The Woman at My Door / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Too Much

I didn’t move.

I couldn’t.

The stranger stood on the other side of my door holding a folder full of my husband’s secrets, and somehow that felt more terrifying than Vanessa standing there the night before.

Because Vanessa had come with anger.

This man came with evidence.

My phone was still pressed to my ear.

“Andre,” I whispered.

“Tell me who he is.””

There was a long silence.

The kind of silence that made my stomach twist.

“Naomi, step away from the door.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“Please.””

The fear in his voice stopped me.

Not guilt.

Not annoyance.

Fear.

I had known Andre for eleven years.

I knew when he was pretending.

I knew when he was hiding frustration.

I knew when he was trying to avoid an argument.

But I had never heard him sound afraid.

The man outside knocked again.

“Naomi, I know this is confusing.””

I flinched.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“My name is Daniel Brooks.””

I looked through the window again.

He wasn’t threatening.

He wasn’t angry.

That almost made it worse.

People who wanted to hurt you usually made it obvious.

The dangerous ones were the people who smiled.

“Why are you here?”” I asked.

Daniel looked directly at me.

“Because your husband is not telling you the truth.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“You’re the third person today who has said that.””

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“And yet you still haven’t asked the most important question.””

“What question?””

He glanced at the folder.

“Who is Andre really?””

The words made my chest tighten.

Because I hated that a part of me wanted to know.

I hated that after everything, after years of loving someone, I was suddenly standing at my own front door wondering if I had ever truly known him.

“Naomi,” Andre said quietly through the phone.

I looked down.

“Don’t listen to him.””

My eyes lifted.

“Why?””

Silence.

“Why shouldn’t I listen to him?””

“Because he’s dangerous.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“Interesting.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed toward my phone.

“He always says that when he runs out of explanations.””

My blood went cold.

“How do you know what he said?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped away from the door.

Not toward him.

Away.

“Who are you?””

Daniel looked down for a moment.

Then he said something I never expected.

“I used to work with your husband.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I knew Andre before you did.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

Not sadness.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Confusion.

Because every person who had appeared in my life over the past twenty-four hours seemed to know a version of Andre that I didn’t.

Vanessa knew the man who whispered promises.

Daniel knew the man from before our marriage.

And I knew the man who kissed my forehead every morning.

Or at least I thought I did.

“What kind of work?””

Daniel looked at the house.

Then at me.

“Not the kind he told you about.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“He told me he worked in consulting.””

“He does.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“It isn’t.””

I hated how calm he was.

Like he had all day.

Like my entire life wasn’t falling apart.

“I’m not opening this door.””

“I didn’t ask you to.””

“Then why are you here?””

He lifted the folder.

“Because this belongs to you.””

I looked at it.

“What is it?””

“The truth.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone had the truth now.

Except me.

“I’m done hearing that word.””

Daniel’s expression softened slightly.

“Fair.””

That surprised me.

He wasn’t fighting me.

He wasn’t pushing.

He was waiting.

“I’ll leave this here,” he said.

He placed the folder on the ground.

“But before I go, I need you to know one thing.””

I didn’t respond.

“Vanessa thinks she’s the only woman your husband betrayed.””

My heart stopped.

The air disappeared from the room.

“What?””

Daniel looked at my phone.

“Ask him.””

I turned away from the window.

“Andre?””

Nothing.

“Andre.””

Finally, his voice came.

“Naomi, don’t.””

That was the answer.

Not a denial.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Just:

Don’t.

I closed my eyes.

A painful realization settled over me.

The worst part of betrayal wasn’t always discovering what someone did.

Sometimes it was discovering what they refused to say.

I walked to the door.

Slowly.

Carefully.

I unlocked it.

“Naomi!””

Andre shouted through the phone.

I ignored him.

I opened the door just enough to reach the folder.

Daniel stepped back immediately.

He respected the distance.

That almost made me trust him more.

Almost.

I picked up the folder and closed the door.

Then I locked it.

My hands were shaking.

I placed the folder on the kitchen table.

The same table where Andre and I had eaten dinner every night.

The same table where we had planned vacations.

The same table where he had once held my hand and promised we would grow old together.

I opened it.

The first page was a photograph.

Andre.

Standing outside an office building.

A date was written underneath.

Seven years ago.

I frowned.

Seven years.

That was before Emma.

Before our house.

Before everything.

The next page was a document.

I read the heading.

*Confidential Investigation Report.*

My stomach dropped.

I flipped the page.

There were names.

Companies.

Dates.

Payments.

I didn’t understand most of it.

But I understood one thing.

Andre’s name appeared everywhere.

“What did you do?””

I whispered.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Andre.

*Please stop reading.*

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

*I’m coming over.*

I typed back immediately.

*No.*

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

A minute later:

*Naomi, please.*

I ignored it.

Instead, I kept reading.

The report was confusing.

It talked about a business partnership.

A financial dispute.

Something involving a company Andre had never mentioned.

Then I found a photograph.

A photograph that made my blood run cold.

Andre.

Vanessa.

And another woman.

All standing together.

The date was two years ago.

The same year Vanessa claimed their relationship began.

But there was something strange.

The woman beside them.

I knew her.

Not personally.

But I knew her face.

I had seen her before.

On the news.

On the internet.

Everywhere.

Her name was Claire Whitmore.

A famous business owner.

A woman who had disappeared from public life three years ago.

Why was she in a photo with my husband?

I flipped the page.

And there it was.

A handwritten note.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Andre.

Someone else.

*If Naomi finds this, tell her Andre never started this. He inherited it.*

I stared.

Inherited what?

The front door suddenly opened.

I jumped.

“Mom?””

I turned.

Emma stood there holding her backpack.

My heart nearly stopped.

“What are you doing home?””

“My teacher called you.””

I looked at the clock.

I hadn’t noticed the time.

“I forgot pickup.””

Her face fell.

“You forgot me?””

The guilt hit instantly.

“No, baby.””

I rushed over.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked past me.

At the papers on the table.

“Is that about Dad?””

I froze.

Kids noticed everything.

I knelt down.

“It’s nothing you need to worry about.””

“But everyone is worried.””

My throat tightened.

“Who?””

She looked down.

“Grandma called.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“She asked if we were okay.””

My stomach sank.

“My mom called you?””

Emma nodded.

“She said she needed to talk to you.””

I stood slowly.

My mother-in-law knew.

How?

Before I could process it, my phone rang.

Mom.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice came immediately.

“Naomi, thank God.””

I walked away from Emma.

“What’s going on?””

There was silence.

Then my mother whispered:

“You need to get out of that house.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“Do not let Andre come back.””

I stared at the papers.

At the folder.

At the secrets surrounding my husband.

“Mom, what do you know?””

Another pause.

And then she said the one thing I never expected.

“Naomi… your father knew about Andre before you married him.””

I stopped breathing.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“But Dad died six years ago.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“And he took the secret with him.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“What secret?””

My mother started crying.

And then she said:

“The man you married was never the man he told you he was.””

I looked at the folder.

At Andre’s photograph.

At the life I thought I understood.

May you like

And for the first time, I wondered if Vanessa hadn’t come to destroy my marriage.

Maybe she had come to warn me.
