The Woman at My Door / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Husband I Never Knew

The first thing I noticed was that Claire looked afraid.

Not worried.

Not nervous.

Afraid.

And that scared me more than anything she had said.

Because people like Claire Whitmore were not supposed to be afraid.

Her face had been on magazine covers.

Her company had been worth millions.

She was the kind of woman people described as untouchable.

Yet she was standing on my porch looking over her shoulder like someone was coming for her.

Someone powerful.

Someone dangerous.

I tightened my grip on the door.

“Who knows?””

Claire looked at me.

“You need to understand something.””

“No.””

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

“I’m done understanding. Everyone keeps telling me I need to understand.””

Her expression softened.

“Naomi.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My husband lied to me. My mother knew. Some stranger showed up with documents.

You appeared out of nowhere. Everyone knows a different version of my life except me.””

My voice cracked.

“So tell me something real.””

Claire stayed silent.

“Who knows?””

Finally, she answered.

“People who have been looking for Adrian.””

I stared at her.

“Your husband.””

I hated how naturally she said it.

Like Andre was just a name.

Like my husband had been a stranger living inside my house.

“How long?””

Claire looked down.

“How long what?””

“How long have you known where he was?””

A pause.

Then:

“Eleven years.””

My stomach dropped.

The same number of years I had known him.

The same amount of time we had been together.

“You knew him before I met him.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I couldn’t.””

“Couldn’t?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Your father made me promise.””

The anger inside me shifted.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“My father knew you?””

Claire nodded.

“He helped Adrian disappear.””

The words felt impossible.

“My father helped my husband fake his identity?””

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

It was because my life had become something I couldn’t recognize.

“My entire marriage was built on a secret.””

Claire didn’t argue.

That hurt more.

Because if she had denied it, I could have fought her.

But she looked at me like she knew she was telling the truth.

“Why?””

I whispered.

“Why would my father do that?””

Claire looked toward the street.

Then back at me.

“Because he knew what Adrian’s family was capable of.””

“His family?””

“The Whitmores.””

I looked at the photograph still sitting in my hand.

A younger Andre.

A different name.

A different life.

“What did they do?””

Claire hesitated.

Then said:

“They destroyed anyone who threatened them.””

The wind moved through the trees outside.

For a moment, all I heard was the sound of leaves.

Then my phone rang.

Andre.

I looked at the screen.

Claire noticed.

“Answer it.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you need to hear what he says when he doesn’t know I’m here.””

I almost refused.

But I answered.

“Hello.””

“Naomi.””

His voice immediately changed.

Not because he knew Claire was there.

Because he knew something was happening.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

A pause.

“Is someone with you?””

I looked at Claire.

“Yes.””

Silence.

“Who?””

I swallowed.

“Claire.””

The silence that followed was different.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“Naomi, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You listen.””

“Please.””

“No more please.””

I looked at Claire.

“You knew her.””

Andre didn’t answer.

“You knew Claire Whitmore.””

Another silence.

“You knew Daniel.””

Nothing.

“And you knew my father.””

This time, his breathing changed.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

“Naomi—”

“How long were you planning to keep this from me?””

“I never wanted you involved.””

I felt my anger rise.

“You married me.””

“Yes.””

“You built a life with me.””

“Yes.””

“You had a child with me.””

His voice broke.

“Yes.””

“Then I was involved.””

Silence.

I wiped my face.

“Who are you, Andre?””

The question hung between us.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then he answered quietly.

“My name is Adrian.””

My heart stopped.

Even though I already knew.

Even though Claire had told me.

Hearing him say it was different.

“You’re admitting it?””

“Yes.””

“Why now?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I looked at the folder.

At the secrets.

At the years of lies.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“I deserved the truth eleven years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I loved you.””

The answer came so quickly that it hurt.

I closed my eyes.

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

“Then what was I?””

A pause.

“What?””

“What was I to you?””

His voice became softer.

“You were the only real thing in my life.””

I hated that those words affected me.

I hated that part of me still wanted to believe him.

Because love didn’t disappear just because someone hurt you.

Sometimes it stayed.

Sometimes it made the pain worse.

“I need to know everything.””

“You’re not ready.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I’m ready for.””

“Naomi—”

“No.””

I looked at Claire.

“I want the truth.””

Andre was silent.

Then he said:

“Okay.””

A long breath.

“I was born Adrian Whitmore.””

Claire looked away.

“After my father died, my family fought over control of the company.””

“Claire’s company?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“My uncle tried to remove me.””

“How?””

Andre paused.

“By making sure I couldn’t inherit anything.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t explain changing your name.””

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“Because it wasn’t just about money.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What was it about?””

Another pause.

Then:

“My uncle was involved in criminal activity.””

The room felt colder.

“He wanted me gone because I found out.””

Claire closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you stop him?””

Pain crossed her face.

“I tried.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Like she had been carrying that guilt for years.

Andre continued.

“Your father helped me disappear.””

I looked at the photograph.

“My father knew you were alive?””

“Yes.””

“And he never told me?””

“No.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

Andre’s voice became quiet.

“Because he was protecting you.””

The same words everyone used.

Protecting me.

From the truth.

From danger.

From a life I apparently had no choice in living.

But I was tired of being protected.

I wanted to be respected.

“I found the folder.””

Silence.

Andre’s breathing stopped.

“What folder?””

“The one Daniel brought.””

Another pause.

“Naomi, you need to burn it.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Do not read any more.””

“Why?””

“Because those documents are dangerous.””

“They’re about you.””

“They’re about everyone.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

Before he answered, Claire stepped closer.

Her face changed.

“What is it?””

I covered the phone.

“What?””

She looked toward the window.

“There’s someone outside.””

I turned.

The black SUV was gone.

But another car had stopped in front of the house.

A gray sedan.

My stomach tightened.

“Who is that?””

Claire didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

I looked back at the phone.

“Andre?””

His voice became urgent.

“Naomi, listen to me.””

“What?””

“Take Emma and leave.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“Go somewhere safe.””

“Why?””

A sound came from outside.

The sound of a car door opening.

Claire moved away from the window.

“Too late.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She whispered:

“They found you.””

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice came from outside.

A man’s voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Naomi Carter?””

I froze.

I had never heard that voice before.

But Claire had.

Her face turned completely pale.

“Who is it?””

She looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Adrian’s father.””
