Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in the Papers
Elise spent the next three days collecting pieces of a life she no longer recognized.
Documents.
Messages.
Bank records.
Every discovery felt like finding another crack in a foundation she thought was solid.
Reid had not simply fallen into an affair.
He had been preparing an exit.
The house.
The money.
The story he would tell everyone.
A story where Elise became the reason the marriage failed.
On Friday morning, Elise met with a lawyer.
Not to destroy Reid.
Not yet.
To understand.
The lawyer, Daniel Brooks, studied the documents carefully.
“You need to understand something,” he said.
“What?””
“This wasn’t an emotional decision.””
Elise looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
“Your husband made financial arrangements months ago.””
“How many months?””
Daniel turned the paper toward her.
“Almost a year.””
Elise stared.
A year.
Before therapy.
Before the arguments.
Before the suspicious behavior.
Before she ever questioned him.
He had already planned a different life.
“Why?”” she whispered.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because someone convinced him he could.””
The words stayed with her.
Someone.
Not something.
Someone.
That evening, Elise returned home.
The house felt different.
Not because anything had changed.
Because she had.
She walked upstairs.
Opened the bedroom door.
The same door that had destroyed her life days earlier.
Inside, everything looked untouched.
Reid’s side of the closet was empty.
His photographs were gone.
But on her nightstand was an envelope.
No name.
No explanation.
Just her handwriting.
Elise frowned.
She had never written it.
Inside was a single page.
The words made her blood run cold.
*Elise, if you’re reading this, Reid knows I found out.*
She read the sentence again.
Then the signature.
Her hands started shaking.
Because the letter was from Vanessa.
And it was dated two weeks before Elise caught them.
The letter continued:
*I should have told you sooner. I tried. But Reid threatened to destroy my career and reveal everything about us.*
Elise stopped.
Everything about us.
She kept reading.
*There is one thing you don’t know. Reid was never trying to leave you for me.*
Her heartbeat quickened.
The next line was underlined.
*He was trying to leave you because of someone else.*
Elise looked toward the bedroom door.
The house suddenly felt too quiet.
She grabbed her phone and called Vanessa.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Then a message appeared.
Not from Vanessa.
From an unknown number.
*Stop looking for answers, Elise. You won’t like what you find.*
She stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
A photo.
Her breath caught.
It was a picture of Reid.
Standing beside someone.
Someone she knew.
Someone who had been in her life every day.
