Chapter 4: The New Owner's First Decision

For several seconds, nobody in the Bellmont Grand lobby moved.

Peter Whitmore stood with the chairman's phone pressed against his ear, staring at Theodore Brooks as if he had just discovered that the ground beneath him was no longer solid.

Vanessa's fingers trembled.

Richard had stopped pretending to look confident.

And Danielle, still seated beside her father, was trying to calm her newborn daughter.

Theodore glanced at Peter.

“Are you finished with that call?””

Peter slowly lowered the phone.

“Mr. Brooks, I wasn't aware the acquisition had been finalized.””

“It was finalized yesterday afternoon.””

Peter swallowed.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

“But our legal department said the closing documents were still being processed.””

Theodore nodded toward Michael Grant, his attorney.

“Michael?””

Michael opened his briefcase.

“The final agreements were executed yesterday at 4:35 p.m. The ownership transfer became effective upon completion of the closing conditions. Your corporate counsel received the confirmation.””

Peter stared at the documents.

Then he looked toward Vanessa.

She was still holding her access card.

“Vanessa,” Peter said quietly.

She turned toward him.

“Yes?””

“Did you know who you were speaking to?””

Vanessa forced a nervous laugh.

“I had no idea Mr. Brooks was involved in the acquisition.””

Peter shook his head.

“That's not what I asked.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I didn't know he was the owner.””

Peter's voice rose.

“You didn't know? You didn't even bother finding out why his daughter was here?””

“She was causing a disturbance.””

Danielle looked up.

“I asked for directions.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“I wasn't speaking to you.””

Theodore's expression hardened.

“You are still speaking to my daughter. Watch your tone.””

Vanessa immediately looked away.

Peter rubbed his forehead.

“This is a disaster.””

Theodore calmly adjusted his jacket.

“No, Peter. The disaster happened when your manager decided that a woman holding a newborn could be treated like an inconvenience.””

Peter nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

“Do you?””

“Yes, sir.””

“Then let's begin with the truth.””

Theodore turned toward Michael.

“Bring up the footage.””

Michael nodded to Daniel.

Daniel had already spoken with the hotel's security supervisor, who was now approaching with a tablet.

“Mr. Brooks, we've secured the original lobby recordings,” Daniel said.

“The footage has been copied to an independent drive. The original files remain untouched.””

“Good.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Wait. You cannot access employee security footage without authorization.””

Michael looked at her.

“The hotel has confirmed that Mr. Brooks now holds controlling ownership. In addition, we have requested preservation of evidence relating to a reported assault.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is intimidation.””

Theodore looked at her.

“Would you like us to stop?””

She hesitated.

He continued.

“Because we can let the police investigate without interference. They can request the footage themselves.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Peter gestured toward the security supervisor.

“Show us the recording.””

The supervisor looked uncomfortable.

“Sir, should we move to the management office?””

“No,” Theodore answered.

“Play it here.””

The supervisor connected the tablet to the large digital display behind the reception desk.

A moment later, the lobby appeared on the screen.

The recording showed Danielle entering the hotel.

It showed her greeting the receptionist.

It showed her asking for directions.

Then came the moment when her diaper bag caught the table.

The vase wobbled.

Danielle caught it.

She apologized.

The video continued.

Vanessa approached.

The audio was clear.

“Do you understand how expensive the furniture in this hotel is?””

Danielle responded politely.

“I didn't damage anything.””

Then the recording captured Vanessa moving closer.

The manager's voice echoed through the lobby speakers.

“People like you don't belong here.””

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.

Then the slap.

The sound was unmistakable.

Danielle fell, twisting her body to protect her newborn.

Amara began crying.

The recording continued.

Vanessa stood over her.

“You should've watched where you were going.””

Richard pointed toward the exit.

“You need to leave now.””

Then Vanessa said the words again.

“Get them out.””

The screen went dark.

Nobody spoke.

Peter looked physically sick.

He turned toward Vanessa.

“Tell me that isn't what happened.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“Peter, the recording doesn't show everything that happened before—”

“It shows you striking her!””

“She was disrespectful!””

Peter slammed his palm against the reception counter.

“She's holding a three-day-old baby!””

Vanessa flinched.

Theodore remained silent.

He wanted Peter to hear himself.

He wanted every employee in that lobby to understand that the problem wasn't a misunderstanding.

It was a choice.

A choice made by someone who believed that a person's appearance determined whether they deserved respect.

Michael closed his briefcase.

“Mr. Whitmore, I recommend that you preserve all records connected to this incident, including internal messages and staff communications.””

Peter nodded.

“Absolutely.””

“And the employment decisions involving the employee who assisted Ms. Brooks.””

Tasha looked up.

Vanessa turned toward her.

“She was insubordinate.””

Theodore glanced at Tasha.

“Did you help my daughter?””

Tasha nodded.

“I brought her water.””

“Why?””

“Because she was hurt, sir.””

“Did you know who she was?””

“No.””

“Did that matter?””

Tasha shook her head.

“No, sir.””

Theodore nodded.

“That's the kind of employee a hotel should be proud to have.””

Peter immediately turned toward the front desk.

