Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Therapy Room
Elise did not remember driving home.
She remembered the rain.
She remembered gripping the steering wheel so tightly her fingers went numb.
She remembered sitting outside her house for twenty minutes, staring at the front door like it belonged to someone else.
Because the truth was simple.
Her home had never been safe.
Not for months.
Maybe longer.
When Elise finally walked inside, she didn’t cry.
That scared her more than anything.
She placed her keys on the counter.
Removed her coat.
Put her shoes neatly beside the door.
The same routine she had followed every day.
Except now she knew the life she was returning to was built on lies.
Her phone rang.
Reid.
She watched it vibrate.
Once.
Twice.
Five times.
She let it stop.
Then came a message.
*Please talk to me. I can explain.*
Elise stared at those words.
Explain.
People always wanted to explain after they were caught.
Nobody wanted to explain before.
A second message arrived.
*I love you.*
Elise closed her eyes.
She almost laughed again.
Love.
That word had become meaningless.
At 8:17 p.m., someone knocked on the door.
Elise knew who it was before opening it.
Her sister, Mara, stood outside.
The same Mara whose name had appeared on Reid’s phone.
“Elise…”
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
Elise stepped aside.
“Come in.””
Mara walked inside slowly.
“You know?””
Elise looked at her.
That one question answered everything.
Not “What happened?””
Not “Are you okay?””
You know?
“How long?”” Elise asked.
Mara swallowed.
“Elise…”
“How long did you know?””
Mara sat down.
Her silence was enough.
Elise felt something inside her break.
“My own sister.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Protect me?””
Elise’s voice rose.
“You let me sit in that office every week and tell Dr. Keller that I felt crazy.””
Mara started crying.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
“You didn’t know?””
Elise stepped closer.
“You knew enough to keep a secret.””
Mara covered her face.
“I found out three months ago.””
Three months.
Elise stared at her.
Three months ago, she had been celebrating her anniversary.
She remembered that night.
Reid had brought flowers.
He had kissed her.
He had told her they were finally getting better.
And while Elise was believing that, everyone else knew.
“How did you find out?”” Elise asked.
Mara hesitated.
“I saw them together.””
“Where?””
“At a hotel.””
The word hit harder than expected.
A hotel.
Not an accident.
Not one mistake.
A choice.
“How long has it been happening?””
Mara looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“But you know something.””
“Elise…”
“Tell me.””
Mara whispered, “I think it started before therapy.””
The room went silent.
Elise felt dizzy.
Before therapy.
Before Vanessa sat across from her and promised honesty.
Before she cried in front of her.
Before she confessed every fear.
The person who was supposed to help her had been part of the reason she needed help.
The next morning, Elise went to Dr. Keller’s office.
Not as a patient.
Not as a wife trying to save a marriage.
As someone looking for answers.
Vanessa opened the door and immediately froze.
“Elise.””
“I need five minutes.””
“We shouldn’t meet outside scheduled sessions.””
Elise smiled coldly.
“Interesting.””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“You know why I’m here.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“Come in.””
The office looked exactly the same.
The soft lighting.
The plants.
The comfortable chairs.
The place where Elise had confessed her deepest fears.
She sat down.
Vanessa remained standing.
“How long?”” Elise asked.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Elise…”
“How long did you know my husband was cheating?””
Silence.
Then Vanessa said something Elise never expected.
“I knew before you ever became my patient.””
Elise stopped breathing.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Reid came to me first.””
The words echoed.
“He came to you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
May you like
And then she said:
“He wanted my help leaving you.””
