Chapter 13: The Name On The Document

My father stared at the photograph for almost a full minute.

He didn’t blink.

He didn’t move.

He just looked at the name underneath the courthouse picture like those words had pulled the ground out from beneath him.

I had never seen my father afraid before.

Angry?

Yes.

Sad?

Countless times.

Guilty?

More times than I could count.

But afraid?

Never.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

I looked at the phone.

“What name is that?””

His fingers tightened around the device.

“Emma…”

The way he said my name made my stomach drop.

“What?””

He slowly handed me the phone.

The message was simple.

I know who my real father is.

Below it was a name.

*Michael Carter.*

I stared at it.

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant everything to my father.

“Who is Michael Carter?””

My dad sat down heavily.

For a moment, I thought he might refuse to answer.

That he might do what he always did.

Hide the truth until the damage was already done.

But then he looked at me.

And something changed.

No more secrets.

No more protecting people.

“No one.””

I frowned.

“That’s not true.””

He looked down.

“He was someone your mother knew.””

My heart tightened.

“My mother?””

My dad nodded.

“Before we got married.””

I waited.

He took a deep breath.

“Michael was your mother’s friend from college.””

“Friend?””

My father looked away.

“More than that.””

The silence was painful.

“You mean they dated?””

“Yes.””

I sat there.

Trying to understand.

“So Tyler thinks Michael is his father?””

My dad nodded.

“That’s what he believes.””

“Is he?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

The words hit harder than expected.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“How can you not know?””

My father rubbed his face.

“Because after your mother died, I found documents.””

“What documents?””

“A paternity test.””

I froze.

“For Tyler?””

He nodded.

“But I never opened it.””

My eyes widened.

“Why?””

“Because Rachel begged me not to.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“She begged you not to open a test that could explain your entire family?””

“Yes.””

“And you listened?””

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

I stood up.

“I don’t understand you.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“For years, everyone acted like I was the problem. But the entire time, you were sitting on answers.””

My father looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone was scared.””

I looked toward the house.

“Rachel was scared of losing control. Tyler was scared nobody cared about him. You were scared of the truth.””

A tear slipped down my father’s face.

“And I was the one who had to live inside everyone else’s fear.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

That was the thing.

He didn’t defend himself anymore.

And somehow, that hurt even more.

A few hours later, we found the documents.

They were hidden in an old storage box in my father’s office.

The envelope was yellow from age.

My dad held it but didn’t open it.

“You do it.””

I looked at him.

“Why me?””

“Because you deserve the truth more than anyone.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a report.

A DNA test.

My hands trembled as I read the first page.

Then the second.

Then the final result.

I looked up.

My father’s face was pale.

“What does it say?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because the truth was not what anyone expected.

I handed him the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he whispered:

“No.””

I looked at the result again.

It confirmed something.

Something that changed everything.

Tyler’s biological father was not Michael Carter.

And he wasn’t my father either.

My dad looked at me.

“Then who…”

The doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

A man stood outside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Holding a folder.

My father went completely still.

Because he recognized him.

Michael Carter.

He looked past my father.

Straight at me.

May you like

Then he said:

“I think it’s time Emma knows what really happened.””
