Chapter 1: The Door I Should Have Never Opened
Elise had spent six months trying to convince herself that the little voice inside her head was the problem.
She thought she was insecure. She thought she was damaged from old wounds. She thought the woman sitting across from her every Thursday morning, gently reminding her to “choose trust over fear,” actually wanted to save her marriage.
She was wrong.
The day Elise opened her bedroom door expecting to find her husband alone, she found Reid with another woman.
And the woman standing beside their bed was the last person Elise expected to see.
Reid froze with one hand on the buttons of his shirt.
The blonde woman beside him stopped pulling her dress over her shoulders.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The only sound in the room was the rain tapping against the window and the small, broken gasp that escaped Elise’s throat.
Then the woman turned around.
Elise felt the floor disappear beneath her.
“Dr. Keller?””
The name came out like a question, but Elise already knew the answer.
Dr. Vanessa Keller.
Her marriage counselor.
The woman who had held Elise’s hand while she cried about feeling abandoned.
The woman who had looked her straight in the eyes and said, “Elise, suspicion can destroy what love is trying to repair.””
The woman who had told her, over and over again, that Reid deserved the benefit of the doubt.
Reid’s face went pale.
“Elise, wait.””
She laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the sound that came out of her mouth didn’t feel human.
“Wait?”” she whispered.
Her eyes moved between her husband and the woman who had been helping them “heal.””
“Is that what you were going to say when I walked in? Wait?””
“Elise,” Vanessa said quietly.
That made everything worse.
The calm voice.
The professional tone.
The same voice that had guided Elise through every painful conversation about her marriage.
“No,” Elise said, raising a trembling hand.
“Don’t do that.””
Vanessa stopped.
“Don’t use that voice with me.””
Reid stepped forward.
“This isn’t what it looks like.””
Elise looked at him.
A man she had loved for eleven years.
A man whose coffee she made every morning because she knew exactly how he liked it.
A man who kissed her forehead before leaving for work.
A man who had watched her cry in therapy and promised he was committed to rebuilding their relationship.
“You’re standing in our bedroom with our marriage counselor,” Elise said.
“Tell me exactly what this is supposed to look like.””
Reid opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt more than any confession.
Elise walked farther into the room.
She noticed things she wished she hadn’t.
Two wine glasses on the nightstand.
Vanessa’s earrings beside the lamp.
A jacket she had seen before.
A jacket Vanessa wore during their therapy sessions.
“How long?”” Elise asked.
Neither answered.
“How long have you been sleeping with her?””
“Elise—” Reid began.
“How long?””
Her voice cracked.
Vanessa looked away.
That was the moment Elise understood.
Not from Reid.
Not from the evidence.
From Vanessa.
She looked guilty.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Guilty.
Elise remembered every session.
Every time she had described her fears.
Every time she had said, “I think something is wrong.””
Vanessa would tilt her head sympathetically.
“Why do you feel the need to search for betrayal?””
“Have you considered that Reid’s actions may not mean what you think they mean?””
“Trust has to start somewhere.””
Elise’s stomach twisted.
Because Vanessa hadn’t been helping her understand her husband.
She had been protecting him.
“You knew,” Elise whispered.
Vanessa looked up.
“What?””
“You knew I was right.””
The room became silent.
Elise stepped closer.
“You knew.””
“Elise, please—”
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall.
“That’s the part I can’t understand.””
Reid looked ashamed.
Vanessa looked afraid.
“You didn’t just betray me,” Elise said.
“You both watched me question my own sanity.””
The sentence landed harder than a scream.
For months, Elise had wondered if she was becoming paranoid.
If she was too emotional.
If she was ruining her own marriage.
Now she knew.
Someone had been carefully moving the pieces around her.
Making her doubt herself.
Making her apologize.
Making her stay.
Reid reached for her.
She stepped back.
“Don’t touch me.””
“Elise…”
“I need to know one thing.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“How long have you known?””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
But before she could answer, Reid’s phone buzzed on the dresser.
Nobody moved.
The screen lit up.
Elise glanced at it.
A message preview appeared.
Her blood went cold.
Because it wasn’t from Vanessa.
It wasn’t from a stranger.
It was from someone who knew exactly what was happening.
The message said:
*She finally found out. What’s the plan now?*
May you like
And beneath the message was a name Elise recognized.
Her own sister.
