Chapter 14: The Last Secret
Nobody moved.
Robert Carter stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like the house had always been his.
And maybe that was the most frightening part.
He wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t afraid.
He looked comfortable.
Detective Harris immediately stepped forward.
“Robert Carter, don’t move.””
Robert smiled.
“Still giving orders?””
The detective raised his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.””
Robert slowly lifted his hands.
But his eyes never left my father.
“Michael.””
My father stared.
“You’re alive.””
Robert laughed softly.
“Disappointed?””
“No.””
My father’s voice shook.
“I’m trying to understand.””
Robert looked around the room.
“At last.””
He smiled.
“The whole family together.””
Lily stepped forward.
“You don’t get to call us family.””
Robert looked at her.
“Still angry.””
She stared back.
“Still evil.””
For the first time, Robert’s smile faded.
Detective Harris noticed.
“You know each other well.””
Robert looked at Lily.
“She was always difficult.””
Lily’s expression hardened.
“She was always watching.””
The words made Robert’s face change.
Because he knew.
Lily wasn’t afraid anymore.
Detective Harris moved closer.
“You’re under arrest.””
Robert laughed.
“For what?””
The detective pointed toward the files.
“For everything.””
Robert looked at the evidence.
Then smiled.
“You think those papers matter?””
Anna stepped forward.
“They do.””
Robert looked at her.
And for a moment, something strange appeared on his face.
Not anger.
Fear.
“You.””
Anna nodded.
“You thought I was gone.””
“I thought you were smart.””
“I was.””
She looked at me.
“I was just waiting.””
Robert looked at me.
Then his expression changed.
“You look just like her.””
I stepped closer to Grandma.
Robert noticed.
“You don’t know who you are, do you?””
Detective Harris interrupted.
“Enough.””
But Robert continued.
“You spent your whole life believing Michael saved you.””
He looked at my father.
“But he didn’t tell you the truth.””
My father stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Robert smiled.
“He was there when Daniel died.””
The room froze.
My father looked broken.
Anna looked at him.
“Michael?””
Robert continued.
“He watched.””
“No.””
My father shook his head.
“I tried to help him.””
Robert laughed.
“Did you?””
Detective Harris looked at my father.
“What happened?””
My father closed his eyes.
Then finally said:
“Daniel died saving her.””
The room became silent.
“He pushed me away from Robert.””
My father’s voice cracked.
“He told me to run.””
Anna cried silently.
“I thought he was dead.””
My father looked at her.
“He was.””
Robert interrupted.
“And now you know.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You know why Michael spent thirty years hiding.””
My father stared.
“Because I failed.””
“No.””
Robert smiled.
“Because you were guilty.””
My father looked down.
And that was when I understood something.
My father had been protecting me.
But he had also been punishing himself.
Detective Harris moved toward Robert.
“Take him.””
Two officers grabbed him.
But Robert didn’t resist.
Instead, he looked at me.
“You want the truth?””
I didn’t answer.
He smiled.
“Ask your mother why she never told you about the night you were born.””
Everyone froze.
My mother looked terrified.
Anna turned.
“Rachel?””
My mother started crying.
“No.””
Detective Harris looked at her.
“What happened?””
My mother looked at me.
“I was there.””
My father stared.
“What?””
“I was there when Anna gave birth.””
The room went silent.
My mother stepped closer.
“I held you before Michael did.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I knew everything.””
Anna looked hurt.
“Rachel…”
“I was afraid.””
My mother cried.
“I thought if Robert found out, he would kill her.””
Detective Harris looked at Robert.
“And you knew?””
Robert smiled.
“I always knew.””
Everyone turned.
He continued:
“That’s why I never came for the child.””
A pause.
“I came for the person who knew where the final evidence was.””
Everyone looked at Anna.
Then at my mother.
Then at Grandma.
Robert smiled.
“Not the daughter.””
The police dragged him away.
But before he disappeared, he said one final thing.
“Check the church.””
Everyone froze.
“What church?”” Detective Harris asked.
May you like
Robert smiled.
“The one where Daniel left the truth.””
