Chapter 13: The Brother Who Was Buried Twice
The paper in Detective Harris’s hand shook slightly.
Not because it was old.
Not because it was fragile.
Because of the name written on it.
Daniel Carter.
My father’s brother.
The same man whose name had been hidden beneath Grandma’s floor.
The same man everyone believed was gone.
My father stared at the document like the ink itself had betrayed him.
“No.””
Anna looked at him sadly.
“Yes.””
He shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel’s name sat there.
Not as a missing person.
Not as a victim.
But as someone connected to me.
Detective Harris read carefully.
“This document says Daniel Carter was listed as the child’s biological father.””
Nobody spoke.
The entire room seemed to stop.
My mother looked at Anna.
“What does that mean?””
Anna took a deep breath.
“It means Robert was never the father.””
My father stepped back.
“Then why did he chase her?””
Anna looked at me.
“Because Robert believed Daniel’s bloodline gave him a claim.””
Detective Harris frowned.
“Claim?””
Anna nodded.
“Robert didn’t see people as family. He saw them as possessions.””
She looked at the document.
“When Daniel discovered what Robert was doing, he tried to expose him.””
Lily whispered:
“That’s why Robert locked him away.””
Anna nodded.
“But Daniel escaped.””
My father looked shocked.
“He escaped?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Anna looked at him.
“The night you found the baby.””
The room went silent.
My father’s face changed.
“I found her outside the church.””
Anna nodded.
“Because Daniel brought her there.””
My father covered his mouth.
“No.””
“He knew he was running out of time.””
Anna’s eyes filled with tears.
“He knew Robert would find him.””
Detective Harris looked at the documents.
“So Daniel gave the baby to Michael?””
“Yes.””
“Why Michael?””
Anna looked at my father.
“Because Daniel trusted him.””
My father shook his head.
“But I barely knew him.””
Anna smiled sadly.
“You knew him better than you think.””
She reached into her coat and pulled out another photograph.
A younger version of my father stood beside Daniel.
Both boys were smiling.
My father stared.
“I’ve never seen this.””
Anna looked at him.
“Because Robert destroyed everything connected to Daniel.””
My father touched the photograph.
His hands trembled.
“I thought he hated me.””
Anna shook her head.
“He loved you.””
The words broke him.
For years, my father had carried the belief that his brother had abandoned him.
But the truth was worse.
Daniel hadn’t abandoned him.
He had sacrificed himself.
Detective Harris looked toward the hidden room.
“What happened after Daniel escaped?””
Anna’s expression changed.
“He didn’t escape completely.””
Lily closed her eyes.
“He was caught.””
My father looked at her.
“You knew?””
Lily nodded.
“I saw him.””
Everyone turned.
She continued.
“After I escaped the first room, I found Daniel.””
My father whispered:
“Where?””
“Still inside the house.””
A chill moved through the room.
“Robert had moved him.””
Detective Harris looked at the basement.
“Another room?””
Anna nodded.
“The final room.””
Everyone froze.
Grandma looked exhausted.
“How many secrets did this house hold?””
Anna looked around.
“More than anyone should ever have to carry.””
Detective Harris immediately ordered another search.
Minutes later, officers found a hidden compartment behind the old foundation.
Inside was a small wooden box.
Not metal.
Not locked.
Just sitting there.
Waiting.
Detective Harris opened it.
Inside were letters.
Dozens of them.
All written by Daniel.
My father took the first one.
His hands shook as he read.
“Michael…”
His voice broke.
Grandma looked at him.
“What does it say?””
My father couldn’t answer.
Anna quietly said:
“Read it.””
He swallowed.
Then he began.
“Michael, if you found this, then I failed.””
He stopped.
A tear fell.
“But if you are reading this, it means you kept her safe.””
My father closed his eyes.
The room was silent.
“He knew.””
My father looked at Anna.
“He knew I had her?””
Anna nodded.
“Daniel trusted you.””
My father continued reading.
“I know Robert will tell you that I betrayed him. He will say I stole something from him. He will say I ruined this family.””
My father’s voice shook.
“But the truth is, Robert destroyed this family long before I tried to save it.””
Detective Harris looked at the letters.
“He documented everything.””
Anna nodded.
“Daniel spent years collecting proof.””
My father turned the page.
Then suddenly stopped.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
His face had gone pale.
“What does it say?”” Grandma asked.
My father handed the letter to Detective Harris.
The detective read silently.
Then looked up.
“Michael…”
“What?””
The detective hesitated.
“Daniel knew Robert would come back.””
Anna nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked at me.
“Because Daniel knew Robert would never stop searching for his heir.””
My father looked confused.
“Heir?””
Anna nodded.
“Not yours.””
She looked at me.
“His.””
The room became cold.
Detective Harris looked at the documents again.
Then slowly understood.
“Daniel wasn’t just protecting the child.””
Anna nodded.
“He was protecting the truth about who should inherit everything Robert built.””
My father stared.
“What did Robert build?””
Anna answered:
“An empire.””
Nobody moved.
“And if Robert found her…”
Anna looked at me.
“He would use her to take it back.””
Detective Harris closed the file.
“Then this was never about revenge.””
Anna shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“It was about control.””
Then the lights went out.
Again.
But this time, nobody panicked.
Because everyone knew.
Someone was inside.
A voice came from the hallway.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
“You all spent so much time looking for the truth.””
Robert Carter stepped into the doorway.
“And you never realized…”
May you like
He smiled.
“The truth was looking for me.””
