Chapter 6: The Sister Who Knew Too Much

Elise stared at the photo until the screen dimmed.

Then she tapped it again.

The image remained the same.

Reid standing outside a restaurant.

His hand resting on someone’s shoulder.

Someone who was smiling.

Someone Elise had trusted.

Mara.

For a moment, Elise’s mind refused to understand what her eyes were seeing.

Her sister.

Her husband.

Together.

Not arguing.

Not accidentally crossing paths.

Standing close enough to look comfortable.

Like they belonged in the same picture.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“Elise?””

Her own voice sounded distant.

She called Mara.

The phone rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then went to voicemail.

Elise called again.

This time, Mara answered.

“Hello?””

There was fear in her voice.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Elise closed her eyes.

“You know what’s funny?””

A pause.

“Elise…”

“No. Don’t say my name like you’re worried about me.””

“Elise, what happened?””

She looked at the photo.

“You tell me.””

Silence.

A long, painful silence.

Then Mara whispered, “Where did you get that?””

That was the answer.

Not denial.

Not shock.

A question.

Elise felt something break inside her.

“How long?””

Mara didn’t speak.

“How long have you been involved?””

“It’s not what you think.””

Elise laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that right before they explain exactly what I think.””

“I swear to you—”

“No.””

Her voice hardened.

“I spent months believing I was losing my mind.””

“Elise…”

“I defended you.””

The words came out quieter.

“I defended you when people told me something was wrong.””

Mara started crying.

“I never wanted this.””

“But you let it happen.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

Elise walked toward the window.

Rain was falling again.

Just like the night she opened that bedroom door.

“Did Reid tell you he was leaving me?””

Mara said nothing.

“Mara.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“When?””

“Last year.””

Elise closed her eyes.

Last year.

The same answer again.

Everything had started before she knew there was a problem.

“Why?””

Mara’s voice shook.

“He said you didn’t love him anymore.””

Elise stared at the wall.

“And you believed him?””

“I was angry at you.””

The confession landed softly.

Almost worse than screaming.

“Why?””

“Because I thought you were choosing your career over everyone else.””

Elise remembered.

The arguments.

The late nights.

The missed dinners.

The moments she thought were normal marriage struggles.

Mara continued.

“He told me he felt invisible.””

“And you decided to become the person who made him feel seen?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Silence.

Finally:

“I don’t know.””

Elise gripped the phone.

That was the truth she hated most.

Not a dramatic confession.

Not a villain’s speech.

Just someone who made selfish choices and didn’t want to admit what they had done.

“Did you sleep with him?””

Mara stopped breathing.

Elise knew.

She knew before Mara answered.

“No.””

The word came too fast.

“Don’t lie to me again.””

“Elise…”

“Did you?””

Mara whispered:

“Once.””

The world became quiet.

Only once.

That was supposed to make it better.

It didn’t.

“When?””

“Before Reid and Vanessa.””

Elise sat down.

She felt numb.

“How long ago?””

“Almost a year.””

Almost a year.

The same timeline.

The same beginning.

Reid.

Vanessa.

Mara.

A year of secrets.

A year of Elise being the only person who didn’t know the truth about her own life.

“Why did you help him?””

Mara cried.

“Because after it happened, he threatened me.””

Elise frowned.

“What?””

“He said if I told you, he would tell everyone I was the one who came onto him.””

Elise went still.

That sounded exactly like Reid.

Protecting himself.

Destroying anyone who stood in the way.

“Mara.””

“Yes?””

“Did he plan all of this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

Elise’s stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

“He had a plan.””

“What plan?””

Mara hesitated.

“He wanted the house.””

Elise already knew that.

But then Mara said:

“He wanted more than that.””

The room felt colder.

“What else?””

Mara whispered:

“He wanted your inheritance.””

Elise stood.

“What?””

“Your parents’ money.””

Her hand tightened around the phone.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Mara’s voice broke.

“It’s why he married you.””

The sentence destroyed whatever remained.

Elise couldn’t speak.

She couldn’t breathe.

Because suddenly every memory changed.

The first date.

The proposal.

The wedding.

Every “I love you.””

Every promise.

Was it all calculated?

“Why are you telling me now?””

Mara cried harder.

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

“A document.””

“What document?””

“I found it in Reid’s apartment.””

Elise froze.

“Reid has an apartment?””

“Yes.””

The silence that followed felt endless.

Mara continued:

“He’s not staying with Vanessa.””

“Then who is he with?””

Another pause.

“Elise…”

“Who?””

Mara whispered:

“He’s with the person who helped him create the entire plan.””

Elise looked at the photo again.

Her sister.

Her husband.

The missing pieces were finally connecting.

“Who?””

Mara answered.

May you like

And Elise felt every part of her go cold.

“Your mother’s old financial advisor.””
