Chapter 8: The Truth About Michael
My father’s confession changed the room.
Not because we understood it.
Because we didn’t.
A child knows when someone is guilty.
Not because they understand the crime.
Because they understand the silence afterward.
And my father’s silence was the loudest thing in the house.
Detective Harris looked at him.
“Explain.””
My father sat down.
His hands were shaking.
“I didn’t hurt Anna.””
Lily immediately said:
“But you helped hide what happened.””
My father looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
And I saw tears in his eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
Grandma’s voice was cold.
“Afraid of what?””
My father swallowed.
“Of becoming like him.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“My father controlled everyone around him. He lied. He threatened people. He destroyed lives.””
He looked toward the hidden room.
“When I found Anna and the baby, I wanted to save them.””
“Then why did you lie?”” Detective Harris asked.
My father closed his eyes.
“Because Robert gave me a choice.””
The room became silent.
“He told me if I went to the police, he would make sure Anna disappeared forever.””
Lily shook her head.
“He already did that.””
My father nodded.
“I know.””
Detective Harris looked frustrated.
“Then what did you do?””
“I made a deal.””
Grandma stared.
“A deal with a monster?””
My father’s voice broke.
“I thought I could control him.””
Lily laughed bitterly.
“You thought you could control Robert Carter?””
My father looked down.
“I was seventeen.””
“And Anna was nineteen.””
The guilt on his face said everything.
Detective Harris looked at the files.
“So Robert stayed hidden.””
My father nodded.
“He disappeared.””
“Until five years ago.””
“Yes.””
The detective picked up the tape.
“Why did he come back?””
My father looked at me.
“Because of her.””
My mother moved closer.
“Michael…”
“No more lies.””
He stood.
“Robert believed she was the last piece of evidence against him.””
Detective Harris frowned.
“How?””
My father walked to the old documents.
“He kept records of everything.””
He opened a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Names.
Dates.
And one page with a title.
*Project Family.*
My stomach turned.
Detective Harris read it.
“What is this?””
My father looked sick.
“My father’s plan.””
“For what?””
My father whispered:
“To create the perfect family.””
Nobody understood.
Until Lily spoke.
“He didn’t see us as people.””
She looked at me.
“He saw us as things he owned.””
Detective Harris turned the page.
There was a list.
Names.
Relationships.
Dates.
At the bottom was my name.
Next to it was one sentence.
*Final replacement.*
My mother screamed.
“No.””
She grabbed the paper.
“No, no, no…”
Detective Harris took it from her.
“Rachel.””
She looked at him.
“I knew he was dangerous.””
Everyone stared.
My father turned.
“What?””
My mother began crying.
“I knew more than I told you.””
The room went silent again.
Grandma looked furious.
“What do you mean?””
My mother wiped her face.
“After we took her in, I found letters.””
“From who?”” Detective Harris asked.
She whispered:
“Anna.””
My father froze.
“You knew?””
My mother nodded.
“I knew she was alive.””
The words destroyed whatever trust remained.
My father stepped back.
“You lied to me?””
She cried.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“By hiding her mother?””
“I was afraid!””
The argument exploded.
For years of secrets.
Years of fear.
Years of pretending.
Then Lily interrupted.
“She didn’t hide Anna.””
Everyone looked at her.
“She protected Anna.””
Detective Harris frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Lily looked toward the window.
“Because Robert wasn’t the only one searching.””
A shadow moved outside.
Everyone froze.
The officers immediately reached for their weapons.
Detective Harris whispered:
“Everyone away from the windows.””
The figure outside disappeared.
My father looked terrified.
“He found us.””
Detective Harris checked the cameras.
Then stopped.
“What?””
He stared at the screen.
A man was standing in the backyard.
An old man.
White hair.
A long coat.
Watching the house.
My father whispered his name.
“Robert.””
The man looked directly into the camera.
Then slowly smiled.

And the security system displayed one message.
*WELCOME HOME.*