“Tasha, your suspension is revoked pending a formal review. You're being paid for the time you were removed from your shift.””

Tasha's eyes widened.

“Thank you, sir.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“You cannot make that decision without consulting me.””

Peter stared at her.

“That's precisely what I can do.””

He turned toward Michael.

“Please document that instruction.””

Michael wrote it down.

Then Peter faced Vanessa again.

“Hand over your access card.””

She held it tighter.

“Peter, I've worked here for eleven years.””

“And today you assaulted a guest.””

“I made one mistake!””

Danielle finally spoke.

“One mistake?””

Vanessa looked at her.

Danielle's voice was trembling, but she continued.

“You slapped me while I was holding my daughter. You told me people like me didn't belong here. Your assistant threatened me. You made everyone laugh while I was trying to protect my baby.””

She looked down at Amara.

“Do you know what I kept thinking when I was on that floor?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“I kept thinking that if I moved the wrong way, my baby might hit her head.””

The lobby was completely silent.

Danielle looked back up.

“And you were standing there telling me to leave.””

Vanessa's eyes shifted toward the guests.

Nobody was laughing now.

The same people who had mocked Danielle were suddenly fascinated by the floor.

Theodore placed one hand on his daughter's shoulder.

“You don't owe her another explanation.””

Danielle nodded.

Peter extended his hand.

“Vanessa. The access card.””

For a moment, she looked as if she might refuse.

Then she removed it from her handbag.

She placed it in Peter's palm.

He turned toward Richard.

“Yours too.””

Richard blinked.

“Mine?””

“You heard me.””

He reluctantly handed over his card.

Peter looked at both of them.

“Effective immediately, you're removed from management duties pending an independent investigation. You are not authorized to access hotel systems, employee records, or guest information until the review is complete.””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“You cannot do this to me!””

Peter's response was cold.

“I just did.””

Fifteen minutes later, a uniformed police officer entered the lobby with another officer.

Harold had called them.

Danielle was now seated in a comfortable chair near the concierge desk. A hotel medic had examined her and recommended a hospital evaluation because of the fall and the possibility of an injury.

Theodore insisted she be taken to a hospital.

“I'm fine, Dad.””

“I know you want to be fine. We're still getting you checked.””

Amara had finally fallen asleep.

Michael approached with a document.

“Danielle, the officers would like your statement. You can provide it privately.””

“Okay.””

Theodore looked at his attorney.

“Make sure nobody pressures her.””

“Of course.””

One officer approached Vanessa.

“Ma'am, we'd like to speak with you about the reported physical assault.””

Vanessa immediately looked at Peter.

“Peter, say something.””

Peter didn't move.

“I'm not going to interfere with a police investigation.””

The officer asked Vanessa to accompany him to a quieter area.

She glanced toward the guests.

Her voice dropped.

“This is humiliating.””

Theodore heard her.

He turned.

“Now you understand how my daughter felt.””

Vanessa looked at him.

For once, she had no answer.

As the officers walked her away, Richard remained near the reception desk.

He looked at Theodore.

“Mr. Brooks, I'd like to apologize.””

Theodore studied him.

“Why?””

Richard frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Are you apologizing because you understand what you did? Or because you now know who I am?””

Richard opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Theodore nodded.

“That's what I thought.””

He turned toward his daughter.

“Let's get you and the baby checked.””

But as Danielle stood, Tasha approached with her hands clasped.

“Ms. Brooks?””

Danielle turned.

“Yes?””

Tasha looked nervous.

“I just wanted to say I'm sorry. I should have done more.””

Danielle shook her head.

“You helped me when nobody else did.””

“I was scared of losing my job.””

“I understand.””

Tasha looked down.

“My mother raised me to help people. I didn't want to ignore you.””

Danielle reached out and gently squeezed her hand.

“You didn't.””

Tasha's eyes filled with tears.

Then Peter approached.

“Mr. Brooks, before you leave, there's something you should know.””

Theodore stopped.

“What?””

Peter glanced toward the management office.

“We received a complaint about Vanessa's behavior several months ago. It involved another family.””

Theodore's expression changed.

“What kind of complaint?””

Peter hesitated.

“A Black family. A mother and two children. They said Vanessa refused to honor their reservation and made comments about their appearance.””

Danielle slowly turned toward him.

“Did you investigate?””

Peter looked ashamed.

“We did.””

“And?””

“The complaint was closed.””

“Why?””

Peter lowered his eyes.

“Vanessa said the family had become aggressive.””

Theodore stared at him.

“Was there video?””

Peter nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

“In the corporate archive.””

Theodore looked at Michael.

“Get it.””

Michael nodded.

Peter took a breath.

“Mr. Brooks, I think there may be more complaints.””

Theodore glanced back at the hotel.

“Then we're going to find out how many.””

And for the first time since entering the Bellmont Grand, Peter Whitmore realized that the acquisition wasn't going to be the only thing changing that day.

The entire hotel was about to be investigated.

But what he didn't know was that the next piece of evidence would reveal something far more disturbing than Vanessa's behavior.

May you like

It would involve the hotel's own security department.

And someone inside the building had already started deleting records.
