Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Six Hotels
Theodore remained seated.
David Whitmore stood at the head of the conference table, looking almost pleased with himself.
For the first time that evening, he believed he had regained control.
Peter looked between the two men.
“David, what exactly are you saying?””
David placed his hands on the table.
“I'm saying the acquisition agreement contains a serious flaw.””
Michael continued reading.
“Which property are you referring to?””
“The Whitmore Medical Plaza.””
Theodore frowned.
“That's the hospital?””
David nodded.
“Not just the hospital. The land, the medical office building, and the private maternity wing are held by a separate property company.””
Michael turned another page.
Theodore watched his attorney carefully.
“Who owns it?””
David smiled.
“An independent holding company.””
“Whose?””
David didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward Peter.
“Tell him.””
Peter shook his head.
“I didn't know.””
David laughed.
“Of course you didn't.””
Michael finally found the relevant clause.
He read it twice.
Then he looked up.
“The hospital property was transferred to a separate entity three years ago.””
Theodore nodded.
“Who controls that entity?””
Michael checked the document.
“According to this agreement, David Whitmore holds a controlling interest through a private trust.””
Peter stood.
“What?””
David shrugged.
“You should have read the restructuring documents.””
Peter looked furious.
“You told me the hospital was included in the company.””
“It was included in the operational portfolio.””
“That isn't the same thing!””
David smiled.
“Exactly.””
Theodore leaned forward.
“Why are you telling me this?””
David looked at him.
“Because you need to understand something. You may own the hotels, but I still control certain properties connected to the business.””
“And you think that gives you leverage?””
“It gives me options.””
Theodore stared at him.
“Your options disappeared when you started using private information about my daughter.””
David's smile faded.
“You're making this personal.””
“It became personal when someone entered my daughter's hospital room pretending to protect her.””
David looked toward Peter.
Peter turned away.
Michael closed the folder.
“Mr. Whitmore, we'll need the original transfer documents and all associated trust records.””
David shook his head.
“You'll get nothing.””
Theodore stood.
“Then we'll obtain them through the appropriate legal process.””
David gave a short laugh.
“Good luck.””
He gathered his documents.
But before he could leave, the conference room door opened.
A woman entered with two investigators.
It was Olivia Carter.
She carried another folder.
David stopped.
“What is she doing here?””
Olivia looked directly at him.
“I'm here because you forgot something.””
David's expression tightened.
“What?””
Olivia placed the folder on the table.
“You forgot that I worked in your corporate office before I became guest relations supervisor.””
Peter frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Olivia opened the folder.
“These are copies of the original property transfer documents.””
Michael immediately reached for them.
Olivia continued.
“David had me organize the files during the restructuring. I noticed that the hospital property was transferred to a company that didn't appear in the annual reports.””
David stepped forward.
“You had no authority to retain those documents.””
Olivia looked at him.
“And you had no authority to hide them.””
Michael examined the first page.
Then the second.
His expression changed.
“Mr. Brooks…”
“What?””
“This is not simply a separate holding company.””
Theodore waited.
Michael turned the page.
“The transfer was financed through a loan secured against the property.””
David's face became tense.
Michael continued.
“And the lender has enforcement rights if certain conditions are triggered.””
Peter looked at his brother.
“What conditions?””
Olivia answered.
“Fraudulent financial reporting. Misrepresentation of ownership. And certain criminal findings involving the use of company assets.””
David's smile disappeared.
Theodore looked at Michael.
“Can those conditions be triggered?””
Michael nodded slowly.
“If the evidence is authenticated and the lender proceeds according to the agreement.””
David slammed his hand against the table.
“This is ridiculous!””
Olivia didn't flinch.
“You told me those documents would never matter.””
David turned toward her.
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
Olivia's voice remained steady.
“I know exactly what I'm doing.””
She looked at Peter.
“I reported the discrimination complaints. I reported the altered records. I reported the suspicious payments. Nobody listened.””
Then she looked toward Theodore.
“I kept copies because I knew someone would eventually need them.””
Theodore nodded.
