Chapter 9: The Visitor At Midnight

The police surrounded the house within minutes.

But Robert Carter was gone.

No footprints.

No broken fence.

No sign that anyone had been there.

Except one thing.

The message on the security system remained.

WELCOME HOME.

Detective Harris stared at the screen.

“He wanted us to know he was here.””

My father stood near the window.

“He always liked games.””

Lily looked at him.

“You knew him better than anyone.””

My father didn’t answer.

Grandma stepped forward.

“And you still let him near this family.””

My father looked down.

“I was trying to keep him away.””

“No.””

Her voice was sharp.

“You were trying to manage a nightmare.””

My father accepted the words.

Because there was nothing else he could say.

That night, nobody slept.

The house was filled with police officers.

But somehow, it didn’t feel safer.

Because the person outside wasn’t trying to break in.

He wanted us to know he could.

Around midnight, Detective Harris found something strange.

The hidden camera in the basement had recorded movement.

Someone had entered the hidden room.

The detective called everyone over.

The footage played.

A man walked down the stairs.

Slowly.

Confidently.

He knew the house.

He knew every corner.

Then he turned toward the camera.

Robert Carter smiled.

And said:

“Michael.””

My father stepped closer.

The recording continued.

“You should have listened.””

Then Robert looked directly into the camera.

“I told you she would bring the truth back.””

Everyone looked at Lily.

But Robert wasn’t talking about her.

He was talking about me.

The recording ended.

Detective Harris looked at my father.

“What did he mean?””

My father didn’t answer.

Lily did.

“Anna wasn’t protecting the child from Robert.””

Everyone turned.

“She was protecting Robert from the child.””

The words made no sense.

Until my father opened the old folder again.

Inside was a photograph.

A baby.

And another person standing beside her.

My father looked at it.

His face collapsed.

“No.””

Detective Harris grabbed the photo.

“Who is that?””

My father whispered:

“My sister.””

Lily stepped closer.

“What?””

My father stared at the picture.

“That’s my sister Emily.””

Grandma looked confused.

“But you said Daniel was your brother.””

My father nodded.

“I had two siblings.””

Detective Harris looked at the files.

“And Emily?””

My father’s hands trembled.

“She disappeared too.””

Silence.

Then Lily whispered:

“Robert took everyone.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“He didn’t take everyone.””

A tear fell down his face.

“He was looking for one person.””

Detective Harris looked at the photograph again.

Then at me.

“Why?””

My father answered.

“Because she saw something.””

The room went still.

“What did she see?”” Detective Harris asked.

My father looked toward the darkness outside.

“The night Anna escaped.””

He swallowed.

“She saw who helped her.””

Lily stared.

“Who?””

My father looked at the photo.

Then at me.

And said:

“My daughter.””

Everyone froze.

Because he wasn’t talking about me.

He was talking about someone else.

Someone who had been missing for thirty years.

Emily.

Detective Harris immediately stood.

“Where is she?””

My father shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then his phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, he answered.

A voice came through.

A woman’s voice.

Old.

Weak.

Terrified.

“Michael…”

My father almost dropped the phone.

“Emily?””

The voice cried.

“I found her.””

My father froze.

“Found who?””

A long pause.

Then the woman whispered:

“The girl.””

Everyone looked at me.

The voice continued:

“She knows what Robert did.””

My father’s face turned pale.

May you like

Then came the final words.

“She knows why he wanted your daughter dead.””
