Chapter 5: The Plan Behind The Smile
The next morning, I woke up feeling like I had barely slept.
Because I hadn’t.
My dad’s words kept replaying in my mind.
The recording was from three weeks earlier.
Someone had deleted it.
And whatever was on it explained everything.
I found my dad sitting at the kitchen table.
Two cups of coffee sat untouched in front of him.
That alone scared me.
My dad loved coffee.
He drank it every morning.
But now he was just staring at the table.
“Dad?””
He looked up.
“Morning.””
I sat down across from him.
“What did you find?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he unlocked his phone.
“I want you to hear this.””
My stomach tightened.
He pressed play.
At first, there was only background noise.
Then I heard Tyler’s voice.
“I don’t understand why she still lives here.””
My hands went cold.
The recording continued.
Rachel answered.
“Because David feels guilty.””
Tyler laughed.
“He always feels guilty.””
My dad paused the audio.
I looked at him.
“Keep playing.””
He nodded.
The recording continued.
Rachel’s voice became clearer.
“Your job is simple. Don’t fight with her.””
Tyler sounded confused.
“What?””
“Everyone expects teenagers to argue. But if you stay calm, she’ll look like the difficult one.””
I covered my mouth.
My dad looked away.
The recording continued.
Tyler asked:
“What if Dad believes her?””
Rachel laughed.
“He won’t.””
A pause.
Then:
“He hasn’t believed her for years.””
The audio stopped.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at my dad.
He looked like someone had physically hurt him.
Because the worst part wasn’t that Rachel and Tyler lied.
It was that they had studied him.
They knew exactly how to manipulate him.
And they knew exactly how to use me.
My dad whispered:
“I was so blind.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know what to say.
A person can apologize for making one mistake.
But what do you say when someone realizes they ignored you for years?
My dad looked at me.
“Why didn’t you tell me you felt this way?””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because the question was impossible.
“I did.””
His face fell.
“You did?””
“Yeah.””
I looked at the table.
“I told you when Rachel made jokes about me being an outsider. I told you when Tyler took my things without asking. I told you when you stopped coming to my school events because Tyler had a game.””
My dad looked down.
Each memory landed harder than the last.
“I thought you were adjusting.””
I looked at him.
“I was.””
He looked confused.
“Then what happened?””
I swallowed.
“I realized I was the only one adjusting.””
The words stayed between us.
My dad covered his face.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Rachel.
He answered.
“Hello?””
I couldn’t hear what she said.
But I watched his expression change.
“No.””
A pause.
“No, Rachel. You don’t get to explain this away.””
Another pause.
Then his voice became sharper.
“You manipulated my daughter.””
I looked away.
Hearing him defend me felt strange.
Almost unfamiliar.
A few minutes later, he ended the call.
“She wants to talk.””
I nodded.
“Are you going to let her?””
My dad looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
That was the honest answer.
And somehow, I respected it.
Later that afternoon, Rachel arrived.
Without Tyler.
She stood at the front door looking different.
Not like the confident woman who used to control every conversation.
She looked nervous.
My dad opened the door.
“Come in.””
She stepped inside.
Her eyes immediately found me.
“Emma.””
I didn’t respond.
She swallowed.
“I owe you an apology.””
I almost believed her.
Almost.
Then she added:
“But you need to understand why I did what I did.””
There it was.
The excuse.
My dad crossed his arms.
“Why?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of losing my family.””
I stared at her.
“You tried to destroy mine.””
Her face tightened.
“That’s not fair.””
I shook my head.
“No. What’s not fair is you teaching your son that hurting me was easier than accepting me.””
Rachel looked away.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
Then my dad’s phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What happened?””
He didn’t answer.
He just turned the phone around.
It was a message.
From Tyler.
Three words.
“I found the evidence.””
My heart dropped.
My dad immediately called him.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then another message appeared.
This time, from Tyler.
“You’re going to regret choosing her.””
My dad stood up.
And suddenly, I understood.
The recordings weren’t the only thing Tyler had hidden.
May you like
There was something else.
Something he was afraid we would find.
