Chapter 3: The Secret Inside Maria’s Phone

The message remained glowing on the screen.

*“Daniel, if you’re seeing this, it means Vanessa found out I kept the evidence.””*

I read it again.

Then again.

My mind refused to process the words.

Maria.

Evidence.

Found out.

Behind me, Vanessa made a small sound.

Not a gasp.

Not a cry.

Something closer to defeat.

I slowly turned around.

She was standing near the hallway, one hand pressed against her chest.

“Daniel…”

I held up the phone.

“What is this?””

Her eyes moved from the phone to my face.

“I can explain.””

Those four words.

I hated those four words.

Because they were what people said when the truth was already too ugly to say out loud.

“Explain what?””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

“What evidence did Maria have?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You just said you could explain.””

“I can explain what happened today.””

“Then explain.””

She didn’t move.

The silence stretched between us.

Outside, the Miami rain began tapping against the glass doors.

A strange sound.

Soft.

Almost peaceful.

But inside that house, everything was breaking.

“Where is Maria?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“She left.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“You fired her.””

Her jaw tightened.

“She tried to accuse me.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“She tried to prove she was telling the truth.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You don’t know that.””

“I know she saved our son.””

“And I know she could have caused this.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Daniel, you’re acting like you already decided I’m guilty.””

“I’m acting like I saw a video of you pulling our son’s stroller toward the pool.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I told you. I don’t remember.””

“And now Maria has evidence?””

“I don’t know what she means.””

I looked back at the phone.

The message was still open.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

There was no password.

No lock.

Maria wanted me to see it.

I opened the conversation.

There were only three messages.

The first was sent two days earlier.

*Maria: I know what you did. Please don’t make me tell Daniel.*

My stomach dropped.

The second message came from Vanessa’s number.

*Vanessa: You have no idea what you’re talking about. Stay out of my family.*

The third was Maria’s final message.

*Maria: I protected Noah once. I won’t let you hurt him again.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was watching my face.

She knew.

She knew I had seen everything.

“What is this?”” I asked.

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling you the truth!””

Her voice cracked.

“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””

I walked toward the couch and sat down.

My legs suddenly felt weak.

For years, I had believed my marriage was the one place where I was safe.

Now I was sitting in my own living room, holding a stranger’s phone, wondering if my wife had been hiding an entire life from me.

“Who is Noah’s nanny?”” I asked quietly.

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“Who is the person who watches our son every day?””

“Daniel…”

“Answer me.””

She went silent.

“Maria.””

“And who knows his schedule?””

Her expression changed.

“Everyone in this house.””

“Exactly.””

I looked at the phone.

“Someone knew when he would be outside.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re making this worse.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I’m trying to understand.””

She wiped her tears.

“Do you know how humiliating this is?””

I almost laughed.

“Humiliating?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re looking at me like I’m a monster.””

“I’m looking at you like my wife.””

“That’s worse.””

The words surprised me.

“What does that mean?””

She looked away.

“Because you’re supposed to believe me.””

I stared at her.

“Belief doesn’t mean ignoring what I saw.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then the baby monitor on the table crackled.

Both of us turned.

Noah.

A small cry came through the speaker.

The sound instantly changed everything.

I ran upstairs.

Vanessa followed behind me.

Our son was standing in his crib, holding the side rail with his tiny hands.

His cheeks were wet.

I lifted him immediately.

“Hey, buddy.””

He grabbed my shirt.

Holding him felt like holding the only thing in my life that still made sense.

Vanessa stood beside me.

“I love him.””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I looked at her.

“I know.””

“No, Daniel.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t.””

She reached toward Noah.

“I would die for him.””

I watched her hand stop halfway.

For a second, I saw the woman I married.

The woman who cried when we found out she was pregnant.

The woman who painted the nursery herself.

The woman who slept beside Noah’s crib when he had nightmares.

But then I remembered the video.

The stroller moving.

Maria’s message.

The lies.

“I need the truth,” I said.

Vanessa lowered her hand.

“I know.””

“Then help me find it.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Maria said she had evidence.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Daniel…”

“We need to talk to her.””

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

I noticed.

“Why not?””

“She’s lying.””

“Then prove it.””

“She’ll manipulate you.””

“Then I’ll decide that myself.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand who Maria really is.””

“Then tell me.””

She opened her mouth.

Stopped.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered:

“She wasn’t just our housekeeper.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward Noah.

Then back at me.

“She had another reason for coming into this house.””

My grip tightened around my son.

“What reason?””

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

Maria.

“Sir?””

I stood up.

“Maria, where are you?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“Why did you leave that phone?””

A pause.

“Because I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me carefully.

“What evidence do you have?””

Maria’s breathing changed.

“Sir, before I tell you anything, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“I didn’t come to your house to work.””

The room felt colder.

“What are you saying?””

“I came because of Vanessa.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Maria said the words that changed everything.

“Because three years ago, your wife destroyed my family.””

I couldn’t speak.

Beside me, Vanessa’s face went completely white.

“Daniel,” Maria whispered.

“You need to know what happened before Noah was born.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was no longer crying.

She was no longer pretending.

She looked terrified.

“Maria,” I said slowly.

“What are you talking about?””

The line went silent.

Then Maria answered.

“The baby Vanessa told you she lost before Noah…”

My breath caught.

“She didn’t lose him, Daniel.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

Maria’s voice trembled.

“She lied about everything.””

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

“Your son wasn’t the first baby she was supposed to have.””

I looked down at Noah.

At my little boy.

At the child I had loved since the moment I saw him.

And for the first time in my life…

I wondered if I truly knew who his mother was.
