Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Plan
Elise drove to the address Mara gave her.
She didn’t tell anyone.
Not Daniel.
Not the police.
Not even Mara.
Because she had learned something important.
Secrets survived when they knew they were being chased.
So Elise stopped chasing.
She started watching.
The apartment building was newer than she expected.
Luxury.
Private entrance.
The kind of place someone rented when they wanted privacy.
Not a home.
A hiding place.
Elise sat across the street for nearly an hour.
Then she saw him.
Reid.
Walking out.
No sadness.
No guilt.
No hesitation.
He looked calm.
That hurt.
Because Elise had spent days barely holding herself together while he moved through the world like nothing had happened.
Then another man appeared.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Elise recognized him immediately.
Thomas Voss.
Her mother’s financial advisor.
The man who had managed her family’s investments after her parents died.
The man who had sat beside Elise during the funeral and told her:
“Your parents built a future for you.””
She watched him shake Reid’s hand.
Not a casual greeting.
A business agreement.
Elise took photos.
Then she followed them.
They entered a restaurant.
She waited five minutes.
Then walked inside.
The hostess looked up.
“Do you have a reservation?””
“No.””
Elise scanned the room.
Reid sat with Thomas in a private corner.
When Reid saw her, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Leave,” he said.
Elise smiled.
“Interesting.””
Thomas stood.
“This is a private conversation.””
“So was my marriage.””
Reid looked angry.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“I understand more than I did yesterday.””
Thomas studied her.
“Elise, you should be careful.””
That sentence made her laugh.
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
“Because it sounds like one.””
Reid leaned forward.
“You need to stop digging.””
“Why?””
“Because you’re hurting yourself.””
Elise stared at him.
“No.””
Her voice became quiet.
“You’re afraid because I’m finally seeing you clearly.””
The table went silent.
Thomas looked at Reid.
A small movement.
A warning.
Elise noticed.
“Did he tell you everything?””
Thomas said nothing.
“Did he tell you he was sleeping with our marriage counselor?””
Still nothing.
“Did he tell you he used my sister?””
Reid’s face tightened.
“Elise.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t get to control the conversation anymore.””
Thomas finally spoke.
“You have no idea what your family was involved in.””
Elise frowned.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
Then Reid interrupted.
“Enough.””
But Elise had already heard it.
Family.
Not marriage.
Not love.
Family.
“What did my parents do?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence told her more than words.
That night, Elise met Daniel.
She placed the photos on his desk.
He studied them carefully.
“Thomas Voss.””
“You know him?””
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Daniel sighed.
“He managed your parents’ estate.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You know what he showed you.””
A chill went through her.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel opened a file.
“Your parents’ accounts had irregularities.””
Elise stared.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
“Because they disappeared after your father died.””
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Millions.””
Elise sat back.
Her parents.
Her inheritance.
The money she thought was protected.
“What happened?””
“We thought it was a mistake.””
“And now?””
Daniel looked at the photos.
“Now I think someone spent years planning how to recover it.””
Elise felt sick.
“Recover?””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Daniel looked at her.
“From you.””
Before Elise could answer, her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
*You’re looking in the wrong direction.*
Another message arrived.
*Ask Daniel why he never told you the truth.*
Elise slowly raised her eyes.
Daniel’s face had changed.
He had seen the message.
And he looked afraid.
“Daniel?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why would someone say that?””
He swallowed.
“Because they know.””
“Know what?””
Daniel looked at the door.
Then back at Elise.
“Your parents didn’t lose their money.””
A pause.
“They were robbed.””
Elise whispered:
“By who?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Daniel went pale.
Because he recognized the sound.
May you like
And he whispered:
“They found us.””
