Chapter 11: The Recording Anna Left Behind
Nobody wanted to press play.
That was the strange thing.
After everything we had discovered, after all the hidden rooms and missing people and lies…
A tiny recorder scared everyone more than anything else.
Because this was different.
This wasn’t a secret someone forgot.
This was something Anna wanted found.
At the right time.
By the right person.
Detective Harris looked at my father.
“Do you know what’s on this?””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
My mother looked at the recorder.
“I knew she was hiding something.””
Grandma turned.
“You knew?””
My mother looked ashamed.
“She gave me the note years ago.””
Everyone stared.
“Years ago?””
My mother nodded.
“She told me if anything happened, I had to wait until she was ready.””
Detective Harris frowned.
“Ready for what?””
My mother looked at me.
“For her daughter to know the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Detective Harris inserted the batteries.
A small red light appeared.
Then a woman’s voice filled the room.
Anna.
My real mother.
“If you’re hearing this, then Robert found the house.””
My father closed his eyes.
Anna continued.
“I’m sorry.””
A pause.
“I’m sorry you grew up surrounded by secrets.””
My eyes filled with tears.
I didn’t know her.
But hearing her voice felt impossible.
Like a missing piece of myself had suddenly appeared.
Anna continued.
“I need you to know something.””
The recording crackled.
“You were never the reason people suffered.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“You were the reason people survived.””
Everyone looked at the recorder.
“Robert believed fear made people weak.””
Anna’s voice became stronger.
“But he was wrong.””
A pause.
“Love makes people dangerous.””
My father looked down.
Because he knew what she meant.
Anna continued.
“The night I escaped, I wasn’t alone.””
Emily’s name immediately came to everyone’s mind.
“Emily helped me.””
My father looked shocked.
“She was just a child.””
“Yes.””
Anna’s voice softened.
“But she was braver than all of us.””
Detective Harris listened carefully.
“She hid the evidence.””
My father whispered.
“Where?””
The recording continued.
“Robert searched everywhere.””
A pause.
“But he never understood one thing.””
Anna took a breath.
“He thought the evidence was valuable because it could destroy him.””
The room became silent.
“But I knew it was valuable because it could save her.””
Everyone looked at me.
“The recording contains Robert’s confession.””
Detective Harris leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
Anna continued.
“Not where you think.””
My father frowned.
“He will look for objects.””
A pause.
“But he won’t look for memories.””
The recording stopped.
Everyone froze.
Then it continued.
A different voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
Robert.
My father stepped back.
“No.””
Robert’s voice was calm.
Cold.
“I always knew someone would betray me.””
The recording played his words.
“I just didn’t know which one.””
My father’s face changed.
Because Robert wasn’t speaking to Anna.
He was speaking to him.
“You wanted to be the hero, Michael.””
A pause.
“But heroes are only useful when people remember them.””
Detective Harris looked at the recorder.
Then at my father.
Robert continued:
“You took my family.””
My father whispered:
“No…”
“You raised my child.””
The room went silent.
My mother grabbed the table.
Robert’s voice became darker.
“And you never once asked why Anna chose you.””
The recording ended.
Everyone stared at my father.
Detective Harris spoke first.
“What does he mean?””
My father looked lost.
“I don’t know.””
Lily stepped forward.
“Yes, you do.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at the recorder.
“Anna didn’t choose Michael randomly.””
My father shook his head.
“She trusted me.””
“No.””
Lily’s voice softened.
“She knew something.””
“What?””
Lily looked at me.
“She knew who your father really was.””
The room froze.
My father stared.
“What?””
Lily’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Michael…”
She took a breath.
“Anna didn’t bring the baby to you because you were safe.””
A pause.
“She brought the baby to you because you were family.””
Nobody moved.
My father whispered:
“No.””
Lily looked at him.
“She was your daughter.””
The room disappeared.
At least that’s what it felt like.
Because suddenly every secret had a new meaning.
Every lie.
Every hidden room.
Every missing document.
My father sat down.
“No…”
Detective Harris looked at him.
“Michael, is there something you need to tell us?””
My father couldn’t speak.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
An officer stood there.
His face was pale.
“Detective…”
Harris looked up.
“What?””
The officer swallowed.
“We found someone outside.””
My father stood.
“Who?””
The officer looked toward the driveway.
“A woman.””
May you like
My father froze.
“She says her name is Anna Carter.””
