Chapter 9: The Recording That Exposed Him
I watched the video again.
Then again.
Each time, the same impossible truth stared back at me.
Rachel was alive.
Not in the past.
Not in an old memory.
Alive.
Speaking.
Warning Damon about me.
I looked at Lauren.
“How long have you had this?””
She looked down.
“Two years.””
My anger rose.
“Two years?””
“I didn’t know what to do.””
“You could have told me.””
“I didn’t know who you were.””
I stood.
“But you knew Damon.””
Lauren nodded.
“That’s why I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at the frozen video.
“Of what he would do if he knew Rachel’s evidence survived.””
The word hit me.
Evidence.
Not memory.
Not a message.
Evidence.
I sat back down.
“What evidence?””
Lauren opened her purse again.
This time, she pulled out a small drive.
“Rachel collected everything.””
My eyes stayed on it.
“What is everything?””
“Messages. Medical records. Conversations.””
“With who?””
Lauren hesitated.
“Everyone.””
My heart pounded.
“Damon?””
“Yes.””
“Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“Me?””
Lauren looked away.
I noticed.
“What?””
She didn’t answer.
“Lauren.””
She sighed.
“Rachel knew about you before Damon proposed.””
I felt numb.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She was still investigating Damon.””
I stared at the table.
My entire relationship had been happening while someone else knew more about it than I did.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Lauren’s eyes softened.
“Because she wanted proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Damon wasn’t just a man who made mistakes.””
I looked at her.
“What was he?””
Lauren whispered:
“A man who built his entire life around avoiding consequences.””
I hated how much that sounded true.
I left the coffee shop with the drive.
I should have gone home.
I should have confronted Damon immediately.
But something stopped me.
A small voice inside told me:
Don’t let him control the next truth.
For once, I wanted to know everything before he had a chance to explain.
I opened the files on my laptop.
The first folder was labeled:
“Camille.””
My stomach dropped.
Inside were documents.
Messages.
Notes.
Photos.
Rachel had been tracking Damon’s behavior.
Not because she hated him.
Because she believed someone else would eventually get hurt.
Then I found the first message.
From Damon.
To Rachel.
The date was three months before my wedding.
I opened it.
Rachel,
I’m getting married.
I froze.
The message continued.
She doesn’t know everything.
I need you to stay quiet.
My heart sank.
There it was.
The proof.
Not suspicion.
Not confusion.
Proof.
Damon had told Rachel he was marrying me while admitting I didn’t know the truth.
I kept reading.
Rachel had replied:
You cannot build a marriage on a secret someone else has to carry.
Damon responded:
I love her.
Rachel:
Then tell her.
I closed my eyes.
The same conversation.
The same choice.
Again and again.
Damon always had a moment where he could choose honesty.
And every time…
He chose silence.
I heard the front door open.
Damon.
I closed the laptop.
He walked into the room.
“Camille?””
I looked at him.
“Where have you been?””
The question was strange.
Because he sounded worried.
Not angry.
Like he had been afraid I would disappear.
“I found Rachel’s letter.””
His face changed.
I watched the fear return.
“What letter?””
“Don’t lie.””
He stopped.
“Camille…”
“I know.””
He looked confused.
“I know you saw Rachel after she was supposedly gone.””
His expression collapsed.
“Who told you?””
“That’s your first question?””
He looked away.
I stood.
“You met her after we were together.””
“I can explain.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to start there.””
He went quiet.
“Did you know she was investigating you?””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You did.””
He sat down.
“Camille, please.””
“Did you know?””
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But devastating.
“Why?””
He covered his face.
“Because Rachel knew something.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
Something in his eyes made me afraid.
“She knew the diagnosis wasn’t the only thing I had been hiding.””
My heart stopped.
“What else?””
He didn’t answer.
“Damon.””
His voice cracked.
“The night I got diagnosed…”
I waited.
“The night Rachel found out…”
He swallowed.
“I wasn’t with Vanessa.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“I lied about that too.””
The room went silent.
“Then who were you with?””
Damon looked at me.
And whispered a name.
A name that made my blood run cold.
“Your sister.””
I froze.
“My sister?””
He nodded slowly.
And before I could speak, my phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
Maya.
My sister.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Camille…”
I stood.
“What happened?””
A long pause.
Then:
“There’s something Damon never told you about me.””
I looked at Damon.
He closed his eyes.
May you like
Because he knew.
The secret was finally coming out.