“Thank you.””
David grabbed his briefcase.
“This meeting is over.””
One of the investigators stepped forward.
“Mr. Whitmore, we'd like to speak with you.””
David stared.
“Am I being detained?””
“We'd like to ask questions regarding the records and payments. You're free to cooperate voluntarily at this time.””
David looked toward his attorney.
The attorney had been silent for several minutes.
Finally, he spoke.
“David, I recommend that you answer their questions.””
David looked betrayed.
“You're my attorney!””
“And I'm advising you not to make this worse.””
David slowly sat down.
For the first time, the man who had controlled the company for decades appeared uncertain.
Outside the conference room, Peter approached Theodore.
“Mr. Brooks, may I speak with you?””
Theodore stopped.
“What is it?””
Peter looked exhausted.
“I owe your daughter an apology.””
Theodore didn't respond.
Peter continued.
“I approved Vanessa's appointments. I approved the management structure. I trusted my brother. I ignored warning signs because the hotels were profitable.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I didn't know about the hospital incident, but I should have known about the complaints.””
Theodore studied him.
“Why didn't you investigate them properly?””
Peter swallowed.
“Because I was afraid of damaging the company's reputation.””
Theodore shook his head.
“You were protecting a reputation instead of the people who built it.””
Peter nodded.
“I know.””
“No, Peter. You know now. That's different.””
Peter looked toward the conference room.
“What happens to the company?””
“That depends on the investigation.””
“And me?””
Theodore took a breath.
“You're going to cooperate fully. You're going to provide every document, every communication, and every decision you made.””
Peter nodded.
“And after that?””
“After that, the board will decide whether you're capable of leading anything.””
Peter accepted the answer.
Then he asked quietly:
“Will you let Danielle know I apologized?””
Theodore looked at him.
“You can apologize to her yourself. But don't expect her to make you feel better about what happened.””
Peter nodded.
“I understand.””
At the Brooks residence, Danielle was watching Amara sleep when Marcus entered with his phone.
“Your father called.””
She looked up.
“Is everything okay?””
“He says the investigation has uncovered something serious.””
Danielle sat up.
“What?””
“Someone had access to the hospital records.””
Her face tightened.
“Was it the man who came into my room?””
“Apparently, he was working with people connected to the hotel.””
Danielle looked down at Amara.
“So it wasn't random.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
She picked up the baby.
For several seconds, she simply watched her daughter's tiny face.
Then she spoke.
“I don't understand why they needed to involve her.””
Marcus sat beside her.
“Some people become so obsessed with protecting their power that they stop seeing other people as human beings.””
Danielle looked at him.
“I don't want Amara growing up in a world where people think they can treat us that way.””
Marcus took her hand.
“Then we'll teach her something different.””
“What?””
“That she doesn't have to become cruel to be strong. And she doesn't have to become powerful to deserve respect.””
Danielle smiled faintly.
Then her phone rang.
It was Tasha.
“Hello?””
“Ms. Brooks? It's Tasha from the Bellmont.””
Danielle sat up.
“Hi, Tasha. Is everything okay?””
“I hope I'm not bothering you.””
“Not at all.””
Tasha took a breath.
“I wanted to tell you that the independent investigators spoke to me today.””
Danielle smiled.
“That's good.””
“I told them everything I saw. And I told them about the other complaints I witnessed.””
Danielle looked toward Marcus.
“What other complaints?””
Tasha hesitated.
“There were several. Sometimes guests would ask for help, and Vanessa would tell us not to serve them. Sometimes she would make comments about their clothes or their skin.””
Danielle closed her eyes.
“I see.””
Tasha continued.
“Some of us wanted to report it. But we were afraid of losing our jobs.””
“You shouldn't have had to choose between doing the right thing and keeping your paycheck.””
Tasha was quiet.
Then she said:
“Mr. Brooks has offered me a position on the new guest-care review team.””
Danielle smiled.
“That's wonderful.””
“I don't know if I'm ready.””
“Why not?””
“I'm just a receptionist.””
Danielle shook her head.
