Chapter 8: The Truth My Father Took to His Grave
I didn’t remember leaving the house.
I remembered Emma’s hand in mine.
I remembered Claire telling me to keep moving.
I remembered Victor standing there with that calm, almost gentle expression as he watched my entire world collapse.
But after that?
Nothing.
Only pieces.
The sound of the car engine.
The rain hitting the windshield.
Emma asking if we were safe.
My own voice telling her yes when I had no idea if that was true.
And Adrian’s words repeating over and over.
*My father caused your father’s death.*
I sat in the passenger seat of Claire’s car, staring out the window.
The city passed by in a blur.
People walking.
Cars stopping at lights.
Someone laughing outside a restaurant.
The world looked normal.
That was the strangest part.
My world had changed completely, but everyone else was still living like nothing happened.
“Naomi.””
Claire’s voice pulled me back.
I didn’t look at her.
“What?””
“We need to talk.””
I almost smiled.
Everyone needed to talk.
That was all anyone ever wanted.
Talk.
Explain.
Confess.
After the damage was already done.
“I’m tired of conversations that start with secrets.””
Claire was quiet.
Good.
Because I didn’t have the energy to be polite.
Emma was sitting in the back seat.
Silent.
Too silent.
That scared me more than if she was crying.
Children should not know how to sit quietly during a disaster.
“Claire.””
“Yes?””
“When did you know?””
She glanced at me.
“Know what?””
“That Adrian was involved in my father’s death.””
Her hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“I knew there was a connection.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
She sighed.
“It isn’t.””
I turned toward her.
“Everyone does this.””
“What?””
“Everyone gives me half an answer and waits for me to be grateful.””
My voice shook.
“I don’t want protection. I want the truth.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
The agreement surprised me.
“My father and Adrian’s father had a business relationship.””
“Victor and my father?””
“Yes.””
“And what happened?””
Claire looked ahead.
“Your father discovered Victor was using the company for illegal operations.””
I listened.
“He wanted to expose him.””
“And Adrian?””
“Adrian found out too.””
I swallowed.
“So my father helped Adrian disappear.””
“Yes.””
“Because Victor wanted him dead.””
“Yes.””
I looked out the window.
“And my father?””
Claire’s silence was immediate.
Painful.
“What happened?””
Finally, she said:
“Your father died because Victor thought he knew where Adrian was.””
My chest tightened.
“But Adrian wasn’t there.””
“No.””
“Then why does Adrian say his father caused it?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because he blames himself.””
I frowned.
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“But guilt doesn’t always care about facts.””
I looked down.
A part of me wanted to believe that.
A part of me wanted to believe Adrian was still the man I loved.
But another part kept asking the same question.
Why didn’t he tell me?
Why did he let me build a life with him while carrying something this huge?
We stopped at a small house outside the city.
Not Claire’s.
Not mine.
Somewhere hidden.
Somewhere quiet.
I hated that I had to appreciate the safety of a place I didn’t understand.
Claire helped Emma inside.
The moment my daughter disappeared into the living room, I turned.
“Where is Adrian?””
Claire looked at me.
“He’s coming.””
“I don’t want him here.””
She didn’t argue.
“He knows.””
“Good.””
“Naomi.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I need you to understand something.””
She waited.
“I loved him.””
My voice cracked.
“I loved him more than anything.””
Claire looked down.
“And now I don’t know if the person I loved ever existed.””
The room became quiet.
Then Claire said:
“He did.””
I looked at her.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because I knew him before the lies.””
I looked away.
“That doesn’t make it easier.””
“No.””
Claire’s voice was gentle.
“It doesn’t.””
A car pulled up outside.
My entire body went tense.
I knew before anyone said anything.
Adrian.
Claire looked toward the window.
“He’s here.””
I didn’t move.
A minute later, the door opened.
And he walked in.
For a second, my heart betrayed me.
Because it was still him.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same man I had kissed goodbye thousands of times.
Then I remembered.
Adrian.
Not Andre.
A stranger wearing my husband’s face.
“Naomi.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“I know you’re angry.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t know anything.””
His expression broke.
“I know I hurt you.””
“You lied to me for eleven years.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe my father died without knowing the truth.””
“I know.””
“You let me raise our daughter while you kept a completely different identity.””
“I know.””
His voice was quiet.
And somehow that made me angrier.
Because I wanted him to defend himself.
I wanted him to fight.
But he just stood there accepting my anger.
“I need you to tell me something.””
He nodded.
“Anything.””
“Did you ever love me?””
The question changed his entire face.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“Naomi.””
“Answer.””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
“Yes, I loved you.””
“Then why?””
He looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That if you knew the truth, you would leave.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And you thought lying for eleven years would make me stay?””
“No.””
He swallowed.
“I thought I could protect you.””
“There’s that word again.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“Protect.””
My eyes burned.
“You all keep using it like it gives you permission.””
His face fell.
“You’re right.””
I looked away.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I should have trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“I should never have let you build a life with someone you didn’t fully know.””
The honesty hurt.
Because I believed him.
And I hated that.
“Tell me everything.””
He nodded.
“I will.””
He sat down.
For the first time, he looked exhausted.
Not like a criminal hiding.
Like a man who had been running for too long.
“My father, Victor Whitmore, controlled everything in our family.””
He paused.
“He wasn’t just wealthy. He was powerful because people were afraid of him.””
I listened.
“Claire tried to expose him.””
Claire looked down.
“And my father helped.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Victor think I was involved?””
“Because I found evidence against him.””
“What evidence?””
“A financial record.””
He looked toward the folder.
“The one Daniel gave you.””
I frowned.
“That folder is about your father.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Daniel bring it to me?””
Adrian’s face changed.
“He wasn’t supposed to.””
“What?””
“Daniel works for someone else now.””
The room went cold.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“Victor.””
My stomach dropped.
“But he helped me.””
“He wanted you to find the documents.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted you angry enough to come looking for answers.””
I stared.
“Why would he want that?””
Adrian hesitated.
Then said:
“Because the documents are incomplete.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means the truth is hidden somewhere else.””
“Where?””
His eyes met mine.
“With your father.””
I frowned.
“My father is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then where?””
Adrian looked toward Emma’s room.
Then back at me.
“Naomi…”
The way he said my name scared me.
“What?””
“Your father didn’t just leave behind memories.””
I waited.
“He left something for you.””
My heart started pounding.
“What?””
Adrian reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small key.
Old.
Rusty.
Worn.
I stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your father gave it to me the night before he died.””
My breath caught.
“You had this?””
“Yes.””
“For six years?””
He nodded.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Because he told me not to give it to you unless Victor found you.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the key.
At the man holding it.
At the life I thought I understood.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
My house.
Taken from across the street.
Then another image.
Emma’s bedroom window.
My blood turned cold.
A final message appeared.
*You have something that belongs to me. Bring it to the old Whitmore building tonight, or your daughter learns what her father really did.*
I looked up.
Adrian had seen my face change.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because for the first time, I understood something.
Victor wasn’t chasing Adrian.
He wasn’t chasing the documents.
He wasn’t chasing revenge.
May you like
He was chasing me.
And he knew exactly where to hurt me.
