Chapter 6: The Boy Who Was Never Hers

The paper slipped from my hand.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the air conditioner.

Not the traffic outside.

Not even my own breathing.

Just one sentence repeating inside my head.

*Noah is not the child Vanessa gave birth to.*

I picked up the paper again.

Maybe I had read it wrong.

Maybe my mind was filling in words that weren’t there.

But the sentence remained.

Clear.

Cruel.

Impossible.

I looked around the kitchen.

The same kitchen where Vanessa and I had celebrated birthdays.

The same kitchen where she had announced she was pregnant.

The same kitchen where she had cried tears of joy when we heard Noah’s heartbeat for the first time.

How many of those moments had been real?

My phone rang.

I jumped.

Unknown number.

For one second, I thought it was Vanessa.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Richard Walker.””

The name stopped me.

Walker.

Ethan Walker.

I gripped the phone.

“Are you related to Ethan?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

My heart began racing.

“Who are you?””

“I’m Ethan’s older brother.””

I looked at the paper on the counter.

“Why are you contacting me?””

“Because you finally know enough to ask the right questions.””

The anger came before the fear.

“You knew?””

Richard sighed.

“I knew Vanessa was hiding something.””

“You knew she had a child?””

“Yes.””

My jaw tightened.

“And nobody told me?””

“We tried.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

“We tried to contact you.””

I looked toward the front door.

“What are you talking about?””

“Daniel, before Maria worked for you, before she ever entered your home, we found out Vanessa had married you.””

My stomach turned.

“And?””

“We sent letters.””

“I never got any letters.””

“I know.””

The silence that followed felt heavy.

“Why?””

“Because someone made sure you didn’t.””

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa.

The thought came instantly.

But I didn’t want to believe it.

“Where are you?””

Richard gave me an address.

A quiet neighborhood thirty minutes away.

“Come alone.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa knows we’re talking, she’ll disappear.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then at the stairs.

Upstairs was Noah.

Sleeping peacefully.

My son.

The only thing I was certain about.

Or at least I thought I was.

Richard Walker lived in a small brick house surrounded by old oak trees.

Nothing about the place looked connected to a family secret.

That almost made it worse.

A normal house.

A normal street.

A normal life destroyed by something nobody wanted to discuss.

When I knocked, the door opened almost immediately.

A man in his late fifties stood there.

His eyes were tired.

But they were familiar.

The same eyes from the photograph.

The same eyes from the baby.

“Daniel.””

I nodded.

“Richard?””

He stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The living room was filled with photographs.

A family.

Children.

Vacations.

And on the wall above the fireplace was a picture of Ethan.

I stopped.

I had never met the man.

But somehow, I felt like I knew him.

Because his life had become part of mine without my permission.

“He would have liked you.””

Richard’s voice surprised me.

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Ethan.””

He looked at the photograph.

“He always believed people deserved the truth.””

I sat down.

“I need answers.””

“I know.””

“Did Vanessa have a child before me?””

“Yes.””

“Did she give him away?””

Richard’s face hardened.

“She left him.””

The words were painful.

“Why?””

Richard sat across from me.

“That’s the question we spent years trying to answer.””

“What did you find?””

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he stood and walked to a cabinet.

He removed a small box.

“This belonged to Ethan.””

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Letters.

He handed me one.

I unfolded it.

The handwriting was messy.

Emotional.

*Vanessa, please let me see my son. I don’t understand why you won’t answer me.*

My chest tightened.

Another letter.

*You said you needed time. It has been six months. He is our child. Please don’t take him away from me.*

I looked up.

“She ignored him?””

Richard nodded.

“For almost a year.””

“Then what happened?””

“She came back.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“She came back?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Shortly before Ethan died.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did she want?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“The baby.””

I said nothing.

“She told Ethan she had changed.””

“And he believed her?””

“He wanted to.””

Richard looked down.

“That was his mistake.””

I looked through the papers.

“What happened to the child?””

Richard’s expression became painful.

“We don’t know.””

My head snapped up.

“What?””

“Ethan died before he could tell us everything.””

“How?””

Richard hesitated.

“Officially?””

“Yes.””

“A car accident.””

“And unofficially?””

Richard looked toward the window.

“Ethan was terrified before he died.””

“Of Vanessa?””

Richard didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I stood.

“This is insane.””

“I know.””

“My wife is not some criminal mastermind.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Maybe not.””

His calm response bothered me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means people don’t have to be monsters to make terrible choices.””

I thought about Vanessa crying.

About her saying she was scared.

About her saying she didn’t remember.

Richard continued.

“The day Ethan died, he sent me one message.””

“What did it say?””

Richard reached into the box.

He pulled out his phone.

A screenshot.

The message was short.

*If anything happens to me, find Daniel Carter. He needs to know what Vanessa did.*

My blood ran cold.

“Why didn’t you find me?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“We tried.””

“What happened?””

“The messages failed.””

“Why?””

“Because we were blocked.””

“By who?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your wife.””

I stood frozen.

When I returned home, the lights were off.

I checked my phone.

No messages from Vanessa.

No calls.

Nothing.

I walked upstairs.

Noah was awake.

He looked at me from his crib and smiled.

That smile almost destroyed me.

I picked him up.

His tiny arms wrapped around my neck.

And suddenly, none of the documents mattered.

None of the secrets.

Because he was still Noah.

He was still the baby who called me Dad in his own little way.

The baby who reached for me when he was scared.

I carried him downstairs.

Then I heard something.

A sound from the garage.

I froze.

Someone was inside.

I placed Noah safely in his playpen.

Then I grabbed the baseball bat near the door.

Slowly, I walked toward the garage.

The door was half open.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

I pushed it open.

And stopped.

Vanessa stood inside.

Her face was pale.

She was holding a bag.

“What are you doing?””

She looked at the bat in my hand.

Then at me.

“Daniel…”

“What’s in the bag?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Where were you?””

“I needed to think.””

“You disappeared.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You.””

I almost laughed.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Because I knew you would hate me when you found out.””

My grip tightened.

“Found out what?””

She looked down.

Then slowly opened the bag.

Inside were old documents.

A hospital bracelet.

And a photograph.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized the bracelet.

The same hospital.

The same date.

The same name.

But the name printed on it wasn’t Noah.

It was another name.

A name I had never heard before.

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

Her voice broke.

“You need to understand something.””

I stared at the bracelet.

“What?””

She looked up.

And finally said the words she had been hiding for years.

“Noah was never supposed to be my son.””

I couldn’t move.

“Then whose son was he?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

May you like

And whispered:

“Maria’s.””
