Chapter 5: The Evidence They Tried to Erase
Theodore Brooks had barely reached the hospital when his chief of security called.
“Sir, we have a problem.””
Theodore looked through the SUV window.
Danielle was sitting beside him, holding Amara against her chest.
“What happened?””
“Someone attempted to access the lobby security system after we secured the original footage.””
Theodore's expression tightened.
“Who?””
“We're checking.””
“Was anything deleted?””
“An administrator account attempted to remove several files. Our preservation copy is safe, but the hotel system is showing missing recordings from other dates.””
Theodore looked at Michael.
“Did you hear that?””
Michael nodded.
“Tell them not to touch anything else.””
Theodore returned to the call.
“Daniel, preserve the access logs. I want the names of everyone who entered that system.””
“Yes, sir.””
“And nobody confronts the employee until we know exactly what happened.””
“Understood.””
The call ended.
Danielle looked at him.
“Dad, what is it?””
“Someone tried to delete security footage.””
Her face tightened.
“From today?””
“Not just today. Apparently, other recordings are missing.””
Danielle looked down at Amara.
“Do you think Vanessa has done this before?””
Theodore didn't answer immediately.
“I think we need to find out.””
At the hospital, a nurse examined Danielle's cheek and asked her several questions about the fall.
Theodore waited outside the examination room with Michael.
He paced once.
Then again.
Michael watched him.
“You're angry.””
Theodore stopped.
“Wouldn't you be?””
“Of course.””
“My daughter was slapped in front of a room full of people while holding my granddaughter.””
Michael nodded.
“I understand.””
Theodore looked through the glass panel.
Danielle was gently rocking Amara while the nurse checked her blood pressure.
His voice softened.
“When she was little, she used to run to me whenever she got frightened. She'd grab my hand and tell me to make the bad thing go away.””
Michael smiled faintly.
“She still trusts you to do that.””
“I know.””
Theodore looked down.
“But I don't want her growing up believing that she needs her father standing behind her to deserve respect.””
Michael remained quiet.
“That woman treated her like she was nothing. I want the hotel to understand that it would have been just as wrong if Danielle had been a cleaner, a delivery driver, or someone who couldn't afford a room.””
“Then we'll make sure the investigation focuses on the conduct, not the family's position.””
Theodore nodded.
“Exactly.””
The examination took another twenty minutes.
The doctor found no immediate serious injury, but recommended monitoring Danielle's symptoms and obtaining further evaluation if she developed headaches, dizziness, or changes in vision.
Amara appeared physically well.
Danielle finally relaxed.
“Can we go home now?””
Theodore smiled.
“Almost.””
He handed her a fresh bottle of water.
“Your mother would have been furious if she heard you skipped lunch.””
Danielle laughed weakly.
“Mom would have driven straight to the hotel herself.””
“Your mother would have walked into that lobby and demanded to see the manager.””
“She still does that.””
Theodore smiled.
For a few seconds, the day felt normal.
Then Michael's phone rang.
He stepped aside.
“Yes?””
A voice spoke quickly.
Michael's expression changed.
“Are you certain?””
He listened.
“Send it to me.””
He ended the call and approached Theodore.
“We have a preliminary finding.””
“What?””
“The missing footage wasn't random. The system shows that recordings connected to previous complaints were accessed from the manager's office.””
Theodore looked at him.
“By Vanessa?””
“We don't know yet. The account belonged to the hotel's operations department.””
“Who had access?””
“Vanessa, Richard, and the head of security.””
Theodore's eyes narrowed.
“What's the head of security's name?””
“Leonard Price.””
Michael opened his tablet.
“He's worked at the Bellmont for eight years.””
Theodore nodded.
“Find him.””
At the Bellmont Grand, Leonard Price was sitting alone in the security control room.
He had been watching the events unfold through the lobby monitors.
He knew the footage of Vanessa striking Danielle had been preserved.
He also knew that the hotel had been acquired.
What he didn't know was how much Theodore Brooks had already discovered.
His phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
*UNKNOWN NUMBER: You need to remove the remaining files. They're looking into the old complaints.*
Leonard stared at it.
He typed:
*LEONARD: I can't. They're watching the system.*
The reply came immediately.
*UNKNOWN NUMBER: Then find another way.*
Leonard looked toward the door.
Nobody was there.
He opened the internal archive.
A folder labeled INCIDENT REPORTS appeared on the screen.
Inside were dozens of files.
Some dated six months earlier.
Some dated two years earlier.
He opened one.
A photograph showed a young Black woman standing at the reception desk with a little boy.
The report described her as verbally aggressive.
But the attached footage showed something completely different.
The woman was calmly asking why her reservation had been canceled.
Vanessa was standing behind the counter, laughing.
Leonard closed the file.
Another message arrived.
*UNKNOWN NUMBER: Are you doing it?*
He stared at the screen.
Then he heard footsteps.
“Leonard?””
He jumped.
Tasha stood in the doorway.
She was wearing her coat and carrying her handbag.
“Can I help you?”” he asked.
“I came back to collect my things.””
“Then collect them and leave.””
Tasha looked at the monitor.
“What's happening?””
“Nothing.””
“Why are you looking at old incident reports?””
Leonard stood up.
“That's none of your business.””
Tasha frowned.
“I thought Mr. Brooks ordered everything preserved.””
Leonard stepped toward her.
“You should be careful about what you think you know.””
Tasha backed away.
“I was just asking.””
“Then stop asking.””
He pointed toward the hallway.
“Go.””
Tasha left.
But she had already noticed the open archive folder.
And she remembered something.
Three months earlier, Vanessa had ordered Leonard to remove a complaint from a guest who claimed she had been racially insulted.
Tasha had been working the front desk that night.
She remembered the guest.
She remembered the little boy crying.
And she remembered Vanessa telling the woman:
“This isn't the kind of establishment where your family should be staying.””
Tasha had wanted to report it.
But Leonard had told her the complaint was already closed.
Now she wasn't sure she could stay silent.
At 3:40 p.m., Theodore returned to the hotel.
This time, he didn't bring the entire security team.
He brought Michael and Daniel.
Peter Whitmore was waiting in the lobby.
He looked exhausted.
“Mr. Brooks, we've secured the system.””
“Have you?””
“Yes. Our IT department disabled the administrator accounts and isolated the archive.””
“Who attempted to delete the files?””
Peter hesitated.
“Our security director says he was performing routine maintenance.””
Theodore looked at Michael.
Michael shook his head slightly.
“Routine maintenance doesn't usually target records associated with complaints,” he said.
Peter nodded.
“I understand.””
Theodore glanced toward the reception desk.
“Where is Leonard Price?””
“His office.””
“Bring him here.””
Peter called a supervisor.
A few minutes later, Leonard entered the lobby.
He was a broad-shouldered man in his fifties, wearing a black security uniform.
He approached Peter.
“You wanted to see me?””
Peter gestured toward Theodore.
“This is Mr. Brooks. He's overseeing the review.””
Leonard nodded.
“Sir.””
Theodore studied him.
“Were you responsible for the attempted deletion of security footage?””
Leonard shook his head.
“No, sir.””
“Were you logged into the system?””
“I was performing maintenance.””
“What kind?””
“Routine archive management.””
Michael opened his tablet.
“That's interesting. The system records show that the deletion command was issued under your credentials.””
Leonard looked at the tablet.
“Those credentials are shared.””
“Shared with whom?””
Leonard hesitated.
“Management.””
“Which members of management?””
“Ms. Whitmore. Mr.
Cole. Myself.””
Theodore nodded.
“Did Vanessa Whitmore ask you to delete footage?””
Leonard looked toward Peter.
“I don't remember.””
Theodore leaned slightly forward.
“You don't remember?””
“No, sir.””
“Then perhaps the messages on your phone will help you remember.””
Leonard stiffened.
“What messages?””
Michael spoke calmly.
“We have not accessed your personal device. However, the hotel system contains a record of communications sent through its internal messaging platform.””
