Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Connected Two Families
I left the hospital without saying goodbye.
I didn’t know where I was going.
I just knew I couldn’t stay in that room.
The hallway lights blurred as I walked.
Every person passing by had somewhere to go.
A destination.
A reason.
I felt like I had lost both.
Outside, the night air hit my face.
I sat in my car for twenty minutes without turning on the engine.
My phone remained in my hand.
Brielle’s message stayed on the screen.
*Dad, there’s something Marcus doesn’t know either.*
I called her.
She answered immediately.
“Dad?””
Her voice sounded nervous.
“Where are you?””
“At Maya’s.””
“Come outside.””
There was a pause.
“Are you okay?””
“No.””
I heard her breathe in.
Then:
“I’ll be there.””
Ten minutes later, she walked out wearing a hoodie over her pajamas.
When she saw my face, she stopped.
“What happened?””
I looked at my daughter.
The same daughter I thought I needed to protect.
The same daughter who had been carrying secrets while I was busy believing everything was fine.
“Your mother knew.””
Her face changed.
“About Marcus?””
I nodded.
Brielle looked down.
“I figured.””
The words shocked me.
“You figured?””
She sat beside me.
“Dad, I told you. I’ve known something was wrong for months.””
“Why didn’t you tell me everything?””
She looked at me.
“Because every time I tried, something happened.””
“What does that mean?””
She sighed.
“Mom would get sick. You would get called into work. The baby happened.””
She looked away.
“And then graduation came.””
The guilt hit me again.
“I’m sorry.””
She shook her head.
“Stop saying that.””
I looked at her.
She wiped her eyes.
“I don’t need apologies anymore.””
“What do you need?””
Her answer came quickly.
“I need you to believe me.””
I nodded.
“I do.””
She hesitated.
Then reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
My stomach tightened.
“What is that?””
“Something I copied.””
“From where?””
“Mom’s computer.””
I stared at her.
“Brielle.””
“I know.””
“That’s not okay.””
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“But neither is hiding the truth from your family.””
I couldn’t argue.
“What’s on it?””
“Emails.””
“Between who?””
She looked at me.
“Mom and Marcus.””
My chest tightened.
“You read them?””
“Yes.””
“What did they say?””
Brielle looked out the window.
“They weren’t planning to hurt you.””
“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“They were scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“The truth.””
I turned the flash drive over in my hand.
“Brielle, why would your mother and Marcus be communicating?””
“Because they were trying to find Amara.””
“Why?””
“Because she disappeared.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Amara left.””
“When?””
“Two months ago.””
I stared ahead.
“And nobody told me?””
Brielle gave me a sad look.
“See?””
“What?””
“You’re angry because you weren’t told.””
“Yes.””
“Now you understand how I felt.””
The words hurt because they were true.
I looked at my daughter.
“I’m sorry.””
She sighed.
“But Dad…”
“What?””
“There’s something else.””
I waited.
She pulled out her phone.
She showed me a screenshot.
A conversation.
Between her and Amara.
The first message was from Amara.
I think our families are connected by something bigger than either of them knows.
I read the next line.
Your dad needs to know the truth before Marcus finds out.
I looked at Brielle.
“What truth?””
She swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not possible.””
“It is.””
She took the phone back.
“Because Amara never got to tell me.””
“Why?””
Brielle looked at the date.
“Because she disappeared the next day.””
The world suddenly felt smaller.
Another missing piece.
Another person.
Another secret.
I started the car.
“Where are we going?””
Brielle looked confused.
“Dad?””
“We’re finding Amara.””
“You don’t even know where she is.””
I looked at her.
“Yes, I do.””
“How?””
I held up the flash drive.
“Because your mother and Marcus left clues.””
The next morning, I returned home.
Elena was waiting.
She looked like she hadn’t slept.
“Daniel.””
I placed the flash drive on the table.
Her face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“Brielle.””
Fear crossed her face.
“What did she find?””
I stared at my wife.
“The truth.””
She sat down.
“Daniel…”
“No more secrets.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I agree.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked toward the window.
“There is something you don’t know about Amara.””
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“She wasn’t the only child Marcus lost.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Elena looked at me.
May you like
And the next words made my entire body go cold.
“Daniel, Marcus and I didn’t only have one child.””
