Chapter 8: The Man Who Left a Message
The name on the back of the photograph stared at me.
*Ethan Walker.*
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Maria.
Not Vanessa.
The silence was so heavy that I could hear the rain hitting the garage roof.
Slowly, I turned the photograph over.
It showed a hospital hallway.
A blurry image.
A person standing near a door.
At first, I couldn’t understand why this picture mattered.
Then I looked closer.
The person in the photograph was a man.
Holding a folder.
Looking directly at the camera.
And beneath the image was a date.
The same day Noah was born.
My fingers tightened.
“Ethan was there?””
Maria nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa shook her head immediately.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped back.
“No, that’s impossible.””
“Why?”” I asked.
Her eyes moved to the photograph.
“Because Ethan died before that.””
Maria’s expression hardened.
“That’s what you wanted everyone to believe.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Don’t I?””
The tension between them felt like a wire about to snap.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me the truth.””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
But firm.
“I am done hearing half-truths.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“Ethan wasn’t dead.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I stared at her.
“What?””
Maria looked shocked too.
Even she hadn’t expected that.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“He disappeared.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“Before Noah?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“So everyone thought he died?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her hands shook.
“Because that’s what I told them.””
The room went completely silent.
I felt something inside me break.
“You lied about his death?””
“I was scared.””
“You keep saying that.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because it’s true.””
“No, Vanessa.””
I shook my head.
“Fear explains a mistake. It doesn’t explain years of deception.””
She looked down.
“You’re right.””
For once, she didn’t argue.
That made it worse.
“Where is he now?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Maria stepped closer.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“But you found this.””
Maria nodded.
“I found it hidden inside the old records.””
“What records?””
“The clinic’s backup files.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“How did you get them?””
Maria hesitated.
“I had help.””
“From who?””
She looked at the photograph.
“Ethan.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He contacted me.””
Vanessa stood.
“When?””
Maria looked at her.
“Three months ago.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“You talked to him?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
Maria didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Maria.””
She looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“Then how did you talk to him?””
She lowered her voice.
“Messages.””
“What kind of messages?””
“Encrypted ones.””
I almost laughed.
“This sounds like a movie.””
“I know.””
“But it’s my life.””
Maria nodded sadly.
“I know.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know he was alive?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“I knew he might be.””
The anger came instantly.
“Might be?””
She stepped closer.
“Daniel, you don’t understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
She looked at Maria.
Then back at me.
“Ethan wasn’t the same person anymore.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means he blamed me.””
“For what?””
Vanessa’s voice became smaller.
“For everything.””
I stared.
“You deserved blame.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Vanessa flinched.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I know.””
She wiped her tears.
“Ethan found out what happened at the clinic.””
“What happened?””
She looked at Maria.
Then at me.
“The records weren’t accidentally switched.””
Maria went still.
“What?””
I looked between them.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Someone changed them.””
The garage suddenly felt cold.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Maria stepped forward.
“You do.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“No.””
“You do.””
Their eyes locked.
And I realized something.
They weren’t fighting about the past.
They were both afraid of the same person.
“Who?”” I asked again.
Neither answered.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Dr. Adrian Cole.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who is that?””
“The doctor who ran the fertility clinic.””
Maria’s face changed.
“He was supposed to be retired.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He disappeared after the investigation.””
“What investigation?””
Maria looked at me.
“The clinic had other cases.””
I frowned.
“What kind of cases?””
She hesitated.
“Records being altered.””
My stomach tightened.
“How many?””
“We don’t know.””
“Why?””
“Because the files disappeared.””
I looked at the photograph.
Ethan.
The clinic.
The baby.
The lies.
Everything was connected.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Stop searching.*
My blood ran cold.
Another message appeared.
*You have already lost enough. Don’t lose Noah too.*
I showed them.
Maria immediately looked around.
“He knows we’re here.””
Vanessa’s face turned white.
“No.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“He found you.””
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Ethan.””
I stared.
“Why would Ethan threaten me?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He wouldn’t.””
“Then who?””
Nobody answered.
A third message appeared.
This time, there was a photo.
My heart stopped.
It was taken outside my house.
A picture of Noah’s bedroom window.
Taken tonight.
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
Someone had been watching my son.
Maria covered her mouth.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No…”
I looked at both women.
“Who has access to my house?””
No answer.
Then Maria spoke quietly.
“Someone who knew where Noah was.””
I walked out of the garage immediately.
“Daniel.””
I ignored Vanessa.
I ran upstairs.
The hallway was dark.
The nursery door was open.
My heart was pounding.
“Noah?””
No answer.
I rushed inside.
The crib was empty.
For one second, my entire world stopped.
Then I heard a sound.
A soft laugh.
I turned.
Noah was in the rocking chair.
In Vanessa’s arms.
I froze.
She was crying.
Holding him tightly.
“I found him.””
I stared.
“What happened?””
She looked at me.
“He woke up.””
“Why was he not in his crib?””
She didn’t answer.
My eyes moved to the window.
It was open.
The curtain moved in the wind.
Maria ran into the room behind me.
“Daniel…”
She stopped.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She pointed toward the floor.
Near the window.
A small object lay on the carpet.
I picked it up.
A hospital bracelet.
Old.
Faded.
The name was almost unreadable.
But I could still make it out.
*Noah Walker.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She was shaking.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, no warning.
No threat.
Just four words.
*Ask Vanessa about Ethan’s last night.*
I looked at my wife.
And I knew.
