Chapter 12: The Family Tree That Was Never Real

I drove home without remembering the road.

The letter sat on the passenger seat.

I didn’t open it.

Not yet.

Because I knew once I did, there would be no going back.

Brielle sat beside me quietly.

For once, she wasn’t angry.

She was just tired.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you okay?””

I almost laughed.

“No.””

She nodded.

“I figured.””

I looked at her.

“You knew all this was possible?””

“No.””

She looked out the window.

“But I knew something was wrong.””

I reached over and squeezed her hand.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at me.

Then smiled sadly.

“You really need to stop saying that.””

“I know.””

“But?””

I looked ahead.

“But I mean it now.””

She was quiet.

Then she nodded.

When we arrived home, Elena was waiting.

She stood when she saw the letter.

Her face changed.

“You found it.””

I stopped.

“You knew?””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The anger came back immediately.

“You knew about this letter?””

“Yes.””

“You knew my mother was alive?””

She looked at me.

“I knew she might be.””

“Might be?””

Elena walked closer.

“Daniel, I need you to understand.””

“I’m done understanding.””

The words came out harsher than I intended.

But I meant them.

“I spent my entire life believing one story.””

I held up the letter.

“And everyone around me knew it was false.””

Elena cried.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to protect the truth.””

She didn’t argue.

That hurt more.

“Tell me.””

She looked down.

“Your mother discovered the Reed family connection years ago.””

“How?””

“Through your father’s adoption records.””

“And?””

“She found out your biological grandfather was Elias Reed.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Elena hesitated.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“She was afraid the Reed family would come back.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Her voice became quieter.

“Because there was a reason your father’s identity was hidden.””

My chest tightened.

“What reason?””

She walked to the table.

She placed a folder down.

“This.””

Inside were newspaper clippings.

Old ones.

I read the headlines.

*Local Business Heir Disappears After Family Scandal*

Another:

*Reed Family Investigation Continues*

I looked at Elena.

“What am I looking at?””

She whispered:

“The reason Elias disappeared.””

I read the article.

A name appeared repeatedly.

Marcus Reed’s father.

A powerful businessman.

Accusations.

Fraud.

A family empire collapsing.

I looked up.

“What does this have to do with me?””

Elena’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because your father wasn’t just hiding his identity.””

She paused.

“He was hiding from his own family.””

I looked at the articles again.

The pieces started connecting.

The hidden birth records.

The changed hospital files.

The secrets.

The lies.

Someone had spent years making sure certain people stayed separated.

“Who changed the records?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

This time, I recognized the number.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

His voice sounded exhausted.

“Daniel.””

“What do you want?””

“I need you to listen.””

I almost hung up.

Then he said:

“Your mother is in danger.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“The people who hid the truth fifteen years ago know you found out.””

I looked at Elena.

She had gone pale.

“How do you know?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because they came for me too.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

Marcus’s voice lowered.

“The same person who changed your family records.””

I waited.

“Daniel, you need to know something.””

“What?””

His next words made my blood run cold.

“The person who destroyed our families is someone you trust.””

The call ended.

I looked around the room.

At Elena.

At Brielle.

At the letter from my mother.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered if the biggest secret wasn’t buried in the past.

Maybe it was standing right in front of me.
