Chapter 10: The Night Everything Changed

For years, I thought my mother’s death was the moment my life fell apart.

I thought that was the day everything changed.

The day my family disappeared.

The day my father became distant.

The day I learned that people could promise to protect you and still leave you alone.

But standing in that living room, staring at Rachel’s terrified face, I realized something worse.

My life didn’t fall apart because my mother died.

It fell apart because someone had spent years hiding the truth about why.

My dad looked at Rachel.

“Start talking.””

She didn’t move.

The confidence she always carried was gone.

No perfect explanation.

No carefully chosen words.

No way to turn herself into the victim.

Just fear.

“David…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“That’s enough.””

Rachel looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw guilt.

Real guilt.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

I laughed softly.

“Which part?””

She looked confused.

“The part where my mother died?””

Her face fell.

“Emma…”

“Or the part where you spent years making me feel like I was the reason everything was wrong?””

My dad closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

He had watched it happen.

And he had done nothing.

Rachel sat down slowly.

“I need to explain.””

My dad remained standing.

“Then explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“The night of the accident, your mother found out I had been talking to David.””

My stomach tightened.

My dad looked away.

“I was angry,” Rachel continued.

“I was jealous.””

“You were having an affair?”” I asked.

Rachel shook her head quickly.

“No.””

She looked at my dad.

“Not then.””

The way she said it made the room colder.

My dad’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel swallowed.

“It means I had feelings for you before you left your marriage.””

Nobody spoke.

I felt sick.

Not because someone had feelings.

Because someone had built a life around those feelings.

Rachel continued.

“Your mother confronted me.””

“Where?”” my dad asked.

“At my apartment.””

My dad looked shocked.

“You never told me that.””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Rachel’s eyes moved toward me.

“Losing everything.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You were afraid of losing what you wanted.””

The words hit her.

Because she knew they were true.

Rachel looked down.

“Your mother came to my apartment because she wanted answers.””

“What answers?”” I asked.

Rachel hesitated.

Then:

“She wanted to know if I was trying to take her place.””

I felt a pain in my chest.

My mother.

Standing there.

Knowing.

Fighting.

Trying to protect her family.

“And what did you say?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I told her she was paranoid.””

I almost couldn’t breathe.

“You lied.””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Then my dad asked:

“What happened after that?””

Rachel’s hands started shaking.

“She left.””

“That’s it?””

“No.””

She looked terrified.

“She called David.””

My dad froze.

“What?””

“She called you from the car.””

My dad stared at her.

“I never got a call.””

Rachel looked away.

And that was when I understood.

Someone had done something.

My dad understood too.

“Why?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

“Why didn’t I get that call?””

She whispered:

“Because I deleted it.””

Nobody moved.

My dad looked like he had been hit.

“You what?””

“I panicked.””

“You deleted her call?””

“I didn’t know she was going to crash!””

The sentence came out too quickly.

Too defensively.

And everyone heard it.

My dad stepped back.

“Why would you say that?””

Rachel covered her mouth.

Because she realized what she had just revealed.

I stared at her.

“You knew something could happen.””

“No.””

“You were afraid something would happen.””

Rachel looked at me.

“I was afraid she would tell you everything.””

The room became silent.

My dad whispered:

“Everything about what?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

He grabbed the table.

“Rachel.””

She started crying.

Not the controlled tears she used before.

Real panic.

“Your mother found out I had been manipulating things.””

My heart stopped.

“What things?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Tyler.””

My dad frowned.

“What about him?””

She looked down.

“I taught him.””

The words were barely audible.

But they destroyed everything.

“You taught him what?”” my dad asked.

Rachel cried harder.

“How to get attention.””

Nobody spoke.

“How to make people feel sorry for him.””

I felt cold.

“And how to blame me.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

My dad stepped away.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t think it would go this far.””

“You knew he lied about the TV.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me punish Emma?””

Rachel couldn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My dad turned away.

I had never seen him look so broken.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A message.

From Tyler.

One sentence.

“You’re hearing her side because she’s scared.””

I opened it.

Another message appeared.

“But you still don’t know what your dad did.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at my father.

“What does he mean?””

My dad didn’t answer.

And that terrified me.

May you like

Because I realized something.

Rachel wasn’t the only person who had secrets.
