Chapter 7: The Man Who Should Have Stayed Buried
The world seemed to stop.
Not because someone was standing outside my door.
Not because my husband had admitted he was someone else.
Not because my entire marriage had been built around a secret.
But because of the way Claire said it.
Not with anger.
Not with hatred.
With fear.
*Adrian’s father.*
I stared at her.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire didn’t look away from the window.
“No.””
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“That’s the one thing you need to understand, Naomi.””
The doorbell rang again.
This time, slower.
Almost patient.
The kind of patience that made my skin crawl.
“He’s supposed to be dead.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Claire finally turned.
“Adrian’s father died eleven years ago.””
The phone was still pressed against my ear.
Andre heard everything.
“No.””
His voice came through.
A single word.
Full of disbelief.
“Naomi, get away from the door.””
I looked toward it.
The man outside knocked again.
“Naomi Carter?””
He knew my name.
My daughter’s backpack was still sitting near the kitchen.
Emma was upstairs.
The thought hit me harder than anything else.
My child was in this house.
I lowered my voice.
“Claire, what do I do?””
For the first time since she arrived, Claire looked unsure.
Not because she didn’t know the answer.
Because she knew exactly what the answer was.
“Don’t let him see Emma.””
My stomach dropped.
“He knows about her?””
Claire nodded slowly.
“He knows everything.””
I felt cold.
Everything.
The word echoed in my head.
The front door.
The folder.
The secrets.
My entire life.
All of it.
The man outside spoke again.
“I know you’re confused.””
His voice was calm.
Almost kind.
“That’s understandable.””
I stepped backward.
“How does he know I’m confused?””
Claire’s face tightened.
“Because he’s always been good at knowing what people feel.””
The phone crackled.
“Naomi.””
Andre’s voice.
“Listen to me.””
I put it closer.
“Where are you?””
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“You’re not coming here.””
“Naomi—”
“No.””
I looked at the door.
“You don’t get to show up every time there’s a disaster and act like you can fix it.””
Silence.
Then:
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I know I don’t deserve that.””
My eyes burned.
“But I’m still coming.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“Because I promised your father I would protect you.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
The anger returned.
“Everyone keeps talking about my father like he was part of some secret organization.””
“He was trying to keep you alive.””
I stared at the door.
“From your father?””
Silence.
That was enough.
I whispered:
“Adrian…”
The name felt strange.
Wrong.
And yet somehow right.
“Tell me the truth.””
“I am.””
“No.””
I looked at Claire.
“Not the pieces you think I can handle.””
My voice cracked.
“All of it.””
The line stayed quiet.
Then he said:
“My father didn’t die.””
The room went still.
“I know.””
“No, Naomi.””
His voice became serious.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
“He was declared dead.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone made it look like he died.””
The doorbell rang again.
This time, the man outside spoke.
“Adrian.””
My entire body froze.
He knew.
He knew Andre was on the phone.
Claire moved closer.
“Don’t answer him.””
But I couldn’t stop listening.
The man continued.
“You’ve spent enough time hiding.””
My hands started shaking.
“How does he know?””
Andre’s voice was quiet.
“Because he’s been looking for me.””
“For eleven years?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the door.
“Why now?””
Another pause.
Then Andre said something that made my heart stop.
“Because he knows I have something he wants.””
“What?””
Silence.
“Adrian.””
The man outside said his name again.
Not Andre.
Adrian.
Like he was reminding him who he really was.
“I know you’re in there.””
Claire moved toward the hallway.
“We need to leave.””
I nodded.
Finally.
A decision.
Something I could control.
I ran upstairs.
“Emma?””
No answer.
My heart jumped.
“Emma?””
Then I heard her.
“In here.””
I rushed into her room.
She was sitting on the bed holding her stuffed dinosaur.
“Mom?””
I knelt.
“Put on your shoes.””
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“Why?””
“Because we’re going somewhere.””
“Where?””
I forced a smile.
“Somewhere safe.””
Children always knew when adults were lying.
But Emma was scared enough to listen.
She grabbed her shoes.
Then she looked at me.
“Is Dad coming?””
The question almost broke me.
“Yes.””
I hated that I didn’t know if that was true.
“But not right now.””
We moved quickly.
I grabbed my purse.
My phone.
The folder.
Then I stopped.
The folder.
A part of me wanted to leave it.
To burn it.
To forget.
But another part of me knew.
The truth was the only thing I had left.
When I came downstairs, Claire was standing near the kitchen window.
Her face was tense.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“He’s not alone.””
My stomach dropped.
“How many people?””
“Two cars.””
I looked toward Emma.
She was holding her dinosaur.
She didn’t understand.
She shouldn’t have to understand.
“Back door?””
Claire nodded.
“Go.””
We moved quietly.
Almost silently.
Then the front door shook.
Not a knock.
A hit.
Emma grabbed my hand.
“Mom?””
“It’s okay.””
I whispered.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
The back door opened.
We stepped outside.
Cold air hit my face.
The yard was dark.
We were halfway across the grass when a voice came from behind us.
“Naomi.””
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from memory.
From the way Claire reacted.
I turned slowly.
An older man stood at the back door.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
Calm expression.
He looked nothing like the monster I expected.
That made him worse.
His eyes moved to Emma.
Then back to me.
“So this is Adrian’s daughter.””
My entire body went cold.
“She’s my daughter.””
The man smiled.
“I know.””
I stepped in front of Emma.
“Who are you?””
He looked almost offended.
“Adrian never told you about me?””
“No.””
A sad smile appeared on his face.
“That hurts.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Victor.””
The man looked at her.
“Claire.””
The way he said her name was terrifying.
Like they had history.
Like he knew exactly where to hurt her.
“You helped him hide.””
Claire’s face hardened.
“I saved his life.””
Victor smiled.
“Same thing.””
I looked at him.
“You’re Adrian’s father?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you’re alive.””
“Yes.””
My hands tightened.
“What do you want?””
Victor looked at me.
Then at the folder in my hand.
“I want what your husband stole.””
I glanced down.
“The documents?””
“No.””
His eyes moved back to mine.
“I want my family’s legacy.””
I shook my head.
“You’re insane.””
He smiled.
“Maybe.””
Then he said:
“But ask yourself something, Naomi.””
My heart slowed.
“What?””
“If Adrian truly loved you…”
He took one step forward.
“Why did he never tell you that your father died protecting him?””
I froze.
My father.
Again.
Everything always came back to him.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor smiled.
And for the first time, I understood why everyone feared him.
Because he didn’t need to threaten.
He only needed to reveal pieces of the truth.
“Your husband knows exactly why your father died.””
I looked at my phone.
At Adrian.
At the man I thought I knew.
“Is that true?””
Silence.
“Adrian.””
No answer.
My heart cracked.
“Tell me.””
Finally, his voice came through.
Quiet.
Broken.
“Yes.””
I stared.
“What?””
“My father caused your father’s death.””
The world disappeared.
Emma’s hand slipped tighter into mine.
Claire closed her eyes.
And Victor smiled.
Because he knew.
He knew he had just destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
Adrian whispered:
“Naomi, I can explain.””
But I couldn’t hear anything after that.
Because the man I loved had just admitted the one thing I could never forgive.
May you like
He had known.
All along.
