The Woman at My Door / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Name My Father Buried

I stood in the middle of my kitchen, unable to speak.

My mother’s words kept repeating in my head.

*The man you married was never the man he told you he was.*

For years, I had believed I knew Andre.

I knew his favorite coffee order.

I knew he hated crowded restaurants.

I knew he always checked the locks twice before bed.

I knew he cried during sad movies but pretended he had something in his eye.

I knew the little things.

The ordinary things.

The things that made someone feel like home.

But suddenly, I was realizing something terrifying.

Knowing someone’s habits didn’t mean you knew their history.

“Mom,” I whispered.

My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.

“What are you talking about?””

There was a long silence.

I could hear her breathing.

Like she was standing at the edge of a cliff, trying to decide whether jumping would hurt less than staying there.

“I should have told you years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“Told me what?””

“About your father.””

I looked toward the folder on the table.

The investigation report.

The photographs.

The secrets.

“What does Dad have to do with Andre?””

My mother exhaled shakily.

“Everything.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Mom, stop speaking in riddles.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I need answers.””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Your father knew Andre’s family.””

I frowned.

“What family?””

“His real family.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What does that mean?””

My mother lowered her voice.

“Naomi, Andre didn’t come into your life by accident.””

I felt a chill move across my skin.

“No.””

“He met you because of who your father was.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

I said it again.

Louder.

Because that answer was impossible.

Because I refused to believe my entire marriage had been built on some hidden plan.

“That’s not true.””

“Naomi—”

“No.””

I looked at the family photos on the wall.

Pictures of birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

Beach vacations.

Eleven years of memories.

“You’re telling me my husband married me because of my father?””

“I don’t know exactly why.””

“But you knew?””

My mother went quiet.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“Naomi—”

“You knew something about him and you let me marry him?””

“I was afraid.””

The anger came faster than the pain.

“You were afraid?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

Her voice dropped.

“Of losing you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You should have been afraid of me finding out.””

A quiet sob came through the phone.

“I know.””

For a moment, I wanted to comfort her.

Then I remembered.

Everyone had secrets.

Everyone had explanations.

Everyone had a reason.

Except me.

I was the person who had been left to discover everything piece by piece.

“Tell me his real name.””

Silence.

My heart started pounding.

“Mom.””

“I can’t.””

My anger exploded.

“You can’t?””

“No.””

“You called me and told me to leave my husband, but now you can’t tell me why?””

“I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“Your father spent years trying to make sure this never came back.””

“Make what never came back?””

My mother whispered:

“The Whitmore family.””

The name hit me.

I looked at the photograph again.

Claire Whitmore.

The woman standing beside Andre.

The woman whose disappearance had been on every news channel.

“Claire Whitmore?””

My mother went silent.

That silence was confirmation.

“Mom…”

“How do you know that name?””

I stared at the picture.

“Because she’s in this folder.””

My mother’s breathing changed.

“Naomi, listen to me.””

“I’m listening.””

“You need to leave the house.””

“Why?””

“Because if Claire is involved, then Andre is not the biggest danger.””

My heart froze.

“Who is?””

Before she could answer, someone knocked on the door.

I stopped.

My mother heard it.

“Who is there?””

I didn’t answer.

I walked slowly toward the window.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

My pulse quickened.

“Mom.””

“What?””

“There’s a car outside.””

“Don’t go near the window.””

Too late.

The passenger door opened.

A woman stepped out.

I recognized her immediately.

Not from the news.

From the photograph.

Claire Whitmore.

My hand covered my mouth.

“No.””

My mother whispered:

“Naomi, run.””

The line went dead.

Claire didn’t knock immediately.

She stood outside my house for almost a full minute.

Like she was giving me time.

Like she knew I was watching.

That scared me more than if she had forced her way in.

Then she walked to the door.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Controlled.

I didn’t answer.

“Naomi?””

Her voice was calm.

Older than I expected.

Not threatening.

Almost gentle.

“I know you’re there.””

I stayed silent.

“I know Daniel came by.””

My eyes moved toward the folder.

“He shouldn’t have.””

My hand tightened.

Why did everyone know everything happening in my life?

“I’m not here to hurt you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone who entered my life recently said that.

Then they destroyed something anyway.

Claire continued.

“I’m here because Andre won’t tell you the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“How do you know my husband?””

The silence outside lasted several seconds.

Then:

“Because I knew him before you.””

The same words Daniel had used.

I felt sick.

“How many people knew him before me?””

Claire didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

I opened the door.

Only slightly.

Claire stood several feet away.

She respected the distance.

That was becoming a pattern.

Everyone who knew secrets about Andre seemed to know exactly how much space to give me.

“Who are you?””

Claire looked at me.

“You know who I am.””

“You’re Claire Whitmore.””

“Yes.””

“And you know Andre.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her expression changed.

A flicker of pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Because I was there when he lost everything.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked down.

“Before he was Andre Carter, he was Adrian Whitmore.””

The world went silent.

I stared at her.

“No.””

She didn’t blink.

“His real name is Adrian Whitmore.””

The name felt unreal.

Like something from a movie.

“My husband is not Adrian Whitmore.””

“He is.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, you’re wrong.””

Claire looked at me sadly.

“Naomi, I know this is impossible to accept.””

“You don’t know anything about what I can accept.””

“You’re right.””

She nodded.

“I don’t.””

A strange calm settled over me.

The kind that comes before breaking.

“Then tell me.””

Claire looked toward the house.

“Can I come inside?””

“No.””

She accepted it.

“Fine.””

She reached into her bag.

Not quickly.

Carefully.

She pulled out an old photograph.

Then held it toward me.

I almost didn’t take it.

But I did.

The picture was old.

A young man.

A woman.

A little boy.

I recognized the man immediately.

Andre.

Except younger.

Much younger.

The woman beside him was Claire.

And the child…

I looked closer.

A small boy with dark hair.

“Who is this?””

Claire’s eyes met mine.

“That’s Adrian.””

I looked at her.

Then at the picture.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Her voice softened.

“That’s the first thing everyone says.””

I stared.

“Why did he change his name?””

Claire looked away.

“Because someone tried to kill him.””

My fingers went cold.

“What?””

“Your husband disappeared eleven years ago because he was running.””

“Running from who?””

Claire looked directly at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes.

“His own family.””

A car door slammed behind her.

Claire turned sharply.

Her expression changed.

“Naomi.””

“What?””

“Do you trust Andre?””

The question felt like a knife.

“I don’t know anymore.””

She nodded.

“Good.””

I frowned.

“Good?””

“Because if you trusted him completely, you wouldn’t survive what comes next.””

My heart pounded.

“What comes next?””

Claire stepped back.

The black SUV across the street started moving.

Someone was watching.

Someone was waiting.

Claire looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Adrian didn’t leave his old life behind.””

She looked at the folder inside my house.

“He brought it with him.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

Claire’s face went pale.

“Naomi…”

She lowered her voice.

“The woman who came to your door last night wasn’t Andre’s mistress.””

I froze.

“Then who was she?””

Claire looked toward the road.

Then back at me.

“She was sent to find out if you knew the truth.””

A cold silence filled the space between us.

“And now that you do…”

May you like

Claire swallowed.

“They know too.””
