Chapter 9: The Memory That Changed Everything
Nobody spoke.
The entire room felt frozen.
Tyler stood there holding the USB drive like it was a weapon.
Like he had been waiting for this moment.
My dad looked at him.
“Where did you get that?””
Tyler smiled.
“From your old office.””
My dad’s face changed.
“You went through my things?””
“I was looking for answers.””
“You don’t get to say that after everything you’ve done.””
Tyler ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“You want the truth, right?””
I swallowed.
“What truth?””
He held up the USB.
“The truth about your mother.””
My dad stepped between us.
“Don’t.””
Tyler laughed.
“Why?””
Because for the first time, my dad looked afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“Because you don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Tyler’s smile faded.
“Actually, I do.””
He looked at me.
“You’ve spent years believing everyone abandoned you.””
I didn’t answer.
“But what if your mother left because of something you did?””
My chest tightened.
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
He looked at Dad.
“Tell her.””
My dad went silent.
And that silence hurt.
Again.
“Dad?””
He looked away.
Tyler noticed.
“That’s what I thought.””
I felt my heart racing.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
My dad closed his eyes.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Not again.””
My voice shook.
“I’m done being the only person in this family who doesn’t know the truth.””
My dad looked broken.
Then he said:
“Your mother’s accident…”
I stopped breathing.
“It wasn’t just an accident.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
My dad looked at the floor.
“She was driving because we had an argument.””
My hands went cold.
“About what?””
He swallowed.
“About Rachel.””
Everything stopped.
Tyler looked at me.
“You see?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, that doesn’t mean anything.””
Tyler plugged the USB into the laptop on the table.
“You should watch.””
My dad didn’t stop him.
That scared me more than anything.
The video appeared.
A car dashboard camera.
My mother’s car.
Her voice.
My mother.
“I can’t believe you’re choosing her.””
My dad’s voice answered.
“I’m not choosing anyone.””
“Yes, you are.””
The video continued.
The argument was intense.
But then something happened.
Something nobody expected.
My mother said:
“Emma heard everything.””
I froze.
“What?””
My dad looked at me.
The video continued.
“She knows.””
My father’s younger voice sounded panicked.
“She’s a child.””
“She deserves to know.””
Then another sound.
A door closing.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my dad.
“What did I hear?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
His eyes filled with tears.
And then he said the sentence that shattered everything.
“Emma… your mother didn’t leave because of Rachel.””
I waited.
“She left because she was trying to protect you.””
I felt dizzy.
“What?””
My dad looked at the USB.
“Tyler found the wrong video.””
Tyler’s face changed.
“What?””
My dad continued.
“He doesn’t know what happened after this recording.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother wasn’t angry because she wanted to leave.””
A pause.
“She was angry because she found out someone had been trying to hurt you.””
I looked at Rachel.
Her face had gone completely white.
And suddenly, she whispered:
“David…”
My dad turned toward her.
“You knew.””
Rachel didn’t move.
“You knew what happened that night.””
Nobody breathed.
Then my dad said:
“Tell Emma the truth.””
Rachel looked at me.
And after years of lies…
She finally said the words I never expected to hear.
“I wasn’t trying to replace your mother.””
May you like
A pause.
“I was trying to make sure you never got the chance to expose me.””
