Chapter 4: The Truth Hidden In My Medical File
The message from Dr. Ellis stayed on my screen for several minutes.
“Camille, there is something Damon never told you about the day you were tested.””
I read it again.
And again.
Each time, the words felt heavier.
I looked at Damon.
His face had lost all color.
“Tell me,” I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
That was when I knew.
Whatever this was, he had been carrying it for a long time.
“Damon.””
He rubbed his hands together, the same nervous habit I had seen in the doctor’s office.
“I didn’t know how to explain it.””
I almost smiled.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was tired of hearing the same excuse.
“You always know how to explain things after I find out.””
His eyes dropped.
“Camille…”
“No. I want the truth before someone else has to hand it to me.””
The room was silent.
Outside, a car passed by.
A neighbor laughed somewhere down the street.
Normal sounds.
A normal world.
A world where my marriage was falling apart quietly inside four walls.
Finally, Damon sat down.
“The day you got tested…”
I waited.
He swallowed.
“I already knew you might have been exposed.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
He looked up.
“I suspected.””
The word hit me harder than I expected.
Suspected.
Not knew.
Not confirmed.
But enough to worry.
Enough to act.
Enough to tell me.
“You suspected I was exposed,” I repeated.
“Yes.””
“And you still waited?””
“I wanted to be sure.””
I stared at him.
“Sure?””
My voice rose.
“Sure of what? That I had it before you admitted the truth?””
He flinched.
“I was scared.””
I grabbed the folder from the table.
“You keep saying that like fear makes your choices disappear.””
“I thought if I told you too early, you would panic.””
“Panic?””
I held up the papers.
“You mean I would have reacted like someone whose husband hid a serious truth from her?””
He had no answer.
Because there was no good answer.
I walked to the kitchen, needing space.
The walls felt smaller every second.
“How long have you known?””
“About the possibility?””
“Yes.””
He looked down.
“Six months.””
I froze.
Six months.
For six months, I had cooked dinner beside him.
I had kissed him goodbye before work.
I had slept next to him.
And he had carried that knowledge.
“You knew for six months?””
“Camille, I didn’t know for certain.””
“But you knew enough to worry.””
His silence confirmed it.
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
Six months.
Six months of him watching me live normally while he waited.
I looked at my wedding ring.
The diamond suddenly felt like a question instead of a promise.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Dr. Ellis.
I opened it.
“Camille, I understand if you do not want to speak with me, but I need to clarify something. Damon was instructed to disclose everything before your marriage. He was also instructed to encourage you to get tested immediately after he learned of possible exposure.””
I looked at Damon.
“You were instructed.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The anger inside me became strangely quiet.
Not gone.
Just sharper.
“You had medical advice.””
“Yes.””
“You had time.””
“Yes.””
“You had a choice.””
His voice cracked.
“Yes.””
“And you chose yourself.””
His eyes filled.
“I thought I was protecting us.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
The words stayed between us.
Because they were true.
A few hours later, I met Dr. Ellis at her office.
I almost canceled twice.
Part of me wanted nothing to do with anyone connected to Damon’s secrets.
But another part of me needed answers.
Dr. Ellis greeted me with a sad expression.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
I sat across from her.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“I knew Damon had been diagnosed before your relationship became serious.””
“Did you know about Vanessa?””
Her expression changed slightly.
“No.””
I watched her carefully.
“But you knew he was hiding something.””
“Yes.””
My hands tightened around my purse.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“I could not disclose his private medical information without his permission.””
I understood.
But understanding did not make it hurt less.
“So you watched me marry him.””
“I advised him not to proceed without telling you.””
“And he ignored you.””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Then Dr. Ellis opened a file.
“There is one more thing.””
Of course there was.
I almost laughed.
“One more secret?””
She looked at me.
“One more piece of information.””
She turned the file toward me.
“This was your original test request.””
I looked down.
The paperwork showed something I hadn’t noticed before.
A date.
A date from six months earlier.
My eyes narrowed.
“Why is this dated before my symptoms?””
Dr. Ellis hesitated.
“Because Damon requested that you be tested.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He contacted the clinic anonymously at first.””
My heart started racing.
“He requested my test?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Dr. Ellis folded her hands.
“He was worried.””
I stared at the paper.
For the first time, the story became more complicated.
Damon had lied.
He had betrayed me.
But he had also been afraid.
Afraid enough to secretly arrange my test.
Afraid enough to know something was wrong.
I hated that it confused me.
I wanted him to be only a villain.
It would have been easier.
Dr. Ellis continued.
“But there is something I don’t understand.””
“What?””
She looked at the paperwork.
“Damon requested your test because he believed Vanessa may have exposed him again.””
I went still.
“Again?””
Dr. Ellis looked at me.
“That means he knew Vanessa was still involved.””
My heart sank.
Because Damon had told me Vanessa was in the past.
A mistake.
Something finished.
But Dr. Ellis had just said something different.
She had said:
Still involved.
I stood up slowly.
“Thank you for telling me.””
Outside the clinic, I called Damon.
He answered immediately.
“Camille?””
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“Don’t leave.””
A pause.
“Why?””
I looked at the clinic behind me.
“Because I have another question.””
His voice became nervous.
“What question?””
I gripped my phone.
“The question you should have answered six months ago.””
Silence.
Then I asked:
“Were you still seeing Vanessa while you were married to me?””
The line went quiet.
Too quiet.
May you like
And then Damon whispered:
“I need to explain.””
