Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed
I didn’t answer Vanessa immediately.
I couldn’t.
My mind was trying to process too many versions of Damon at once.
The husband I loved.
The man who lied.
The man who cheated.
The man who was afraid.
And now…
The man who had another secret from the night everything changed.
“What happened that night?”” I asked.
Damon stood up.
“Camille, don’t listen to her.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
That was enough.
Vanessa heard him.
“He never told you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Tell me.””
“Camille…”
“Tell me.””
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“The night Damon was diagnosed, he wasn’t alone.””
I looked at Damon.
“What does that mean?””
“He was with me.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed the room.
Damon stepped forward.
“I can explain.””
I raised my hand.
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“No more explanations before the truth.””
Vanessa continued.
“That night, Damon told me he was going to leave you.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Damon looked horrified.
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“It is.””
I stared at him.
“You told her that?””
He looked away.
“I was confused.””
“Confused?””
I felt anger rising.
“You were planning to leave me?””
“No.””
“But you told her.””
He didn’t answer.
Vanessa’s voice softened.
“I thought he was choosing me.””
I closed my eyes.
A painful realization hit me.
Damon hadn’t just hidden a diagnosis.
He had hidden a completely different life.
A version of himself I never knew existed.
“Why are you telling me this now?”” I asked Vanessa.
“Because I found out something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Damon wasn’t diagnosed because of me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I thought he blamed me.””
Damon looked at the phone.
“Vanessa…”
“No, Damon. She deserves the truth.””
My heart pounded.
“What truth?””
Vanessa continued.
“The person who exposed Damon wasn’t me.””
Silence.
“Then who was it?””
Neither of them answered.
I looked at Damon.
His face was pale.
“Damon.””
Finally, he whispered:
“I don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“After all these years?””
He shook his head.
“I assumed it was Vanessa.””
My mind raced.
“Then why did you tell me she exposed you?””
“Because that’s what I believed.””
I felt exhausted.
Everyone had been lying.
Everyone had been guessing.
And somehow, I was the only person who had no information about my own life.
The next morning, I requested my complete medical records.
Not through Damon.
Not through anyone else.
I needed answers directly.
I spent hours reading through documents.
Dates.
Notes.
Tests.
Then I found something.
A physician note from the original diagnosis.
One sentence.
One sentence that made my hands go numb.
“Patient reports possible exposure from spouse’s previous partner.””
I stared at the words.
Spouse’s previous partner.
My stomach tightened.
Because at that time…
I wasn’t Damon’s spouse.
I wasn’t even dating him.
I kept reading.
The note continued.
“Patient states he was informed of potential exposure by an unidentified source.””
An unidentified source.
Someone had warned Damon.
Someone knew.
Someone had information before I ever entered the picture.
I called Dr. Ellis.
She answered quickly.
“Camille?””
“I found something in Damon’s records.””
A pause.
“What did you find?””
I read the note.
Her silence worried me.
“Dr. Ellis?””
Finally, she spoke.
“There is something I never understood about Damon’s case.””
“What?””
“The person who contacted him before his diagnosis…”
She stopped.
“Who?””
Her voice lowered.
“Was a woman.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Did you know who?””
“No.””
I looked at the papers.
A name was written in the margin.
A name I had never seen before.
I whispered it.
“Rachel.””
Dr. Ellis went silent.
Then she said:
“Camille…”
“What?””
“That name changes everything.””
I sat frozen.
“Why?””
Because Dr. Ellis sounded afraid.
“Because Rachel was the person who referred Damon to my clinic.””
I looked at the paper again.
A stranger’s name.
A hidden connection.
A missing piece.
Then Dr. Ellis said something that made my blood run cold.
“Camille, Rachel wasn’t Damon’s ex-girlfriend.””
I swallowed.
“Then who was she?””
A long pause.
May you like
Then:
“She was your husband’s first wife.””
