””
She looked at me.
“The death of your biological grandfather.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
“My grandfather died?””
“No one told you?””
I laughed bitterly.
“No.””
I walked away.
My entire life was becoming a collection of things no one told me.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes.””
“And she lied too.””
“She was trying to protect you.””
I turned around.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“But nobody protected me from the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Brielle’s phone rang.
She looked down.
Her face changed.
“What?””
I walked toward her.
“What happened?””
She showed me the screen.
A message.
From Amara.
I found the person who has been controlling everything.
My stomach dropped.
Another message appeared.
It’s not who you think.
Then:
Meet me alone.
I grabbed the phone.
“When?””
Brielle looked scared.
“Ten minutes ago.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
She looked at the location.
A familiar place.
The old Reed family property.
The place from the newspaper articles.
“No.””
Elena stood quickly.
“You can’t go there.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face went pale.
“Because that’s where everything started.””
The Reed property sat outside the city.
An abandoned mansion surrounded by overgrown trees.
The kind of place that looked like it was holding memories inside its walls.
Brielle and I arrived together.
I didn’t want her there.
But I knew better than to leave her behind.
The front door was already open.
“Amara?”” Brielle called.
No answer.
We stepped inside.
Dust covered the furniture.
Old family portraits lined the hallway.
I stopped at one.
A man.
A woman.
A young boy.
And beside them…
Elias.
My father.
A child I had never known existed.
A family I had never belonged to.
“Dad.””
Brielle pointed.
A note sat on the table.
My name was written on it.
*Daniel.*
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
If you’re reading this, they failed to keep you away.
A sound came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
I looked up.
A figure appeared at the top of the staircase.
An older woman.
My breath stopped.
I knew her.
Not from memory.
From photographs.
My mother.
She looked down at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Daniel.””
I couldn’t move.
“You’re alive.””
She nodded.
May you like
And whispered:
“I’m sorry it took this long for you to find me.””
