Chapter 3: The Recording

I stood outside my bedroom door, completely still.

For a moment, I wondered if I had heard wrong.

Maybe the walls were too thin.

Maybe I was tired.

Maybe my brain was filling in the worst possible answer.

Then Rachel spoke again.

“I’m serious, David.””

My dad.

My dad’s name.

“I can’t keep watching the two of them fight,” Rachel said.

“Tyler is trying to adjust, and Emma keeps making everything difficult.””

My hands started shaking.

Everything difficult.

That was the phrase they always used.

Never angry.

Never hurt.

Never ignored.

Just difficult.

Dad sighed.

“I don’t want her to feel like we’re abandoning her.””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“She already acts like she hates this family.””

I almost laughed.

Because nobody ever asked why.

Nobody asked what it felt like to watch your own father slowly become a stranger.

Nobody asked what it felt like when your stepmother smiled more warmly at her son than she ever did at you.

Then Tyler spoke.

“Maybe she needs some time away.””

I covered my mouth.

Even now, he was pretending to care.

Dad was silent for a long time.

Then he said:

“I’ll think about it.””

That was enough.

I walked back into my room.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Like I was afraid they would hear my heart breaking.

I sat on my bed.

Then I picked up my phone.

I opened the video.

But this time, I didn’t just watch the beginning.

I watched everything.

The camera had captured more than I realized.

After Tyler broke the TV, he walked back into the hallway.

And Rachel met him there.

Their voices were quiet.

But clear.

Rachel said:

“Perfect.””

Tyler laughed.

“I told you she’d get blamed.””

I stopped the video.

My entire body went numb.

They planned it.

They actually planned it.

The next morning, I made a decision.

No more defending myself.

No more asking.

No more hoping they would suddenly become the family I wanted.

I was going to show them the truth.

But I wasn’t going to do it in anger.

I was going to do it when everyone was forced to listen.

At dinner that night, Dad announced something.

“We need to talk about yesterday.””

I looked up.

Rachel sat beside him.

Tyler sat across from me.

The three of them looked united.

Like I was the outsider.

Dad folded his hands.

“Emma, I think you owe Tyler an apology.””

I stared at him.

“For what?””

“For accusing him.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You still believe him?””

Dad’s expression tightened.

“Emma.””

“No. I want to understand.””

Rachel interrupted.

“You always turn everything into a fight.””

I looked at her.

Then at Tyler.

Then back at my dad.

“I have something to show you.””

Nobody moved.

Dad frowned.

“What?””

I placed my phone on the table.

“I recorded something yesterday.””

Tyler’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Rachel noticed too.

“What do you mean recorded?””

I pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Tyler’s voice filled the dining room.

“Don’t worry. She’ll get blamed like always.””

My dad’s face changed.

Rachel reached for the phone.

I pulled it back.

“No.””

The video continued.

The soccer ball.

The kick.

The smile.

Nobody spoke.

Then came the hallway conversation.

“Perfect.””

“I told you she’d get blamed.””

The room became completely silent.

Tyler looked pale.

Rachel looked terrified.

My dad didn’t move.

He just stared at the phone.

When the video ended, nobody knew what to say.

Finally, Dad whispered:

“Tyler…”

Tyler immediately shook his head.

“It’s edited.””

I almost smiled.

Because that was exactly what I expected.

Rachel jumped in.

“David, we don’t know if this is real.””

My dad looked at her.

For the first time, he looked at her differently.

Not like his wife.

Like someone he was questioning.

Then his eyes moved back to Tyler.

“Did you do this?””

Tyler opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that silence said everything.

My dad stood up.

Slowly.

His face was filled with something I hadn’t seen in a long time.

Regret.

“Emma…”

I looked away.

Because I wasn’t ready for an apology.

Not yet.

Not after spending so long begging to be believed.

Then my phone buzzed.

A notification appeared.

A new video file.

I frowned.

I hadn’t recorded anything else.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

Because it wasn’t from my phone.

It was from a hidden backup.

A recording Tyler didn’t know existed.

And the first thing I heard was my stepmother’s voice saying:

“Once David believes Emma is the problem, getting rid of her will be easy.””

My dad heard it too.

And this time…

May you like

He didn’t just look angry.

He looked destroyed.
