Chapter 12: The Evidence Damon Destroyed

I left Dr. Ellis’s office with one thought repeating in my mind.

Safe from Damon.

Not safe from the truth.

Not safe from heartbreak.

Safe from him.

Those words changed everything.

I drove back to the hotel instead of confronting Damon.

For once, I wanted to think before reacting.

I wanted facts.

Not emotions.

Not apologies.

Not another confession.

I called Maya.

She answered immediately.

“Camille.””

“Tell me why.””

Silence.

“Why did you write that I needed to be safe from Damon?””

Maya started crying.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

“Then how did you want me to find out?””

She had no answer.

“Maya.””

Her voice shook.

“There were things Rachel discovered that scared me.””

“What things?””

“I don’t know everything.””

“You knew enough to hide it.””

“Because I was afraid.””

I closed my eyes.

Another person afraid.

Another person making choices for me.

“What did Rachel find?””

Maya whispered:

“Proof that Damon knew more than he admitted.””

“I already know that.””

“No.””

Her voice became serious.

“You don’t.””

I froze.

“What are you saying?””

“I think Damon knew exactly how much danger he was putting you in.””

The words were different.

They landed differently.

Because there was a difference between hiding something because you were scared…

and hiding something because you calculated the risk.

“Where is Rachel’s evidence?””

“I don’t know.””

“Maya.””

“I swear.””

She sounded desperate.

“I only saw part of it.””

“What part?””

“A recording.””

“What recording?””

“One where Damon admitted he was warned.””

My heart raced.

“Warned about what?””

“That he could infect you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

I sat down.

The room felt unreal.

“He knew.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Maya’s voice broke.

“Because Rachel confronted him.””

I looked at the wall.

Four years.

Four years of believing he didn’t know.

But maybe he did.

Maybe he knew exactly what he was risking.

I hung up.

I didn’t cry.

Not yet.

I was too empty.

When I returned home, Damon was waiting.

He stood as soon as he saw me.

“Camille.””

I walked past him.

“Where is it?””

He stopped.

“Where is what?””

“The recording.””

His face changed.

That tiny reaction.

That tiny moment.

Confirmed everything.

“You know what I’m talking about.””

He sat down slowly.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find that.””

I turned around.

“You were hoping?””

His voice cracked.

“Camille…”

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“No more.””

He looked broken.

“I made mistakes.””

“Stop calling them mistakes.””

My voice shook.

“You made decisions.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

“Did Rachel record you?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know before we married?””

“Yes.””

The honesty came too easily now.

Like he was finally exhausted from lying.

“What did you say in the recording?””

He closed his eyes.

“I said I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

I stared.

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I know it sounds selfish.””

“It is.””

“Yes.””

I waited.

“Where is the recording?””

His silence returned.

Then:

“I destroyed it.””

My heart sank.

“You destroyed evidence.””

“I panicked.””

“You destroyed the one thing that could prove the truth.””

“I thought if you heard it, you would hate me.””

I looked at him.

“Damon.””

My voice became quiet.

“You didn’t destroy it because you were afraid I would hate you.””

He looked up.

“You destroyed it because you knew I would finally see you clearly.””

He started crying.

And for the first time, I didn’t feel sorry.

I felt tired.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Lauren.

One attachment.

One sentence.

“Rachel made a backup before Damon found the original.””

I opened it.

A video file.

My hands shook.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Damon and Rachel.

Older.

Before our wedding.

Rachel looked angry.

“You need to tell her.””

Damon’s voice came next.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if she knows everything, she’ll leave.””

Rachel stared at him.

“And if she doesn’t know?””

Silence.

Then Damon said:

“Then maybe I can keep her.””

The video stopped.

I stared at the frozen screen.

Not because he lied.

I already knew he lied.

Because I finally heard the truth.

He wasn’t protecting our marriage.

He was protecting his place in it.

Then another message appeared.

From Lauren.

“Camille, there is one more part of the recording.””

I opened it.

Her final message said:

“Rachel didn’t just record Damon.””

“She recorded the person who helped him hide everything.””

I looked at the screen.

A second video was loading.

May you like

And the name attached to it was:

“Maya Carter.””