Leonard's face changed.
Michael opened a document.
“Yesterday, at 9:14 p.m., an account associated with the general manager requested that three complaint recordings be removed from the archive.””
Peter looked up sharply.
“Yesterday?””
Michael continued.
“At 9:21 p.m., the security director responded that the files would be handled.””
Leonard said nothing.
Peter looked furious.
“Why wasn't I informed?””
Leonard finally answered.
“I was following instructions.””
Theodore looked at him.
“Whose instructions?””
Leonard's jaw tightened.
Before he could respond, a voice came from behind them.
“Mine.””
Everyone turned.
Richard Cole was standing near the elevators.
He had returned to the hotel wearing a different suit.
Peter frowned.
“Richard? I told you not to access management areas.””
Richard ignored him.
He looked at Theodore.
“I think you deserve to know the truth.””
Leonard's face went pale.
“Richard, don't.””
Richard walked toward the group.
“Vanessa didn't act alone.””
Peter stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard swallowed.
“The complaints were real. We received them. But Vanessa wanted them removed because she was trying to protect the hotel's reputation.””
Michael folded his arms.
“And you helped her?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Theodore's expression remained cold.
“Why?””
Richard looked toward the floor.
“Because she promised me the general manager position when she retired.””
Peter's mouth fell open.
“You destroyed guest records for a promotion?””
Richard shook his head.
“I didn't think it would go this far.””
Theodore looked at him.
“It went this far when you stood beside a woman who was on the floor holding her newborn and told her to leave.””
Richard looked away.
Then he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
“I copied some of the records before Leonard could remove them.””
Leonard stepped forward.
“You said you deleted those.””
Richard ignored him.
He handed the drive to Michael.
“There are recordings from the last two years. Not just Vanessa. Other managers were involved.””
Peter looked stunned.
“How many complaints?””
Richard hesitated.
“Twenty-three.””
Silence.
Twenty-three.
Danielle's incident was no longer an isolated event.
Michael looked at the drive.
“We'll preserve this and have it independently examined.””
Theodore looked at Richard.
“Why are you telling us now?””
Richard's eyes filled.
“Because I don't want to lose my career over Vanessa.””
Theodore shook his head.
“You still don't understand.””
Richard frowned.
“You're only confessing because you think honesty will save you.””
Richard said nothing.
Theodore turned toward Peter.
“Everyone involved in the destruction or alteration of these records needs to be placed on administrative leave while an independent investigation takes place. Preserve all evidence. No retaliation against employees or guests who cooperate.””
Peter nodded.
“Agreed.””
Michael placed the flash drive into an evidence envelope.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Michael Grant.””
A voice spoke on the other end.
His expression changed.
“Where?””
He listened.
“Send me the report immediately.””
He ended the call.
Theodore looked at him.
“What now?””
Michael took a breath.
“The previous complaints include a report from a former employee.””
“What did she report?””
Michael looked toward Peter.
“She claimed Vanessa ordered staff to deny service to certain guests based on their race and appearance.””
Peter closed his eyes.
“Good Lord.””
Michael continued.
“But that's not the most serious part.””
Theodore waited.
“The former employee says she was threatened after submitting her complaint. She has now agreed to speak with us.””
“Who is she?””
Michael looked at his tablet.
“Her name is Olivia Carter.””
He paused.
“And she says she has the original recording of a private meeting where Vanessa explained exactly why she wanted those complaints hidden.””
Theodore looked toward the security office.
“Can she provide it?””
Michael nodded.
“She says she can.””
Then he added something that made Peter's expression collapse.
“Apparently, the recording also includes someone from corporate leadership.””
Peter slowly looked up.
“Who?””
Michael turned the tablet around.
A name appeared on the screen.
Peter stared at it.
Then he whispered:
“That can't be right.””
Because the person Olivia Carter had recorded wasn't Vanessa Whitmore.
It was Peter's own brother.
The man who had helped build the hotel group.
May you like
The man who still sat on its board.
And the man who had personally approved every one of Vanessa's promotions.