“You were the only person who treated me like a human being when I needed help.””
Tasha began crying.
“Thank you.””
“You deserve the opportunity.””
After the call ended, Danielle looked at Marcus.
“Maybe something good can come out of this.””
He nodded.
“Maybe.””
But before she could say anything else, her phone vibrated.
A message from her father.
*DAD: The investigation has uncovered another issue. I need to speak with you tomorrow.*
Danielle frowned.
She typed:
*DANIELLE: Is it about the hospital?*
His reply came quickly.
*DAD: Yes. And it's about someone you know.*
Her stomach tightened.
Someone she knew?
She looked at Marcus.
“What?””
“Dad says there's another issue.””
Marcus took her phone.
He read the message.
Then he looked at her.
“Who do you think it is?””
Danielle shook her head.
“I don't know.””
A moment later, another message arrived.
*DAD: Don't panic. But I need you to remember something about your first week after giving birth.*
Danielle stared at the screen.
Her mind began moving through memories.
The hospital room.
The unfamiliar man.
The nurses.
The flowers delivered to her room.
Then something clicked.
Three days before the hotel incident, Marcus had brought her a bouquet.
A large arrangement of white roses.
There had been a small card.
She remembered reading it.
It said:
*Congratulations, Danielle. Welcome to the family.*
She had assumed it was from her father's office.
But now she wasn't sure.
She looked at Marcus.
“Who sent the flowers?””
Marcus frowned.
“I thought your father did.””
Danielle shook her head.
“No. He sent the basket of baby supplies. The flowers were separate.””
Marcus stood.
“Do you still have the card?””
Danielle nodded.
“It should be in the nursery drawer.””
He walked toward the room.
A few seconds later, he returned holding a small white envelope.
Danielle opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
She read the message again.
Then she noticed the signature at the bottom.
*D. Whitmore.*
Her face went pale.
“David Whitmore.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why would he send you flowers?””
Danielle shook her head.
“I don't know.””
She turned the card over.
There was something written on the back.
A short sentence.
*A family deserves to feel safe.*
Marcus stared at it.
Then he looked toward the door.
“I'm calling your father.””
The following morning, Theodore arrived at the house.
He examined the card.
Then he looked at the photograph of the flowers Danielle had taken after delivery.
The bouquet was expensive.
The card was handwritten.
And the hospital's visitor log showed that someone had delivered it under David Whitmore's name.
Theodore looked at Michael.
“Did David visit the hospital?””
Michael shook his head.
“No. But the delivery company records show that the order was placed through a private account.””
“Can we identify the account?””
Michael nodded.
“It's registered to Carter Strategic Consulting.””
Theodore slowly put the card down.
Danielle looked at him.
“Dad, why would he send me flowers?””
Theodore didn't answer immediately.
He had been trying to understand David's motive.
Now he was beginning to see a pattern.
David had known Danielle was pregnant.
He knew where she would give birth.
He knew the hotel she planned to visit.
And someone had been watching her family.
The flowers weren't a kind gesture.
They were proof that David knew exactly where she was.
Theodore looked at Daniel.
“Find the delivery driver.””
Daniel nodded.
“Already working on it.””
Then Michael's phone rang.
He listened.
His expression changed.
“Sir, the police have found Ethan Grant.””
Theodore turned.
“Where?””
“At the airport.””
“Has he been arrested?””
Michael hesitated.
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because he requested to speak with you.””
Theodore stared at him.
“What does he want?””
Michael listened to the officer on the other end.
Then he looked up.
“He says he has evidence against David Whitmore.””
Theodore nodded.
“Then let's hear it.””
But Michael wasn't finished.
“He also says he knows who inside Brooks Global gave him Danielle's hospital information.””
Theodore looked at Daniel.
For the first time, his own security director seemed unsettled.
Because the name Ethan Grant had just provided wasn't a former employee.
It was someone who still worked at Brooks Global.
Someone who had been sitting in Theodore's executive meetings.
May you like
Someone Theodore trusted.
And someone who had known about Danielle's pregnancy from the very beginning.
