Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in the Records

The photograph stayed on the table between us.

I couldn’t touch it.

I couldn’t look away.

A baby.

A tiny face.

A pair of dark eyes staring into the camera.

And behind that photograph was a possibility so terrifying that my mind kept rejecting it.

Noah.

My son.

The child I had held in my arms every night.

The child whose first steps I recorded.

The child whose heartbeat I listened to during every doctor’s appointment.

The child whose name I whispered when he cried.

Could he really be someone else’s?

I pushed the photograph away.

“No.””

Maria’s expression softened.

“Sir…”

“No.””

I stood up so quickly that the chair scraped against the floor.

“This is not possible.””

People in the coffee shop turned to look at me.

I lowered my voice.

“You’re telling me my wife stole a child?””

Maria shook her head.

“No.””

“Then what are you telling me?””

She looked down.

“I’m telling you Vanessa hid the truth.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Maria was silent.

That silence angered me more than an answer would have.

“Why would she do that?””

“She was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Maria looked at the photograph.

“Of losing everything.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Her solution was to lie to me for years?””

“She thought she could fix it.””

“Fix it?””

My voice cracked.

“She built our entire marriage on a lie.””

Maria didn’t argue.

Because she knew I was right.

I picked up the folder.

“Where did you get these?””

“From Ethan’s family.””

I froze.

“You still know them?””

Maria nodded.

“I never stopped trying to find out what happened.””

“Why?””

Her eyes became distant.

“Because I was there when he was born.””

The way she said it made me sit back down.

“Tell me everything.””

Maria took a deep breath.

“Three years before Noah was born, Vanessa was with Ethan Walker.””

I looked at the papers.

“She was engaged to him?””

“No.””

“Dating?””

Maria shook her head.

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Ethan loved her more than she loved him.””

I frowned.

“Then why was she with him?””

Maria looked uncomfortable.

“Because Ethan had money.””

The words landed heavily.

I looked at the photograph again.

“And the baby?””

“His name was Noah.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Same name?””

Maria nodded.

“That’s why I knew something was wrong when you told me your son’s name.””

The room felt colder.

“You’re saying Vanessa named our son after him?””

“I’m saying I don’t know.””

I looked at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to ask questions.””

That answer stopped me.

Because she wasn’t trying to make me hate Vanessa.

She was trying to make me look closer.

“What happened after the baby was born?””

Maria folded her hands.

“Ethan was happy.””

She smiled sadly.

“He thought having a son would change everything.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She struggled.””

“With being a mother?””

Maria nodded.

“She felt trapped.””

My stomach twisted.

“She told Ethan she needed time.””

“And?””

“She left.””

“Just like that?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the documents.

“What about the baby?””

Maria’s voice became quiet.

“That was the part nobody understood.””

“What do you mean?””

“She didn’t take him.””

I stared at her.

“She abandoned him?””

Maria didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

My fingers tightened around the folder.

“How could someone do that?””

Maria looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I wanted to disagree.

I wanted to defend my wife.

But I couldn’t.

Not after the pool.

Not after the lies.

“Where was Ethan?””

“Searching for her.””

“For how long?””

“Months.””

“And he never found her?””

Maria shook her head.

“Not until it was too late.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the table.

“Ethan died.””

I froze.

“When?””

“Two years after the baby disappeared.””

The words sat between us.

A dead man.

A hidden child.

A secret my wife carried into our marriage.

“How did he die?””

Maria looked uncomfortable.

“There are questions about that.””

“What questions?””

She hesitated.

“Ethan’s family believed he was trying to expose Vanessa.””

I stared at her.

“You think she had something to do with his death?””

Maria immediately shook her head.

“I’m not saying that.””

“Then why mention it?””

“Because the last person Ethan spoke to before he disappeared…”

She paused.

“Was Vanessa.””

My hands went cold.

I looked through the window.

People walked along the beach.

Laughing.

Living normal lives.

Meanwhile, my entire reality was collapsing.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””

Maria looked down.

“Because I needed proof.””

“And you worked in my house for two years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes met mine.

“To protect Noah.””

I stared at her.

“You’re saying you knew?””

“I suspected.””

“That Vanessa was lying?””

Maria nodded.

“I saw things.””

“What things?””

She looked away.

“Things a mother shouldn’t do.””

The words disturbed me.

“Like what?””

Maria’s fingers tightened.

“The way she reacted when Noah cried.””

I said nothing.

“She wasn’t always cruel.””

Maria’s voice softened.

“That’s what makes it complicated.””

She looked at me.

“Vanessa loved him.””

I felt a strange relief hearing that.

Then Maria continued.

“But sometimes love isn’t enough.””

I looked down.

At the photo.

At the baby who looked like my son.

“What happened to Ethan’s baby?””

Maria took out another document.

“This is the part you need to see.””

I unfolded it.

My eyes moved over the page.

A hospital record.

A patient name.

A child.

Then a line that made my heart stop.

*Temporary guardianship transfer.*

I looked at Maria.

“What is this?””

“After Vanessa left, Ethan’s sister took custody.””

“Then how did Vanessa get him?””

Maria shook her head.

“She didn’t.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“Daniel…”

She leaned closer.

“The baby Ethan’s family raised was not the baby who came home with Vanessa.””

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

Maria pointed to the document.

“Look at the date.””

I did.

The date.

The location.

The hospital.

Something didn’t match.

My mind raced.

“Two babies?””

Maria nodded slowly.

“That’s what I believe.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“No.””

“I know it sounds impossible.””

“Then explain.””

Maria opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, she picked up.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then her face turned pale.

“Where?””

She stood.

“What happened?””

She ended the call.

I grabbed her arm.

“Maria.””

She looked at me.

“It’s Ethan’s sister.””

“Why did she call?””

Maria swallowed.

“She found something.””

“What?””

Her eyes moved toward the folder.

“Something Vanessa never wanted anyone to see.””

My heart started pounding.

“Where is she?””

Maria grabbed her coat.

“We need to go.””

“Now?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Maria looked at me.

Because I had never seen fear like that in her eyes.

“Because if Vanessa knows we found this…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Maria whispered:

“She’ll destroy the last piece of evidence.””

I stood.

“What evidence?””

Maria looked toward the door.

“The one that proves what really happened the day Noah was born.””

When I arrived home two hours later, Vanessa was gone.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

I searched every room.

No Vanessa.

No message.

No explanation.

Then I saw something on the kitchen counter.

A white envelope.

My name was written on it.

*Daniel.*

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was one piece of paper.

A printed email.

From an unknown sender.

The first line made my blood freeze.

*“You need to know the truth about your son.””*

I kept reading.

May you like

And the final sentence destroyed whatever hope I had left.

*“Noah is not the child Vanessa gave birth to.””*
