Chapter 2: The Message I Was Never Supposed To See
I didn’t sleep that night.
I lay in the darkness of our bedroom, staring at the ceiling while Damon slept on the couch downstairs.
Or pretended to sleep.
I couldn’t tell anymore.
That was the worst part.
When someone breaks your trust, you start questioning everything.
Every memory.
Every conversation.
Every moment you once considered safe.
At 2:13 in the morning, I finally got out of bed.
The house was quiet.
Our house.
The one we picked together.
The one where we painted the walls, planted flowers outside, and promised each other we would grow old.
I walked into the kitchen and saw the coffee mug Damon always used sitting beside the sink.
A normal thing.
A painful thing.
I grabbed the tablet from the counter because I wanted to distract myself.
I wanted pictures.
Something harmless.
Something that reminded me our marriage wasn’t only a lie.
Then I saw the notification.
A message preview.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But the name stopped me.
“Vanessa.””
I didn’t know any Vanessa.
My finger hovered over the screen.
I knew opening it would change something.
Maybe everything.
But the truth had already found me once that day.
I couldn’t pretend I didn’t want to know the rest.
I opened the message.
Vanessa had written:
“I can’t believe you told your wife about the diagnosis.””
My heart started pounding.
Another message appeared underneath.
“You promised me she would never find out about us.””
I stopped breathing.
Us.
That word.
One word.
One explosion.
I scrolled.
The conversation was longer than I expected.
Months longer.
My hands shook as I read.
Vanessa wasn’t a stranger.
She was someone Damon had worked with.
Someone he had known before our marriage.
Someone who knew about his condition.
Someone who knew about me.
I heard footsteps behind me.
“Camille?””
I turned around.
Damon stood in the doorway.
His face changed the moment he saw the tablet in my hands.
He didn’t ask what I was reading.
He already knew.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.””
The sentence hurt more than if he had screamed.
I slowly stood.
“What exactly wasn’t I supposed to see?””
“Camille…”
“No.””
I held up the tablet.
“Who is Vanessa?””
His silence answered before his mouth did.
“A coworker,” he said finally.
I stared at him.
“That’s your answer?””
“It’s complicated.””
I laughed bitterly.
“No. It’s actually very simple.””
I walked closer.
“Did you sleep with her?””
Damon looked away.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
“Damon.””
His voice dropped.
“Yes.””
The room felt smaller.
I gripped the edge of the counter.
“When?””
He ran his hand over his face.
“Before we got married.””
I waited.
Because some part of me needed him to say that.
Needed the timeline.
Needed something.
Then he continued.
“And after.””
The second answer destroyed the tiny piece of hope I had left.
“After?””
He stepped forward.
“Camille, please listen.””
I moved back.
“No.””
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
My voice rose.
“You didn’t forget to buy milk.””
I pointed at the tablet.
“You made choices.””
He looked ashamed.
But shame was arriving years too late.
“You knew about this diagnosis before our wedding,” I said.
“You knew after. You knew you were putting my health at risk.””
“I was scared.””
I stared at him.
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“So you lied because you loved me?””
He had no response.
That silence was the answer.
The next morning, I went to my sister’s apartment.
I didn’t tell her everything.
Not yet.
I wasn’t ready to say the words out loud.
Because saying them made them real.
My sister Maya noticed immediately.
She always did.
“You look like you haven’t slept.””
I looked down.
“I found out Damon lied to me.””
She sat beside me.
“What kind of lie?””
I opened my mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because how do you explain that your entire marriage suddenly feels like a crime scene?
Maya took my hand.
“Camille, whatever happened, you don’t have to protect him anymore.””
That sentence broke me.
Because I realized I had been protecting him.
From embarrassment.
From consequences.
From people knowing the truth.
Meanwhile, he had not protected me.
Not once.
Later that afternoon, Damon came to Maya’s apartment.
He stood outside the door.
“I need to talk to you.””
I didn’t move.
“You already talked.””
“Camille, please.””
I opened the door but stayed between him and the apartment.
“What do you want?””
He looked exhausted.
“I want a chance to explain.””
“Explain what?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“The reason I never told you everything.””
I felt a chill.
“Everything?””
Damon looked down.
And that was when I knew.
There was another secret.
A bigger one.
“I didn’t tell you because Vanessa wasn’t the only person who knew.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
He looked back at me.
And whispered:
“Someone else knew about my diagnosis before you did.””
I froze.
“Who?””
Damon opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
The color drained from his face.
I saw the name.
And I knew I had never heard it before.

The call was from someone saved as:
“Dr. Ellis.””
