Chapter 7: The Mother Who Gave Him Away
The garage suddenly felt smaller.
The walls seemed to move closer.
The air felt impossible to breathe.
I stared at Vanessa.
Waiting.
Waiting for her to laugh.
Waiting for her to tell me this was another misunderstanding.
But she didn’t.
She just stood there, holding the bag of documents, looking like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
“Say that again.””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Say exactly what you just said.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Noah was Maria’s son.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed everything.
I looked toward the house.
Toward the room where Noah was sleeping.
My son.
The baby I had raised.
The child who knew my voice.
The child who reached for me.
Then I looked back at Vanessa.
“Explain.””
She sat down on the old workbench.
Her hands were shaking.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“I know.””
“Then start talking.””
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Before I met you, I was a different person.””
I almost smiled.
“A different person?””
“Yes.””
“You mean someone who lies?””
Her eyes closed.
“I deserve that.””
“No, Vanessa.””
My voice hardened.
“I need the truth.””
She nodded.
“I worked at a private clinic.””
I frowned.
“What kind of clinic?””
“A fertility clinic.””
The answer surprised me.
“And Maria?””
“She worked there too.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“You knew her before she came into our house.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at me.
“Of you finding out what happened.””
I waited.
“Maria was pregnant.””
My heart pounded.
“With Noah?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I gripped the edge of the workbench.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked down.
“It means I knew Maria was pregnant before she did.””
I stared.
“What?””
She wiped her tears.
“I was the clinic coordinator. I had access to the records.””
The silence was unbearable.
“And?””
“And there was a mistake.””
“What kind of mistake?””
She looked away.
“One that changed all of our lives.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Daniel…”
“No. Don’t give me vague answers anymore.””
My voice rose.
“I need to understand.””
Vanessa nodded.
“The clinic had two patients with similar information.””
She swallowed.
“One was me.””
“The other was Maria.””
I felt a cold sensation run through my body.
“What happened?””
“The records were mixed.””
I stared at her.
“You’re saying the clinic gave you Maria’s baby?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“Not exactly.””
“Then what?””
She looked at me.
“Maria gave birth first.””
My chest tightened.
“Then?””
“Her baby was sick.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with you?””
“Everything.””
She looked at the floor.
“Maria couldn’t afford the treatment.””
I said nothing.
“Her husband had left her. She had no family nearby. She was alone.””
“And you?””
“I had money.””
The way she said it made me uncomfortable.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa’s voice became smaller.
“I offered to help.””
I stared.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“I thought I could save him.””
A strange silence followed.
“You thought?””
She nodded.
“I was desperate to become a mother.””
The words hit me.
Because I remembered.
I remembered Vanessa crying after every negative pregnancy test.
I remembered the nights she sat alone in the bathroom.
I remembered how badly she wanted a child.
“I thought if I helped Maria…”
She stopped.
“Then what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I thought she would let me be part of his life.””
My heart sank.
“Part of his life?””
“Yes.””
“But she was his mother.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you say he was yours?””
Tears streamed down her face.
“Because something happened.””
“What?””
She looked toward the house.
“Maria disappeared.””
I froze.
“What?””
“After Noah’s birth.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“It’s the truth.””
She shook her head.
“She left the hospital.””
“Without her baby?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
The same words.
Again.
And somehow, they felt less believable every time.
“Where did you get custody?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I didn’t.””
The answer shocked me.
“What?””
“I wasn’t his legal mother.””
“Then how did I become his father?””
Her face crumpled.
“Because I made it happen.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
“I changed the records.””
The garage went silent.
I stared at her.
“You forged documents?””
She nodded.
“I was terrified.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were selfish.””
She didn’t fight me.
“I know.””
“You stole someone’s child.””
Her tears fell faster.
“I know.””
The anger inside me was overwhelming.
But underneath the anger was something else.
Confusion.
Because this wasn’t the story I expected.
I thought Vanessa was hiding because she had done something evil.
But now I was hearing something worse.
She had done something desperate.
Something unforgivable.
Something she had spent years trying to bury.
“Why keep Maria in the house?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“What?””
“You hired her.””
A painful expression crossed her face.
“I needed to know where she was.””
“So you could control her?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
She looked away.
“Because I knew one day she would come looking for Noah.””
I stared.
“And she did.””
“Yes.””
“And you tried to make me believe she was dangerous.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I already knew.
The pool.
The accusation.
Everything.
“You pushed the stroller.””
Her face changed.
“I…”
“Didn’t you?””
She looked down.
“I don’t remember.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was broken.
“Still?””
“Daniel, please.””
“You keep saying you don’t remember.””
She whispered:
“Because I don’t.””
I studied her.
“Then why?””
She looked terrified.
“Because I was trying to scare Maria.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I didn’t think it would happen.””
“You moved our son toward a pool.””
“I thought the alarm would go off.””
“The alarm?””
She nodded quickly.
“The stroller had a safety system.””
I stared.
“Then why didn’t it?””
Her face changed.
Confusion.
Real confusion.
“I don’t know.””
A horrible thought entered my mind.
“What if Maria hadn’t been there?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I know.””
“What if I hadn’t come home early?””
“I know.””
“What if Noah had fallen?””
She covered her face.
“I know!””
The scream echoed through the garage.
For the first time, she wasn’t defending herself.
She was breaking.
But I couldn’t comfort her.
Not anymore.
A sound came from behind us.
A quiet voice.
“Because she knew I would be there.””
We both froze.
I turned.
Maria stood in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
She had heard everything.
Vanessa stood immediately.
“How long have you been there?””
Maria looked at her.
“Long enough.””
The two women stared at each other.
Years of secrets.
Years of pain.
Standing in one room.
Maria looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Daniel.””
I swallowed.
“Why did you leave your baby?””
Her face collapsed.
“I didn’t.””
The answer was immediate.
“What?””
Maria stepped forward.
“I never left Noah.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Don’t.””
Maria ignored her.
“I was told my baby died.””
I felt the room spin.
“What?””
Maria’s eyes filled with tears.
“The clinic told me my son didn’t survive.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Maria.
“No.””
Maria nodded.
“Yes.””
She took a deep breath.
“And I believed them.””
My heart pounded.
“Then how did you find out?””
Maria looked at Vanessa.
“Because years later, I saw a picture.””
She looked at me.
“Your family Christmas card.””
A tear slipped down her face.
“I saw my son smiling in your arms.””
The silence was devastating.
“I spent two years trying to get close enough to know if I was right.””
She looked at Noah’s room.
“I wasn’t trying to take him from you.””
Her voice broke.
“I just wanted my baby to know I never abandoned him.””
I couldn’t speak.
Then Maria reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this yesterday.””
She handed it to me.
“What is it?””
Her eyes moved to Vanessa.
“Something that proves the clinic mistake wasn’t an accident.””
My fingers tightened around the envelope.
“Who did it?””
Maria’s answer was barely a whisper.
“The person who changed both of our lives.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one photograph.
And on the back was a handwritten name.
A name I recognized.
A name that made Vanessa’s face lose all color.
May you like
Because it belonged to someone who was supposed to have been dead for years.
*Ethan Walker.*
